Chapter 11 — The Woman Celeste Betrayed

Chapter 11 — The Woman Celeste Betrayed

Celeste Rossi had spent eleven months believing she was the woman Julian Vale had chosen.

She had been wrong.

She had never been the chosen woman.

She had been the disposable one.

The realization came at 2:13 in the morning.

Celeste was sitting alone in the penthouse Julian had once promised would belong to her.

The city glittered below the windows.

Champagne sat untouched on the table.

Her phone was in her hand.

And on the screen was a document she had never been meant to see.

CONFIDENTIAL — LIABILITY ALLOCATION STRATEGY

Celeste read the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Her hands began to shake.

Her name appeared twenty-three times.

Not as Julian's partner.

Not as an investor.

Not as the woman he had promised to protect.

As the primary scapegoat.

The document was a legal strategy prepared for Julian's attorneys.

It contained possible explanations for the missing money.

Possible explanations for the false investor representations.

Possible explanations for the offshore transfers.

And beneath every explanation was one person.

Celeste Rossi.

Ms. Rossi acted independently.

Mr. Vale was unaware of the unauthorized transfers.

Ms. Rossi misrepresented her authority.

Mr. Vale relied upon information provided by Ms. Rossi.

Celeste stared at the words.

Then she laughed.

A short, broken laugh.

“He was going to blame me.”

She read the final section.

Recommended position: characterize Rossi as an emotionally unstable former associate who acted without authorization.

Her smile disappeared.

Emotionally unstable.

The same phrase Julian had used against Claire.

Now he was preparing to use it against her.

Celeste scrolled farther.

There was another document.

A proposed statement.

She read it.

Then read it again.

The statement claimed Celeste had manipulated Julian.

That she had pressured him into transferring money.

That she had created unauthorized investment structures.

That she had concealed information from the board.

It even suggested she had acted out of jealousy toward Claire.

Celeste's eyes filled with tears.

After everything she had done for him.

After every lie.

Every meeting.

Every secret transfer.

Every night she had spent believing she was helping build a future with him.

He was preparing to sacrifice her.

She looked around the penthouse.

The expensive furniture.

The marble floors.

The view.

The clothes Julian had bought.

The jewelry.

The flowers.

The life she once believed proved she had won.

Now everything looked like evidence.

She opened the drawer beneath the bar.

Inside was a small black drive.

She stared at it.

Then whispered:

“Fine.”

She picked it up.

“If you want a scapegoat…”

Her eyes hardened.

“I'll become your witness.”

At 7:10 the next morning, Claire received a call.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice spoke.

“It’s Celeste.”

Claire went silent.

“What do you want?”

“I need to see you.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“I don't trust you.”

“You shouldn't.”

Claire frowned.

Celeste continued.

“I betrayed you.”

“Yes.”

“I lied to you.”

“Yes.”

“I helped Julian.”

“Yes.”

Her voice cracked.

“But he betrayed me too.”

Claire said nothing.

“I have proof.”

That got her attention.

“What kind of proof?”

“Everything.”

They met at a quiet private office owned by Claire's family trust.

Celeste arrived wearing sunglasses despite the cloudy morning.

She looked exhausted.

No designer entourage.

No assistants.

No security.

Just one woman carrying a black case.

Claire sat across from her.

Daniel stood near the door.

Celeste placed the case on the table.

“This is everything I saved.”

Claire didn't touch it.

“Why now?”

Celeste looked at her.

“Because I finally realized what I was to him.”

“What?”

“A weapon.”

She swallowed.

“And when the weapon stopped being useful, he planned to destroy it.”

Claire studied her.

“You knew what he was doing to me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was taking my work.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was moving money.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

Claire's voice became colder.

“Then why should I help you?”

“You shouldn't.”

Celeste looked up.

“You should use me.”

Claire didn't expect that answer.

Celeste opened the case.

Inside were folders.

Dozens.

Each marked with a date.

She pushed the first one forward.

“Start here.”

The first email was from Julian.

Subject: Claire — Media Strategy

Claire read it.

The email discussed how to undermine her credibility if she ever challenged his ownership claims.

One sentence made Claire stop.

If she becomes emotional, the press will believe the marriage has become unstable.

Claire looked up.

“He wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“Who else received it?”

“His public relations director.”

Daniel took a photograph.

Celeste pushed forward another file.

“This one is worse.”

Claire opened it.

It contained a list of journalists.

Next to each name was a note.

Friendly.

Hostile.

Can be influenced.

Useful against Claire.

Claire stared at the list.

“He had a media campaign prepared before I even confronted him.”

Celeste nodded.

“He was planning for you to fight back.”

The next recording was audio.

Claire pressed play.

Julian's voice filled the room.

“If Claire refuses to cooperate, we make her look unstable.”

Another voice answered.

“And Celeste?”

Julian laughed.

“Celeste is easy.”

Claire froze.

The recording continued.

“If everything goes wrong, we say she acted alone.”

The other voice asked:

“She'll fight that.”

Julian replied:

“She won't have the money to fight me.”

Silence.

Then Julian said:

“Nobody protects a mistress when the husband stops paying.”

The recording ended.

Celeste stared at the floor.

Claire looked at her.

“You heard this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“And you stayed?”

Celeste's eyes filled with tears.

“I was stupid.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Celeste looked up.

“You were selfish.”

Celeste nodded.

“Yes.”

“But you were also being manipulated.”

Celeste looked surprised.

Claire continued.

“That doesn't excuse what you did.”

“I know.”

“But it explains why you're here.”

Another folder contained financial transfers.

Claire recognized several.

But one shocked her.

$146,000,000.

“What is this?”

Celeste leaned forward.

“That money was supposed to go to me.”

Claire looked at her.

“Why?”

“Julian promised me equity.”

“How much?”

“Ten percent.”

“Ten percent of what?”

“Several operating subsidiaries.”

Claire's expression hardened.

“He didn't own them.”

“I know that now.”

“He promised you assets he didn't control.”

Celeste nodded.

“And he told you they were his.”

“Yes.”

Claire stared at the documents.

“Then he wasn't only stealing from me.”

“No.”

“He was selling pieces of the company to you.”

“Yes.”

“Without authorization.”

“Yes.”

Celeste looked at her.

“He was creating a second ownership structure.”

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

Celeste answered quietly.

“To make it impossible for anyone to know who actually owned what.”

Claire leaned back.

Suddenly, several pieces fit together.

Julian hadn't simply been stealing.

He had been deliberately creating confusion.

If ownership became complicated enough, nobody could easily identify the original assets.

He could tell Claire she had no rights.

Tell investors they owned shares.

Tell Celeste she owned subsidiaries.

Tell lenders he owned property.

Tell the board the trust was irrelevant.

Everyone would believe a different version.

And Julian would control the chaos.

Claire whispered:

“He built a maze.”

Celeste nodded.

“And he intended to be the only person holding the map.”

The next recording was longer.

Claire hesitated before pressing play.

Julian's voice appeared again.

“Edward built the land structure.”

Claire froze.

Her father's name.

Celeste looked at her.

“I thought you knew.”

Claire shook her head.

“Keep playing.”

The recording continued.

“The problem is Claire.”

Another man asked:

“Why?”

“Because she understands the structure.”

“Can't you just buy her out?”

Julian laughed.

“She won't sell.”

“Then remove her.”

A pause.

Then Julian said:

“That's what the marriage is for.”

Claire's face went pale.

Celeste looked away.

Claire stared at the speaker.

The recording continued.

“Once she's married to me, we can separate personal and business authority. She'll trust me.”

The other man asked:

“And if she doesn't?”

Julian answered:

“She will.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Claire stood.

For several seconds, she walked toward the window.

She had suspected Julian had used her.

She had suspected he had planned around her.

But hearing him say it was different.

The marriage hadn't merely become corrupted.

It had been part of the strategy.

She had not been the woman behind the empire by accident.

She had been the target.

Celeste whispered:

“I am sorry.”

Claire turned.

“Don't apologize for something you can't undo.”

“I want to help.”

“Why?”

“Because I know what he is.”

Claire looked at her.

“No.”

Celeste frowned.

“Because I know what he became.”

She corrected herself.

“And I don't want anyone else to become his next victim.”

Claire studied her.

“You could disappear.”

“I could.”

“You could take your money and leave.”

“I could.”

“Why aren't you?”

Celeste looked down at the recordings.

“Because if I leave, he wins.”

Claire returned to the table.

“How much evidence do you have?”

Celeste smiled sadly.

“Enough to ruin him.”

“Financial?”

“Yes.”

“Corporate?”

“Yes.”

“Personal?”

Celeste hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Legal?”

“Yes.”

“Anything involving the board?”

Celeste nodded.

“Several recordings.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Back everything up.”

He immediately began copying the files.

Celeste watched him.

Then she said:

“There is one more.”

Claire looked at her.

“One more what?”

“Recording.”

“What's on it?”

Celeste's face changed.

“This one isn't about the money.”

“Then what?”

“Your marriage.”

Claire went still.

Celeste handed her another drive.

“This was recorded the night Julian decided to marry you.”

Claire looked at the drive.

“When was it recorded?”

“Two weeks before your wedding.”

“Who recorded it?”

“I did.”

Claire stared.

“Why?”

“I was already involved with him.”

Claire's eyes hardened.

“So you were with him before we married.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew about me.”

“Yes.”

Claire's voice became quiet.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Celeste looked ashamed.

“Because I thought he loved me.”

Claire looked away.

“Play it.”

Daniel connected the drive.

Julian's voice emerged.

“Once I marry Claire, everything becomes easier.”

Celeste's younger voice answered:

“You really love her?”

Julian laughed.

“Love isn't the point.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The recording continued.

“Her family controls the land.”

“Her father controls the trust.”

“She controls the strategy.”

“If I marry her, all three become accessible.”

Celeste asked:

“And me?”

Julian answered:

“You get your share later.”

The recording ended.

Claire opened her eyes.

There were no tears.

Something inside her had gone completely still.

Celeste whispered:

“I should have told you.”

Claire looked at her.

“Yes.”

“I was jealous.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted what you had.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I could become you.”

Claire's expression softened slightly.

“But you couldn't.”

Celeste shook her head.

“No.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

Celeste looked confused.

Claire continued.

“Because he didn't love either of us.”

She closed the laptop.

“He loved control.”

That afternoon, Claire's attorneys reviewed everything.

Their conclusion was immediate.

The recordings could establish intent.

The emails could establish planning.

The financial records could establish transfers.

The contracts could establish ownership.

And together, they could prove that Julian had knowingly misrepresented assets to investors.

But there was one problem.

The evidence needed to be authenticated.

Claire turned to Celeste.

“Will you testify?”

Celeste looked terrified.

“Yes.”

“You understand what that means?”

“Yes.”

“You'll be questioned.”

“I know.”

“Julian's lawyers will attack you.”

“I know.”

“They'll call you a liar.”

Celeste smiled faintly.

“They'll be right about one thing.”

“What?”

“I lied before.”

She looked Claire directly in the eyes.

“But not now.”

At 6:00 p.m., Julian received a message.

He opened it.

A photograph of Celeste sitting across from Claire.

His face changed.

He immediately called Celeste.

She didn't answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then a text appeared.

Don't contact me again.

Julian stared.

Another message followed.

I gave Claire everything.

His hand tightened around the phone.

Then:

You taught me that loyalty has a price.

Now I'm charging you for it.

Julian threw the phone against the wall.

The next morning, his lawyers arrived with terrible news.

“Celeste has retained counsel.”

Julian stared.

“What kind?”

“Criminal defense.”

His face hardened.

“What does she have?”

The lawyer hesitated.

“Enough.”

“How much is enough?”

“We don't know.”

Julian paced.

“She can't destroy me.”

His lawyer looked at him.

“Mr. Vale…”

“What?”

“You should prepare for the possibility that she can.”

Julian stopped.

For years, lawyers had told him what he wanted to hear.

Now they were telling him the truth.

And the truth was terrifying.

That evening, Claire stood alone in her office.

Celeste's evidence filled three screens.

Emails.

Contracts.

Transfers.

Recordings.

Dates.

Names.

She had spent nine years trying to understand how the man she loved had become someone capable of destroying her.

Now she knew.

He hadn't changed overnight.

He had simply become more honest about who he had always been.

Her phone rang.

It was Celeste.

Claire answered.

“Hello?”

Celeste's voice was barely audible.

“Claire.”

“What happened?”

“I found something else.”

“What?”

A pause.

“Something Julian never knew I had.”

Claire straightened.

“What is it?”

“An original recording.”

“Of what?”

“Julian speaking to your father.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before your wedding.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“What did they discuss?”

Celeste took a breath.

“Your father knew Julian was using you.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“What else?”

“He knew about the marriage.”

“What else?”

“And he knew Julian was planning to take control of the family assets.”

Claire's voice became a whisper.

“Then why did my father allow the wedding?”

Celeste didn't answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice trembled.

“Because your father wasn't trying to protect himself.”

Claire froze.

“He was trying to protect you.”

The line went silent.

Then Celeste added:

“And Claire…”

“Yes?”

“Your father knew Julian would betray you.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“How?”

Celeste whispered:

“Because he expected him to.”

The call ended.

Claire stood alone in the dark office.

For years, she had believed her father's death marked the end of the family's secrets.

Now she realized it had only buried them.

And somewhere inside an old recording, her father might have left the answer to the question Claire had never thought to ask:

Why had he allowed her to marry the man who would eventually try to destroy her?

She looked at the files on her desk.

Then toward the portrait of Edward Vale.

“Dad…”

Her voice broke.

“What did you know?”

May you like

And for the first time, Claire understood that defeating Julian might not be the final chapter.

It might only be the beginning of uncovering why the entire family had been preparing for his betrayal long before he ever realized he was being watched.
