Chapter 9 — The Video That Changed Everything

Chapter 9 — The Video That Changed Everything

At 2:13 in the morning, Mariana received a video.

No message.

No explanation.

Just a file.

CAM-17.mp4

She stared at the screen for several seconds before pressing play.

The image was dark.

Grainy.

A single light flickered overhead.

Then she heard a child's voice.

“Mommy?”

Mariana's heart stopped.

“Camila?”

The camera moved.

Her daughter appeared on the screen.

She was sitting on a narrow bed.

Her yellow pajamas were wrinkled.

Her hair was messy.

But she was alive.

Mariana covered her mouth.

“Oh, God…”

Beside her stood a woman.

Black coat.

Silver bird ring.

Isabel.

Then the camera turned toward the doorway.

A man entered.

Mariana stopped breathing.

She knew him.

Daniel knew him too.

His father.

The man who had supposedly been dead for nine years.

But the next thing he did changed everything.

He looked directly into the camera and said:

“Mariana, if you're watching this, they have already lied to you.”

The screen went black.

Mariana dropped the phone.

“Play it again.”

Daniel stood behind her.

His face was pale.

Mariana pressed play.

The same recording.

The same room.

The same people.

The same sentence.

When it ended, Daniel whispered:

“He knew you would see it.”

Mariana nodded.

“He wanted me to.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Andrés walked into the room.

“Send me the original.”

Mariana forwarded it.

He examined the file.

“It's been edited.”

Mariana looked at him.

“How?”

“Someone removed approximately three minutes.”

“What was removed?”

“I don't know yet.”

“Can you recover it?”

“Maybe.”

He connected the phone to his laptop.

A progress bar appeared.

Mariana stared at it.

For the first time since Camila disappeared, she had something she hadn't had before.

Proof.

Her daughter was alive.

And someone wanted her to know.

At 3:07 a.m., Andrés stopped typing.

“I found something.”

Mariana moved closer.

The recovered footage began.

The room appeared again.

Camila sat on the bed.

Isabel stood behind her.

But this time, the door opened before the older man entered.

Someone else walked in.

Mariana froze.

Carmen.

She was carrying a folder.

Carmen approached the camera.

“Are you recording?”

The older man nodded.

“For her.”

Carmen laughed coldly.

“She doesn't deserve the truth.”

Mariana's stomach turned.

Carmen placed the folder on the table.

“This ends tonight.”

The older man looked at her.

“You've said that before.”

“Because you keep failing.”

“I didn't fail.”

“You allowed the child to survive.”

Silence.

Mariana's hand flew to her mouth.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His mother's voice continued.

“Three years ago, you promised me the baby would disappear.”

The older man answered:

“I changed my mind.”

“You had no right.”

“I had every right.”

“She belongs to the program.”

“No.”

His voice became hard.

“She belongs to her mother.”

Mariana's eyes filled with tears.

Carmen leaned closer.

“You're becoming sentimental.”

“No.”

“You're protecting Mariana.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The man looked toward the camera.

“Because I finally understand what you did.”

Carmen's expression hardened.

“What did I do?”

“You destroyed your own son.”

Daniel stepped backward.

His breathing became unsteady.

The recording continued.

Carmen stared at the older man.

“You think Daniel is innocent?”

“No.”

“He signed the documents.”

“He was seventeen.”

“He understood.”

“He was threatened.”

“He could have refused.”

“You know what would have happened to Sofia.”

Carmen went silent.

The older man continued.

“You used your own children to protect a secret that should have died years ago.”

Carmen's voice became cold.

“And now you're going to destroy us all?”

“No.”

He looked at the camera.

“I'm going to tell Mariana the truth.”

Carmen's face changed.

“No.”

The video abruptly ended.

Nobody spoke.

The office was silent.

Mariana stared at the frozen screen.

Daniel looked devastated.

“My mother knew.”

“Yes,” Mariana said.

“She knew everything.”

“Yes.”

“She knew Camila was alive.”

Mariana looked at him.

“She knew where she was.”

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“And she still let us search.”

Mariana didn't answer.

Because the truth hurt too much.

At dawn, police arrived at Lucía's office.

The detective watched the video twice.

Then asked:

“Where did you get this?”

“Unknown sender.”

“Did you respond?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He looked at the screen.

“This changes the case.”

“How?”

“We now have evidence that Carmen and your husband's father were involved in the child's disappearance.”

Mariana corrected him.

“They didn't disappear her.”

The detective looked at her.

“They know where she is.”

“Yes.”

“That is kidnapping.”

Mariana nodded.

“Then find her.”

The police traced the video.

The server was located overseas.

Then redirected through six different networks.

But Andrés noticed something.

“Wait.”

He paused the tracing program.

“What?”

“The original upload came from a local connection.”

“Where?”

He zoomed in.

A rural district.

Less than forty kilometers away.

Mariana's heart raced.

“Can you locate it?”

“Not exactly.”

“Try.”

Minutes passed.

Then Andrés pointed to the screen.

“I have an address.”

Everyone leaned closer.

The location was an abandoned property.

A former children's rehabilitation center.

Mariana recognized the name.

Saint Helena House.

She had heard Carmen mention it once.

Years ago.

A place she supposedly donated money to.

A place she never allowed Mariana to visit.

Daniel stared at the address.

“My mother owns that property.”

The detective immediately stood.

“Then we're going.”

The police convoy reached Saint Helena House at 6:42 a.m.

The building looked abandoned.

Windows broken.

Paint peeling.

Tall grass surrounding the property.

But there were tire tracks in the mud.

Fresh ones.

The detective raised his weapon.

“Everyone stay behind me.”

They entered.

The first floor was empty.

Dust.

Broken furniture.

Old medical equipment.

Then Mariana saw something.

A child's drawing taped to the wall.

A house.

A woman.

A little girl.

And a silver bird.

Mariana touched it.

“Camila.”

Daniel looked around.

“She was here.”

They followed the hallway.

A locked door stood at the end.

The detective broke it.

Inside was a small room.

A bed.

A blanket.

A stuffed rabbit.

And a child's cup.

Mariana collapsed to her knees.

“She was here.”

Then Andrés called from the hallway.

“Mariana.”

She stood.

He was holding something.

A small camera.

Still recording.

“It's connected to the video.”

Mariana stared.

“Can we see what happened?”

Andrés pressed play.

The screen showed Camila sitting on the bed.

Then Isabel entered.

She knelt beside the child.

“Your mother loves you.”

Camila nodded.

“Then why can't I go home?”

“Because people are trying to hurt her.”

“Who?”

Isabel hesitated.

“People who don't want your mother to know the truth.”

Camila looked toward the camera.

“What truth?”

Before Isabel could answer, the door opened.

Carmen entered.

She looked furious.

“You were supposed to move her.”

“I was waiting.”

“Waiting for what?”

“The right moment.”

“There is no right moment.”

Carmen grabbed the child's arm.

Camila cried out.

Mariana covered her mouth.

Daniel took a step toward the screen.

“Mom…”

The recording continued.

Isabel stepped between them.

“Don't touch her.”

Carmen glared.

“You're forgetting who owns this place.”

“No.”

Isabel looked at her.

“I'm remembering exactly who you are.”

Carmen smiled.

“Then you should remember what happened to the last person who betrayed me.”

The screen flickered.

Then the older man appeared.

He walked into the room.

Carmen turned.

“You.”

He looked at Camila.

“Take the child.”

Isabel shook her head.

“Where?”

“Somewhere safe.”

Carmen shouted:

“She doesn't leave!”

The older man looked at her.

“She already has.”

Carmen reached for a weapon.

The video ended.

Mariana stared at the screen.

“Where did they take her?”

Nobody knew.

The detective ordered his team to search the entire property.

They found nothing.

Then one officer shouted from the basement.

“We found a tunnel!”

Mariana ran downstairs.

A hidden passage led beneath the building.

Fresh footprints marked the dirt.

They followed them for nearly half a kilometer.

Then the tunnel opened into an underground garage.

Empty.

Except for one vehicle.

A black sedan.

The engine was still warm.

Mariana's heart pounded.

“She was here.”

Daniel found something on the passenger seat.

A tiny silver bird pendant.

He picked it up.

“Camila's.”

Mariana took it from him.

Tears streamed down her face.

“She was here.”

The detective looked around.

“There's something else.”

On the windshield was an envelope.

Mariana opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG CHILD.

Mariana stared.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel read the second line.

His face turned white.

CAMILA WAS NEVER THE ONE THEY WANTED.

The words made no sense.

Until Andrés found another file inside the car.

M-17.

The first page listed several children.

Most had been crossed out.

One name remained.

SOFIA HERRERA.

Mariana looked at Daniel.

“Your sister.”

He nodded slowly.

Then they turned the page.

A second name appeared beneath it.

SUBJECT M-17B — FEMALE — UNKNOWN IDENTITY.

No name.

No birth date.

Only one note:

Transferred at birth.

Mariana's hands began shaking.

“Transferred where?”

Andrés looked at the final line.

His expression changed.

“To the Torres family.”

Mariana felt the world disappear beneath her.

Daniel whispered:

“Mariana…”

She couldn't speak.

The detective took the document.

“Are you saying Camila may not be the child connected to this?”

Mariana stared at the page.

“No.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“I am her mother.”

The detective looked at her.

“Biologically?”

Mariana's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.”

That was the first time she admitted it.

Not to Daniel.

Not to the court.

Not even to herself.

But now the question existed.

And it was more terrifying than anything Carmen had done.

Later that morning, the police discovered security footage from a nearby gas station.

A black sedan had passed at 5:58 a.m.

The driver's face was visible.

Isabel.

The passenger was Carmen.

But Camila wasn't inside.

There was someone else.

A young woman.

Holding a baby.

Mariana stared at the image.

“Who is she?”

Nobody knew.

Then Daniel noticed the woman wearing a silver bird pendant.

The same symbol.

He zoomed in.

The woman looked directly at the camera.

And Mariana recognized her face.

She had seen it before.

In an old wedding photograph.

At the hospital.

In the M-17 files.

She was standing beside Mariana's father.

The woman who had supposedly died before Mariana was born.

Mariana whispered her name.

“Lucía.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Who?”

“My mother's sister.”

The detective frowned.

“Your aunt?”

“She died twenty-eight years ago.”

Andrés stared at the screen.

“Apparently not.”

That evening, Mariana returned home alone.

The apartment was silent.

Camila's toys were still scattered across the floor.

Her little shoes were beside the couch.

Her favorite rabbit sat on the bed.

Mariana picked it up.

She pressed it against her chest.

“I'll find you,” she whispered.

Then she heard a sound.

A notification.

Her laptop turned on by itself.

The screen displayed one sentence.

STOP SEARCHING FOR CAMILA.

Mariana froze.

Another message appeared.

OR YOU WILL NEVER MEET YOUR REAL DAUGHTER.

Her hands began to shake.

Then a final file appeared.

A video.

Mariana stared at it.

She knew she shouldn't open it.

She opened it anyway.

The screen showed a hospital room.

A young woman lay on a bed.

A newborn baby cried beside her.

Mariana recognized the room.

She recognized the woman.

She recognized the date.

It was the day Camila was supposedly born.

But the woman on the bed wasn't Mariana.

It was someone else.

And standing beside her was Carmen.

Holding the newborn.

Then the camera moved.

A second baby appeared.

A nurse carried the infant into another room.

The screen went black.

A message appeared:

NOW ASK YOUR HUSBAND WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SECOND BABY.

Mariana slowly lowered herself into the chair.

Daniel had told her he had lived two lives.

He had lied about Sofia.

His mother had lied about everything.

But this was different.

If the video was real, then the foundation of her entire family was a lie.

And somewhere in the city, two children had been switched.

One had been raised as Camila.

The other had disappeared.

Mariana wiped her tears.

Then she called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Mariana?”

Her voice was steady.

“Come home.”

“What happened?”

“I know about the second baby.”

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“You found it.”

Mariana's heart stopped.

“You already knew?”

Another silence.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

She closed her eyes.

“Then tomorrow,” she said quietly, “you're going to tell me everything.”

Daniel swallowed.

“And if I don't?”

Mariana looked at the frozen image of the two newborn babies.

“Then I'll find the truth without you.”

She ended the call.

Outside, headlights stopped beneath her window.

A black car.

Someone stepped out.

Mariana watched from behind the curtain.

The person looked up directly at her window.

Then raised one hand.

In it was Camila's little yellow backpack.

Mariana's breath caught.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“You wanted your daughter.”

Mariana couldn't speak.

“Then come alone.”

The line went dead.

She looked at the backpack.

Then at the dark street.

And for the first time, she understood the real purpose of the video.

It hadn't been sent to help her find Camila.

May you like

It had been sent to lead her somewhere.

Straight into the hands of the people who had been controlling her family long before she ever knew their names.
