CHAPTER 13

CHAPTER 13

The Man Who Begged For Forgiveness

There was a time when Julian Cross believed apologies were for weak people.

He believed powerful people fixed problems.

They negotiated.

They paid.

They controlled the situation.

They never begged.

But life had a way of teaching lessons no amount of money could avoid.

And Julian Cross was about to learn the hardest lesson of all.

Some people could forgive you.

But they could never forget what you made them become.

The Man Outside The Gate

The Hart estate had changed.

For years, Julian walked through those gates as Elena's husband.

People welcomed him.

They respected him.

They called him family.

Now...

he stood outside like a stranger.

The security guard looked at him.

"Mr. Cross."

Julian nodded.

"I need to see Elena."

The guard hesitated.

"I'll inform her."

Minutes passed.

Julian stood beneath the cold evening sky.

No assistant.

No driver.

No executives waiting.

Just him.

A man who once believed the world belonged to him.

Finally, Elena appeared.

She wore a simple white coat.

No expensive jewelry.

No symbol of wealth.

Just Elena.

The woman he lost.

"Why are you here?"

Her voice was calm.

Not cruel.

Not angry.

That somehow hurt more.

Julian looked at her.

"I came to apologize."

Silence.

Elena looked away.

"Is that all?"

He swallowed.

"No."

A pause.

"I came because I finally understand."

The Apology He Never Gave

For years, Julian had imagined this moment.

He thought he would explain.

He thought Elena would understand.

He thought he could tell her about pressure.

Fear.

Ambition.

And somehow make everything better.

But standing in front of her...

he realized explanations were useless.

Because explanations were often just excuses wearing better clothes.

"I hurt you."

The words came slowly.

"I betrayed you."

Elena remained silent.

"I lied to you from the beginning."

A painful pause.

"I knew who you were."

"I knew what your family was."

"And I convinced myself that my love was enough to make my choices acceptable."

His voice broke.

"But it wasn't."

For the first time, Elena saw something different.

Not the arrogant businessman.

Not the man who believed he owned everything.

Just someone who finally understood the damage he caused.

The Question Elena Asked

"Do you know what hurt the most?"

Julian looked at her.

"Tell me."

"You didn't betray my company."

"You didn't betray my wealth."

"You betrayed the woman who trusted you when nobody else did."

Julian lowered his head.

"I know."

"No."

Elena said quietly.

"I don't think you do."

She stepped closer.

"When I married you, I wasn't afraid of losing money."

"I had more money than I could ever spend."

"I wasn't afraid of losing power."

"I was afraid of losing the one person who saw me as Elena."

Her voice became softer.

"And you became the person who made me afraid."

Those words hurt more than any accusation.

Because they were true.

The Man Who Finally Admitted Everything

Julian took a deep breath.

"There is something else you deserve to know."

Elena watched him carefully.

"What?"

"Before we married..."

He paused.

"I almost didn't propose."

Her expression changed.

"Why?"

"Because I knew your identity."

A silence.

"I thought about leaving."

Elena looked at him.

"Because you were afraid of my family?"

Julian shook his head.

"Because I was afraid of myself."

That surprised her.

"I knew if I stayed, I would always wonder."

"Wonder what?"

"If I loved you..."

His voice became quiet.

"Or if I loved the life that came with you."

The honesty was painful.

But it was the first honest thing he had given her in years.

"And what was the answer?"

Elena asked.

Julian looked at her.

"You."

A tear fell.

"But I realized it too late."

The Woman Who Could Not Forget

Elena looked toward the garden.

The place where they once walked together.

Where he promised forever.

"I believe you regret it."

Julian looked hopeful.

"But regret does not erase pain."

His expression fell.

"I know."

"I believe you are sorry."

Another pause.

"But forgiveness is not something you can demand because you finally feel guilty."

Julian nodded.

"I don't want to demand anything."

For the first time, Elena saw no manipulation.

No strategy.

No hidden purpose.

Just regret.

The Last Chance

"I don't expect you to take me back."

Julian said.

Elena looked at him.

"I know I don't deserve that."

"Then why are you here?"

He answered immediately.

"Because you deserved an apology years ago."

That answer stayed with her.

Because it was not about him.

For once.

It was about her.

The Unexpected Visitor

Before Elena could respond, a car arrived.

Nathaniel Hart stepped out.

His expression was serious.

"Elena."

She turned.

"What happened?"

Nathaniel looked at Julian.

Then back at her.

"We found something."

Julian frowned.

"Something about what?"

Nathaniel hesitated.

"The person who tried to destroy the Hart Trust."

The atmosphere changed.

Elena immediately became alert.

"Who?"

Nathaniel handed her a document.

Her face changed as she read it.

Because the name inside was impossible.

Someone she trusted.

Someone close to the family.

Someone who had been protecting the Hart empire for years.

Julian looked at her.

"What is it?"

Elena slowly lowered the paper.

"It's not about my past."

A pause.

"It's about my future."

The man who betrayed her had finally begged for forgiveness.

But forgiveness would have to wait.

Because a new enemy had appeared.

And this time...

May you like

the enemy shared her blood.
