Chapter 2: The Boardroom Without a King

Chapter 2: The Boardroom Without a King

At exactly 8:00 a.m., the executive boardroom doors closed.

Marcus strode in wearing his usual confidence.

"Morning, everyone."

No one answered.

Every board member remained seated.

The company's chief legal counsel stood instead.

"Mr. Hayes, before today's agenda begins, there is one matter that must be addressed."

Marcus frowned.

"What matter?"

The attorney slid a leather folder across the table.

"Article Nine of the Sinclair Family Trust."

Marcus laughed.

"I've signed every trust document this company has."

"You signed operating agreements," the attorney replied calmly.

"You never signed the trust."

Confused murmurs spread around the room.

The chairman looked toward the large screen at the end of the table.

A scanned document appeared.

It carried the signature of Amelia's late father.

Then another.

Then the trust charter.

Beneath one highlighted paragraph were the words:

The controlling beneficiary shall remain a direct descendant of the Sinclair family. No spouse shall obtain voting control through marriage.

Marcus's smile disappeared.

"That's impossible."

"No," the attorney said.

"It's binding."

"The majority voting shares have never belonged to you."

The board secretary placed another document before him.

Effective immediately, your authority as Chief Executive Officer is suspended pending a vote of confidence.

Marcus looked toward the door.

Amelia had quietly entered.

She wore a navy suit instead of yesterday's rain-soaked coat.

Every director rose to greet her.

"Good morning, Chairwoman."

For the first time in eleven years, Marcus realized he had never been the most powerful person in the room.
