CHAPTER 2 — THE TRUTH NO ONE SAW

The courtroom became so quiet that the rustle of Claire's coat sounded impossibly loud.

She unbuttoned it slowly.

Then let it fall open.

A collective gasp swept through the gallery.

Beneath the coat, Claire wore a simple blouse with sleeves rolled to her elbows.

Faint scars crossed her forearms.

Older injuries had faded into pale lines.

Newer bruises, photographed and documented weeks earlier by her physicians, remained visible.

Judge Whitmore looked over her glasses.

"Mrs. Bennett..."

Claire spoke before the judge could finish.

"I hid them for years."

She turned toward Ethan.

"Because every time someone asked how I got hurt..."

"I lied."

Ethan stood abruptly.

"Your Honor, this is nothing more than an attempt to prejudice the court."

Margaret Lawson calmly rose.

"We're only getting started."

She placed a sealed evidence binder on the clerk's desk.

Inside were emergency room records, photographs taken by medical professionals, contemporaneous journal entries, and messages Claire had preserved over many years.

Each document had a date.

Each date matched an injury.
