CHAPTER 11 — THE MAN BEHIND JULIAN

CHAPTER 11 — THE MAN BEHIND JULIAN
"Your father."
The two words destroyed whatever certainty I had left.
I stared at Julian.
Then at my mother.
Then at the empty doorway where my father had disappeared.
"No."
The word escaped my lips before I could stop it.
"No."
Julian didn't move.
I stepped toward him.
"Say it again."
His eyes were filled with regret.
"Your father ordered the attack."
My hands began to shake.
"You said my mother was dying."
"She was."
"You said she made you promise."
"She did."
"And now you're telling me my father ordered it?"
Julian nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at Emma.
She was crying.
"Did you know?"
She shook her head.
"No."
I turned to Lucia.
"What about you?"
Lucia's expression was grim.
"I suspected."
"You suspected my father tried to kill my mother?"
"Yes."
"And nobody told me?"
Nobody answered.
I laughed.
It sounded almost hysterical.
"Of course."
I looked around the room.
"Why would anyone tell me the truth?"
I wiped my tears.
"Apparently I'm the last person who deserves to know anything about my own life."
Julian stepped forward.
I raised my hand.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"You don't get to comfort me."
"I know."
"You don't get to explain."
"I know."
"You don't get to tell me you were protecting me."
He lowered his head.
"I know."
"Then tell me one thing."
He looked up.
"How did my father order my mother's death?"
Julian swallowed.
"Through Robert."
I stared at him.
"Robert?"
"Yes."
"Then why would Robert obey him?"
"Because your father had something Robert wanted."
"What?"
"The original Moretti records."
I frowned.
"That's impossible."
"Your father found them before Robert did."
"Where?"
"With your mother."
I felt cold.
"So my father knew the truth about the Morettis."
"Yes."
"And he knew my mother was alive."
"Yes."
"And he knew about Lucia."
"Yes."
"And he still lied to me."
"Yes."
I stepped back.
"Why?"
Julian looked at me.
"Because he believed he was saving you."
I shook my head.
"Everyone always says that."
He whispered:
"Your father believed the only way to keep you alive was to make everyone think you were the last heir."
"But I wasn't."
"No."
"Lucia was."
"Yes."
"And Maria?"
"We still don't know."
I closed my eyes.
The pieces were becoming clearer.
But there was still something missing.
Something Julian wasn't telling me.
I opened my eyes.
"What did Robert promise you?"
Julian froze.
"What?"
"Adrian said Robert promised you something more valuable than money."
Julian looked away.
"Tell me."
He said nothing.
"Julian."
His jaw tightened.
"Your mother."
I stared.
"You already said that."
"No."
He looked at me.
"I mean something else."
My heartbeat quickened.
"What?"
"Robert promised to bring your mother back."
I frowned.
"But you said she was dying."
"She wasn't supposed to die."
My stomach dropped.
"What happened?"
"Robert changed the plan."
Julian sat down.
For the first time, he looked like a man who had been carrying a confession for years.
"Seven years ago, I found Isabella."
"Where?"
"Portugal."
"How?"
"Through an account your grandmother had created."
"Was she alone?"
"No."
"Who was with her?"
"Maria."
My heart stopped.
"Maria?"
Julian nodded.
"Your mother had been hiding with her."
I stared.
"So Maria was alive."
"Yes."
"Seven years ago."
"Yes."
"Then what happened?"
Julian closed his eyes.
"Robert found them."
I felt sick.
"What did he do?"
"He sent people."
"To kill them?"
"Yes."
"And my father?"
"He knew."
"Did he order it?"
Julian hesitated.
"Your father gave Robert the location."
I couldn't breathe.
"Why?"
"Because Robert threatened to expose you."
"Expose me for what?"
Julian looked at me.
"The truth about your birth."
I froze.
"What truth?"
"That you weren't legally Elena Laurent."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"Your birth certificate was altered."
"Why?"
"Because your grandmother wanted to make you the primary heir."
I shook my head.
"I don't understand."
"Your mother had already registered you as a Moretti."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Julian nodded.
"You were born under the Moretti family name."
I looked at Lucia.
She closed her eyes.
"It's true."
My world shifted.
"My name isn't Elena Laurent."
"Not originally."
"Then who am I?"
Lucia stepped forward.
"Elena Moretti."
I stared at her.
My entire life had been built around a name that wasn't mine.
My school records.
My passport.
My marriage certificate.
My company shares.
Everything.
"Why would my grandmother change my name?"
"Because the Moretti inheritance belonged to you."
I frowned.
"But Lucia was the heir."
"Before you."
"What changed?"
Lucia looked at me.
"You were born."
I didn't understand.
"Why did that matter?"
"Because your mother was the last direct Moretti descendant."
"And I was her child."
"Exactly."
I looked at Luka.
He nodded.
"Your mother was my granddaughter."
I stared.
"So my mother was a Moretti."
"Yes."
"And I inherited the Moretti bloodline."
"Yes."
"Then why did my grandmother call me Laurent?"
"To hide the inheritance."
I laughed bitterly.
"So the entire Laurent empire..."
"Was built around a lie."
Adrian suddenly spoke.
"Not just a lie."
Everyone looked at him.
He walked toward the table.
"A fraud."
He placed a thick folder beside the original Moretti certificate.
"Robert has been preparing this for years."
I opened it.
Inside were legal filings.
Bank records.
Court documents.
Ownership claims.
And one enormous lawsuit.
MORETTI FAMILY VS. LAURENT HOLDINGS
The amount of damages made my stomach turn.
$18.4 billion.
I looked at Adrian.
"What is this?"
"The value of the assets your family took."
"Why now?"
"Because Robert finally has enough evidence."
I stared at the papers.
"He wants to destroy us."
"No."
Adrian smiled.
"He wants you to destroy yourself."
I frowned.
"How?"
"He wants you to publicly acknowledge the Moretti claim."
"Why?"
"Because once you do, every Laurent asset becomes legally questionable."
I understood.
"If I admit the empire came from the Morettis..."
"Then every investor can sue."
"Every bank can demand repayment."
"Every shareholder can challenge ownership."
"Exactly."
I looked at Adrian.
"And Robert wins."
He smiled.
"Not exactly."
I narrowed my eyes.
"Then what does he want?"
Adrian leaned closer.
"He wants the empire to collapse."
"Why?"
"Because when it collapses, he buys it."
The room went silent.
I understood.
Robert didn't need to steal the empire.
He only needed to make it worthless.
Then he could purchase the pieces for pennies.
One resort at a time.
One property at a time.
One company at a time.
He would destroy the Laurent name—
and rebuild it under himself.
My father had spent decades protecting the empire.
Julian had spent nine years inside it.
Robert had spent twenty-nine years planning its destruction.
And I was standing at the center of all three.
"Where is my father?"
No one answered.
I turned toward Adrian.
"You know."
He smiled.
"Of course."
"Where?"
"At the Laurent headquarters."
My blood froze.
"What is he doing there?"
"Signing documents."
"What documents?"
"Transfer agreements."
"To Robert?"
"Yes."
I grabbed my coat.
Julian stood.
"I'm coming."
"No."
"Elena—"
"You've lied to me for nine years."
"I know."
"You kept secrets from me."
"I know."
"You helped Robert."
"Yes."
"So why would I trust you now?"
He looked at me.
"You shouldn't."
That answer stopped me.
He continued.
"But you should let me come."
"Why?"
"Because I know where the traps are."
We drove through the city.
No security convoy.
No flashing lights.
Just one car.
Me.
Julian.
Emma.
And Lucia.
The four of us sat in silence.
Then Emma spoke.
"There's something you should know."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"I wasn't the only person Sophia."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"Robert had another operative inside your company."
"Who?"
She looked at Julian.
"His name is Daniel."
My heart stopped.
"Daniel?"
"Your brother."
I stared.
"Daniel died."
Emma shook her head.
"That's what everyone was told."
I couldn't breathe.
"My brother is alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
She hesitated.
"Inside Laurent Holdings."
I felt dizzy.
"What does he look like?"
Emma opened her phone.
She showed me a photograph.
A man in his early thirties.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
A scar across his jaw.
I stared.
Something about him felt familiar.
Then I recognized the face.
I had seen him before.
At the company.
He was one of our senior financial directors.
The man who had advised Julian on every major acquisition.
I whispered:
"Daniel Vale."
Emma nodded.
"No."
I stared at her.
"Daniel Laurent."
My hands went cold.
"He's alive."
"Yes."
"Then why did everyone say he died?"
"Because Robert needed him to disappear."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel knew the original ownership structure."
"And he worked for Robert?"
"At first."
I looked at Julian.
"Does he know?"
Julian nodded.
"I discovered it two years ago."
I closed my eyes.
"Another secret."
"I'm sorry."
"No."
I looked at him.
"Stop apologizing."
He went quiet.
"Start telling me everything."
He nodded.
"Daniel was the person who created the financial trap."
My stomach tightened.
"The billion-dollar debt?"
"Yes."
"Robert ordered him?"
"Yes."
"Then why would he betray his own family?"
Julian hesitated.
"Because he believed the family abandoned him."
I looked at Emma.
She nodded.
"He was told everyone was dead."
"Who told him?"
"Robert."
"And he believed it."
"Yes."
I stared through the window.
My family wasn't simply divided.
It had been deliberately broken apart.
Every child had been given a different story.
Every adult had been given a different enemy.
Robert had spent decades making us fight each other.
We reached Laurent headquarters at 11:47 p.m.
The building was almost empty.
The lobby lights were on.
But the elevators were disabled.
Julian looked at me.
"Stairs."
We climbed twenty-three floors.
At the top, we heard voices.
My father's.
Robert's.
And another.
A younger man's.
Daniel.
I opened the door.
Everyone turned.
My father stood behind the conference table.
Robert was beside him.
Daniel stood near the window.
Documents covered the table.
I looked at my father.
"Stop."
He froze.
Robert smiled.
"You came."
I walked inside.
"What are you signing?"
My father looked ashamed.
"The transfer agreements."
"Why?"
"Because Robert has your mother."
I stared.
"She's dead."
"No."
My blood froze.
"What?"
Robert smiled.
"She's alive."
I looked at him.
"You said—"
"I lied."
He leaned against the table.
"Your mother is alive."
My heart began pounding.
"Where?"
"Safe."
"Bring her here."
"Not yet."
"Then what do you want?"
Robert pointed at the documents.
"Your signature."
I laughed.
"You don't get it."
He smiled.
"I think I do."
"You can't force me."
"Can't I?"
He pressed a button.
The screen behind him turned on.
A live video appeared.
My mother.
Alive.
Sitting in a chair.
Her hands tied.
My breath stopped.
"Mom."
She looked toward the camera.
Her eyes widened.
"Elena."
I ran toward the screen.
Robert blocked me.
"You sign."
I stared at him.
"Then release her."
"Yes."
I looked at the documents.
"How much?"
"Everything."
"The resorts?"
"Everything."
"The trusts?"
"Everything."
"The Moretti assets?"
"Everything."
"And then?"
"Your mother walks."
I stared at him.
"You're asking me to give you billions."
"No."
He smiled.
"I'm asking you to give me what was already mine."
I looked at my father.
"Did you make a deal with him?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't lose your mother again."
I swallowed.
"You already lost her."
He looked at me.
"Then don't make me lose you too."
I stepped toward the table.
Robert smiled.
He thought I was surrendering.
He was wrong.
I picked up the pen.
Everyone watched.
I signed the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Robert smiled.
"Good."
I kept signing.
Page after page.
Until I reached the final document.
I stopped.
Robert leaned closer.
"What?"
I looked at the bottom.
There was a clause.
One sentence.
TRANSFER VOID IF EXECUTED UNDER DURESS OR COERCION.
I smiled.
Robert's face changed.
"You didn't read it."
"I did."
He grabbed my wrist.
"You think this is a game?"
"No."
I looked at the security camera above him.
"It's evidence."
His face went white.
"You've been recording?"
I held up my watch.
"Everything."
The room fell silent.
Then Daniel laughed.
Robert turned.
"What?"
Daniel looked at him.
"I told you she was smarter than you."
Robert stared.
"Daniel?"
Daniel removed his jacket.
Underneath was a recording device.
"I've been recording you for three years."
Robert's face turned pale.
My father stared at Daniel.
"You betrayed me."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He looked at me.
"I came home."
The doors opened.
Police entered.
Behind them were federal investigators.
Robert stepped backward.
"This is impossible."
Daniel smiled.
"Not anymore."
Emma entered behind the officers.
Lucia followed.
And finally—
my mother.
Alive.
Walking.
No restraints.
I stared.
She ran toward me.
I caught her.
For the first time in twenty-nine years, my mother's arms were around me.
I cried.
She cried.
Neither of us spoke.
Then I felt her whisper against my hair.
"I'm sorry."
I held her tighter.
"Don't leave again."
"Never."
Robert was handcuffed.
As officers led him away, he looked at me.
"You think you've won."
I looked at him.
"No."
He smiled.
"Good."
"You haven't."
His smile disappeared.
"Because the empire isn't yours."
I looked at the documents.
"You're right."
He stared.
"I don't want it."
He laughed.
"Then what will you do?"
I looked at Lucia.
Then Luka.
Then my mother.
Then my sisters.
Then Julian.
Finally, I looked at my father.
"The empire will be returned."
Robert's face changed.
"To whom?"
I answered:
"The people it was stolen from."
But before the officers took him away, Robert whispered something.
Something only I could hear.
"Ask your father who killed Daniel."
I froze.
Daniel.
My brother.
The man standing across the room.
Alive.
I turned toward my father.
His face had gone pale.
Daniel looked at him.
"What did he mean?"
My father said nothing.
Daniel's expression changed.
He looked at me.
Then at our father.
And whispered:
"He didn't mean me."
Silence.
"Then who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"The real Daniel."
I stared.
"What?"
Daniel looked terrified.
"The baby who died..."
He took a step backward.
"...wasn't Daniel."
My heart stopped.
He continued:
"Robert switched the babies."
My mother covered her mouth.
Emma began crying.
And my father whispered the words that destroyed the last piece of our family history.
"The child who died that night..."
He looked at me.
"...was someone else."
The room went silent.
And somewhere deep inside me, I understood.
May you like
We hadn't uncovered the final secret.
We had only found the door.
