CHAPTER 2 — THE TOAST THAT BECAME EVIDENCE

CHAPTER 2 — THE TOAST THAT BECAME EVIDENCE

The room fell silent.

My husband, Ethan, looked around with a smug grin, still holding his crystal glass high.

"What?" he laughed.

"It was one slap."

"She'll survive."

A few uneasy chuckles died almost immediately.

My father slowly stood from his chair.

For thirty years, he had prosecuted domestic violence cases.

He had seen bruises hidden beneath makeup.

He had listened to excuses dressed up as jokes.

He removed his wristwatch and placed it carefully on the table.

The soft click echoed through the ballroom.

"Ethan," he said quietly.

"Would you mind repeating what you just admitted?"

Ethan shrugged.

"I said I slapped her."

"It was my birthday gift before the real one."

He laughed again.

No one joined him.

My father nodded once.

"Thank you."

He turned toward the guests.

"You've all heard his statement."

Several people who had been smiling moments earlier reached into their jackets.

One produced a badge.

Another quietly identified herself as a detective.

A third stepped toward the ballroom doors and locked them.

Ethan's smile disappeared.

"What is this?"

One detective answered calmly.

"A lawful investigation."

Ethan looked at me.

"You planned this?"

I met his eyes.

"No."

"You planned it yourself the moment you decided violence was something to celebrate."

The detective removed a small digital recorder from his pocket.

"Your admission has been recorded."

The tequila glass slipped from Ethan's hand.

It shattered across the marble floor.

For the first time that evening...

He understood the party had never been about him.
