Chapter 3 – Coming Home Without a House

Chapter 3 – Coming Home Without a House
Brent flew back to Colorado the next morning.
He drove directly to Redwood Crest Drive.
Moving trucks lined the driveway.
Professional packers carefully removed furniture.
A real estate representative greeted him at the front gate.
"Can I help you?"
"I live here."
The representative checked a tablet.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"The owner has completed the sale."
"You no longer have authorization to enter the property."
Brent stared in disbelief.
"My wife sold my house."
The representative answered politely.
"Our records indicate the property belonged solely to Mrs. Tessa Morgan before your marriage."
"It was her decision to sell."
Just then, Brent noticed workers removing a decorative sign from the front garden.
He remembered laughing when he and his mother had insisted on replacing Tessa's original nameplate with one that read:
The Brent Family Estate.
Now it was gone.
His phone rang.
It was Jennifer.
"Mr. Collins, all of your personal belongings have been inventoried."
"You'll receive instructions for collection."
Brent's voice shook.
"You can't do this."
Jennifer remained professional.
"My client exercised her legal rights regarding property she owned before the marriage."
"If you have questions, please direct them through counsel."
The call ended.
For the first time in years...

...and owning one.
