At midnight, Adrian's phone exploded with notifications.
Credit lines suspended.
Corporate accounts frozen.
Emergency board meeting called.
His chief financial officer called first.
"Adrian..."
"They know everything."
"What?"
"The shell companies."
"The fake consulting contracts."
"The offshore transfers."
"They have every document."
Adrian slowly looked at Evelyn.
"You..."
She nodded.
"I copied them myself."
Vanessa grabbed Adrian's arm.
"Tell them she's lying!"
But another investigator approached.
"Ms. Vanessa Brooks?"
"Yes?"
"You're under investigation for conspiracy, fraud, tax evasion, and destruction of financial records."
She stepped backward.
"No... there must be some mistake."
"There isn't."
Another agent placed a small evidence bag on the table.
Inside rested Evelyn's diamond pendant.
"The audio recording captured tonight's assault."
"The previous threats."
"And discussions concerning financial crimes."
Adrian felt his knees weaken.
"You planned this."
Evelyn looked at him calmly.
"No."
"You planned your own downfall."
"I simply stopped protecting you."
Outside, television news vans had already arrived.
