Chapter 10 — The Secret My Father Hid From Me

Chapter 10 — The Secret My Father Hid From Me

My father closed the vault door behind us.

Then he locked it.

Not with a key.

Not with a code.

With his hand.

I stared at him.

"What are you doing?"

He didn't answer.

"Where is Olivia?"

"Safe."

"Where is Julian?"

"With Adrian."

"And my mother?"

His face changed.

That was when I knew.

He had been lying to me again.

"You know where she is."

He looked away.

"Dad."

"Elena—"

"You know."

His silence was an answer.

I stepped closer.

"You knew my mother was alive."

"I suspected."

"That's not what Thomas said."

My father's jaw tightened.

"Thomas doesn't know everything."

"Then tell me."

He sat down.

For the first time in my life, my father looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

"I was the one who helped your mother disappear."

I stopped.

"What?"

"Fifteen years ago."

"Why?"

"Because Olivia was going to kill her."

My heart tightened.

"Why?"

"Because your mother found out about the board."

"What about it?"

My father looked at me.

"The board wasn't created to govern the company."

"Then why?"

"To control the family."

I didn't understand.

"Who controlled it?"

He whispered:

"Olivia."

I sat across from him.

The room felt too small.

"Tell me everything."

He shook his head.

"You don't want to know."

"That's not your decision."

"I made too many decisions for you."

"Exactly."

His eyes filled with something like regret.

"I thought I was protecting you."

"Everyone says that."

"I know."

"Then stop."

He looked down.

"I'll tell you."

He took a breath.

"Your grandfather didn't create the Orchid Trust because he trusted you."

I stared.

"He created it because he knew you would eventually become a target."

"Why me?"

"Because you were the only heir he could control without controlling."

I frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It will."

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a photograph.

I took it.

It showed me.

Five years old.

Standing beside my grandfather.

Behind us stood my mother.

And a woman I recognized immediately.

Olivia.

I stared.

"She knew me."

"Yes."

"Before Julian."

"Yes."

"Before I knew about the empire."

"Yes."

"Why?"

My father swallowed.

"Because Olivia chose you."

"For what?"

He didn't answer.

"Dad."

"To marry her son."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

"Olivia selected you when you were seventeen."

I stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"She believed you were the only person who could unlock the Sterling inheritance."

"But the trust was created before that."

"Yes."

"Then why would she need me?"

"Because your grandfather changed the conditions."

"When?"

"The night before he died."

I couldn't breathe.

"What changed?"

My father looked directly at me.

"Everything."

He opened another file.

Inside was a document dated thirty-one years earlier.

The title read:

STERLING SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.

I read the first page.

My name wasn't there.

Alexander's was.

Then another name.

Julian's.

Then a fourth.

LILY VALE.

I frowned.

"Lily wasn't born."

"Correct."

"Then why is she here?"

"Because your grandfather had the agreement amended before her birth."

"Why?"

"Because he knew something about your bloodline."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

My father hesitated.

"You weren't born a Vale."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"You were born a Sterling."

The words didn't make sense.

I laughed.

"No."

"It's true."

"My mother was a Vale."

"She married into the Vale family."

"Then who was my biological father?"

He looked at me.

"Jonathan Sterling."

The room disappeared.

I couldn't breathe.

"My grandfather?"

"No."

I stared.

"Jonathan Sterling was your biological father."

I stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

"Your mother was married to him before she married your grandfather."

I shook my head.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Because Jonathan was murdered."

"When?"

"Before you were born."

"By whom?"

My father looked away.

"That's the secret."

I whispered:

"Olivia?"

He didn't answer.

"Olivia killed my father?"

"No."

"Then who?"

My father finally looked at me.

"Your grandfather."

Silence.

I felt sick.

"Why would he kill his own son?"

"Because Jonathan discovered the money."

"What money?"

"The Sterling fortune."

I stared at him.

"He wasn't trying to steal it."

"No."

"He was trying to expose the Vale family."

"Yes."

"And Grandpa killed him."

"Yes."

I covered my mouth.

"Then why did he raise me?"

My father whispered:

"Because he regretted it."

I couldn't stop shaking.

"Why didn't my mother tell me?"

"Because she was afraid."

"Of Grandpa?"

"Of everyone."

"She knew?"

"Yes."

"She knew I was Jonathan's daughter."

"Yes."

"And she still let me believe I was a Vale."

"She wanted you alive."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone wanted me alive."

My father looked at me.

"But nobody wanted me to know why."

He didn't deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

A sound came from the corridor.

Adrian entered.

"Elena."

I looked up.

"Is Julian alive?"

"Yes."

"Can he talk?"

"He's awake."

"Take me to him."

Adrian hesitated.

"He asked for you."

We walked through the underground corridor.

Julian was lying on a medical table.

The bullet had passed through his shoulder.

He was pale.

But conscious.

When he saw me, his eyes changed.

"You know."

"Yes."

"Your father told you."

"Yes."

Julian closed his eyes.

"I wanted to tell you."

"When?"

"When I could get you out."

"Out of what?"

"The family."

I stared.

"You married me because Olivia ordered you to."

"At first."

"And later?"

"I stayed because I loved you."

I looked away.

"I don't know if I believe that."

"You don't have to."

"Did you know who my real father was?"

Julian nodded.

"Yes."

My heart tightened.

"How long?"

"Since before we married."

I looked at him.

"You knew I was Jonathan Sterling's daughter."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

"Because Olivia had your mother."

I froze.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"You said you knew."

"I knew she was alive."

"Not where."

"Correct."

I stared at him.

"Then why did Olivia want me?"

Julian swallowed.

"Because your DNA completes the Sterling succession."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"The original Sterling trust requires a direct descendant."

"I am one."

"Yes."

"And?"

Julian looked at me.

"You are the only surviving direct descendant."

I couldn't breathe.

"Alexander?"

"Not Sterling."

"My father?"

"Vale."

"Then I'm the last."

Julian nodded.

"The last Sterling."

The door opened.

Richard entered.

Everyone froze.

He looked at me.

"You finally know."

I stared at him.

"Did you know?"

"Yes."

"Everyone knew."

"Not everyone."

"Enough."

He stepped closer.

"Your grandfather wanted the truth buried."

"Why?"

"Because the Sterling fortune wasn't simply money."

"What was it?"

"Control."

"Of what?"

"The land."

"What land?"

Richard looked at Julian.

Then me.

"All of it."

I didn't understand.

He continued.

"Every resort your family built sits on Sterling land."

My stomach tightened.

"The titles were transferred illegally."

"Yes."

"Then the Vale family never owned the resorts."

"Correct."

I looked at Julian.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"That's why Olivia needs you."

Richard continued.

"Without Elena's signature, the Sterling land reverts to the original trust."

"How much land?"

"Most of the empire."

I felt dizzy.

"Then Olivia doesn't want my money."

"No."

"She wants my signature."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if you sign the transfer, the land becomes permanently Vale property."

I stared.

"And if I refuse?"

"Olivia loses everything."

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

My mother.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

Her hands tied.

A message beneath it.

ONE HOUR.

Then:

OR SHE DIES.

My blood went cold.

Richard looked at the screen.

"Olivia."

I nodded.

Another message arrived.

BRING THE ORCHID CARD.

Then:

COME ALONE.

Julian sat up.

"No."

I looked at him.

"She has my mother."

"It's a trap."

"I know."

"You can't go."

"I have to."

Richard stepped forward.

"You're making the same mistake your grandfather made."

"What mistake?"

"Believing you can trade yourself for someone else."

I looked at him.

"My mother is alive."

"And she wants you."

"Yes."

"Then you're exactly what she needs."

My father grabbed my arm.

"Elena."

I looked at him.

"Let me go."

"No."

"She'll kill Mom."

"We'll find another way."

"There isn't one."

"There is always another way."

I shook my head.

"Not when someone has already decided to die."

He stared.

"What do you mean?"

I looked at the photograph.

"My mother isn't waiting for us to rescue her."

"What?"

"She's waiting for me."

We reached the boardroom at 6:43 a.m.

I entered alone.

The room was dark.

Rain struck the windows.

A single light illuminated the table.

Olivia sat at the far end.

She looked elegant.

Calm.

Almost maternal.

She smiled.

"Elena."

I placed the Orchid card on the table.

"You wanted this."

"Yes."

"Where is my mother?"

"Safe."

"Bring her here."

Olivia shook her head.

"Not yet."

"You said—"

"I said she'd live if you came."

My jaw tightened.

"What do you want?"

"The signature."

I looked at the documents.

"Sterling succession transfer."

"Exactly."

"I sign, you release my mother."

"Yes."

"Then the empire becomes yours."

Olivia smiled.

"No."

I frowned.

"It becomes yours."

"What?"

"You become the legal owner."

I stared.

"Why?"

"Because you're the last Sterling."

She leaned back.

"The Vale family cannot legally own what was never theirs."

My heart pounded.

"You want me to legitimize everything."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because once you sign, nobody can ever challenge the empire again."

I looked at the document.

"And Julian?"

Olivia's smile disappeared.

"Julian was never meant to survive this."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"He became sentimental."

She looked toward the door.

"That was his mistake."

I stared.

"You shot him."

"No."

"Then who?"

She smiled.

"You did."

I froze.

"What?"

"You brought him here."

I looked around.

A red light appeared on the ceiling.

Camera.

Olivia continued:

"By entering this room with him in your mind, you activated the final condition."

"What condition?"

"The trust."

My blood went cold.

The Orchid card on the table began glowing.

A screen appeared.

FINAL SUCCESSION PROTOCOL.

I stared.

Olivia smiled.

"Sign."

"What happens if I do?"

"You become the richest woman in America."

"And if I don't?"

Olivia looked at the door.

A gunshot sounded somewhere outside.

My heart stopped.

She whispered:

"Your mother dies."

Another gunshot.

Then another.

I looked at Olivia.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

Because something had changed.

The guards outside weren't protecting her.

They were running.

Olivia stood.

"What is happening?"

The boardroom doors burst open.

Adrian entered.

Behind him came my father.

Alexander.

Richard.

And Julian.

Alive.

Blood on his shirt.

Gun in his hand.

Olivia stared.

"No."

Julian looked at her.

"You should have aimed better."

Her face collapsed.

I stepped away from the contract.

Olivia raised her weapon.

Adrian fired first.

Her gun flew from her hand.

She fell against the table.

My father rushed toward her.

"Where is my wife?"

Olivia laughed.

"You think she's here?"

My blood ran cold.

"Where is my mother?"

Olivia looked at me.

Then smiled.

"Ask your father."

Everyone became silent.

I turned.

My father couldn't meet my eyes.

"Dad?"

He whispered:

"Elena..."

"What did you do?"

He closed his eyes.

"I made a deal."

My heart stopped.

"With whom?"

He looked at Richard.

Then Julian.

Then me.

"With Jonathan Sterling."

I couldn't breathe.

"That's impossible."

"No."

He swallowed.

"He's alive."

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"My biological father is alive?"

My father nodded.

"And your mother is with him."

I felt the world tilt.

"Where?"

My father looked toward the window.

"Under the first resort."

I remembered the witness.

The hidden room.

The old records.

The person everyone believed had died.

Jonathan Sterling.

Alive.

Waiting.

And suddenly every secret my family had buried for thirty years pointed toward the same place.

Bellmont Grand.

The first resort.

The foundation of the empire.

And the place where my real family had been hiding.

I looked at Julian.

He stepped beside me.

"I'm coming."

I shook my head.

"This isn't your fight."

He looked at me.

"Everything became my fight the day I married you."

I almost laughed.

"That may be the first thing you've ever said that I believe."

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar in a way I couldn't explain.

"Elena."

My heart stopped.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

Then:

"My daughter."

I couldn't breathe.

The voice continued.

"Come home."

The line went dead.

I looked at my father.

He was crying.

And for the first time in my life, he said the words nobody had ever allowed him to say.

"Your father is waiting for you."

May you like

Outside, the rain stopped.

But somewhere beneath Bellmont Grand, a thirty-year-old secret had just opened its eyes.
