Chapter 4: Celeste's Betrayal

Chapter 4: Celeste's Betrayal

Federal investigators entered the hall carrying sealed evidence cases.

Nathan stared in disbelief.

"How..."

Jonathan answered calmly.

"My daughter collected evidence for six months."

One investigator placed several folders on the table.

Offshore accounts.

Fake invoices.

Wire transfers.

Corporate espionage.

Money laundering.

Everything.

Nathan turned toward Celeste.

"You told me those accounts were safe."

She looked away.

"I..."

"You said nobody could trace them!"

She whispered,

"I lied."

Nathan froze.

"You used me."

Celeste laughed bitterly.

"No."

"We used each other."

She reached into her handbag.

Removed another phone.

Handed it to investigators.

"I've been recording Nathan for almost a year."

Nathan looked horrified.

"You betrayed me?"

Celeste smiled sadly.

"The moment I realized prison was possible..."

"...I chose survival."

Nathan suddenly understood.

He had trusted the one person least deserving of it.

Exactly as he had distrusted the one person who truly loved him.
