CHAPTER 12 — The Mother Who Betrayed Her Own Son

CHAPTER 12 — The Mother Who Betrayed Her Own Son
Judith was sitting alone in the dining room when Lauren entered.
No lights were on.
Only the pale glow from the city filtered through the windows.
Judith looked older than she had that morning.
Her shoulders were bent.
Her hands trembled slightly.
On the table sat a single envelope.
Lauren stopped several feet away.
"You knew I was coming."
Judith nodded.
"I knew."
"Then you know why."
"Yes."
Lauren placed the photograph on the table.
The photograph of her father.
Arthur.
Charles.
Judith.
And the woman whose face had been scratched away.
"Who is she?"
Judith stared at the photograph.
For a long time, she didn't answer.
Then she whispered:
"My sister."
Lauren frowned.
"Your sister?"
Judith nodded.
"Her name was Eleanor."
Lauren waited.
Judith touched the photograph.
"She was the person who started everything."
Lauren pulled out a chair.
"Tell me."
Judith looked at her.
"I don't know where to begin."
"Begin with the signature."
Judith closed her eyes.
"I forged your father's signature."
Lauren's jaw tightened.
"I know."
"But I didn't create the document."
"Who did?"
"Eleanor."
Lauren stared.
"Why?"
"Because she believed the Whitmore family had stolen everything from her."
Lauren frowned.
"What did your family steal?"
Judith looked toward the window.
"The original Voss trust."
Lauren's breath caught.
"Again?"
Judith nodded.
"But this time, there is something you don't know."
She took the envelope from the table.
"Your father wasn't the first person who tried to protect you."
Lauren opened it.
Inside were letters.
Dozens of them.
All written by Eleanor.
Lauren read the first page.
The handwriting was elegant.
The words were not.
Richard, if you continue hiding Lauren's identity, one day she will hate you for it.
Lauren looked up.
"She knew me?"
"She knew about you."
"Did she know my mother?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Judith's voice became quiet.
"Eleanor was your mother's closest friend."
Lauren stopped breathing.
"My mother knew her?"
"Very well."
"Then why have I never heard her name?"
"Because after your birth, Eleanor disappeared."
"Why?"
Judith looked at her.
"Because she was blamed for your father's death."
Lauren stared.
"My father was murdered?"
Judith nodded.
"Not exactly."
"What does that mean?"
"He was killed because of the trust."
Lauren's hands tightened around the letters.
"Who killed him?"
Judith didn't answer.
Lauren's voice became harder.
"Who?"
Judith whispered:
"Eleanor."
Silence filled the room.
Lauren shook her head.
"No."
"I saw it."
"You saw Eleanor kill my father?"
Judith nodded.
"But she didn't intend to."
Lauren frowned.
"What happened?"
Judith looked down.
"Your father confronted Eleanor about the forged trust."
"And?"
"They argued."
"Then?"
"Eleanor pulled a gun."
Lauren's face went pale.
"Why?"
"Because she believed your father had betrayed your mother."
"What did he do?"
"He had discovered that Charles was your biological father."
Lauren froze.
"He knew?"
"Yes."
"And Eleanor knew?"
"Everyone involved knew."
Lauren looked at the letters.
"Then why did Eleanor blame him?"
"Because she believed he had stolen you from your real father."
Lauren swallowed.
"What happened next?"
Judith's eyes filled with tears.
"Your father reached for the gun."
"And Eleanor shot him?"
"No."
Judith shook her head.
"He fell."
"Fell?"
"Backward."
"Where?"
"Down the staircase."
Lauren closed her eyes.
"So it was an accident."
Judith nodded.
"But Eleanor ran."
"Why?"
"Because she was afraid nobody would believe her."
Lauren looked at the photograph.
"And you?"
"I lied."
"About what?"
"I told the police Eleanor murdered him."
Lauren stared.
"You destroyed her life."
Judith nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Eleanor knew the truth."
"What truth?"
Judith whispered:
"That I had forged the documents."
Lauren stood.
"So you blamed an innocent woman."
"I was protecting my son."
"Which son?"
Judith looked at her.
"Graham."
Lauren froze.
"Why would Graham matter?"
"Because Eleanor discovered that Graham had signed the fraudulent amendment."
"But he was nineteen."
"I know."
"Then why?"
Judith's voice cracked.
"Because I needed someone with the Whitmore name."
Lauren understood.
"You used your own son."
Judith nodded.
"Yes."
Graham had been standing outside the room.
He had heard everything.
He walked inside.
"Why?"
Judith looked up.
Her son stood in the doorway.
"Why did you do this to me?"
Judith couldn't answer.
"You told me I signed a legitimate family document."
"I was protecting you."
"You forged my signature."
"I had no choice."
"You made me part of a crime."
Judith began crying.
"I was trying to save you."
Graham laughed bitterly.
"You were trying to save yourself."
Judith lowered her head.
"Yes."
The admission destroyed whatever remained between them.
Graham looked at Lauren.
"I never knew."
Lauren nodded.
"I believe you."
His eyes filled with tears.
"That doesn't make it better."
"No."
Lauren looked at Judith.
"It doesn't."
Judith stood.
"I need you to understand something."
Lauren didn't respond.
"I didn't start this."
"Then who did?"
"Eleanor."
Lauren frowned.
"Why?"
"Because she believed your biological family deserved the empire."
"And did they?"
Judith hesitated.
"Legally?"
"Yes."
"Yes."
Lauren stared at her.
"Then why did you fight it?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of losing money?"
"Of losing Graham."
Lauren shook her head.
"You could have told the truth."
"I thought if the trust transferred to Charles, Graham would be destroyed."
"Why?"
"Because Charles hated your father."
Lauren frowned.
"Charles didn't hate him."
"He did."
"Why?"
Judith's expression changed.
"Because your father knew Charles was not the only person who could claim the Voss inheritance."
Lauren froze.
"What does that mean?"
Judith looked at her.
"It means Charles wasn't your biological father's only heir."
Lauren's blood went cold.
"Who else?"
Judith whispered:
"His sister."
"Who?"
"Eleanor."
Lauren stared.
"Eleanor was a Voss?"
Judith nodded.
"Charles's sister."
"But her last name was Bell."
"She changed it when she married."
Lauren's mind raced.
Rachel Bell.
Eleanor.
Charles.
The family tree suddenly rearranged itself.
"Wait."
She looked at Judith.
"Rachel Bell wasn't Eleanor?"
"No."
"Then who was Rachel?"
Judith looked down.
"Rachel was Eleanor's daughter."
Lauren stopped breathing.
"The child in the photographs."
Judith nodded.
"Yes."
"Then where is Rachel now?"
Judith hesitated.
Lauren knew immediately.
"She's alive."
"Yes."
"Where?"
"Canada."
Lauren stared.
The mystery was finally becoming a family tree.
But one question remained.
"Why did Rachel investigate my birth?"
Judith answered:
"Because Eleanor told her to find you."
Lauren's voice softened.
"Why?"
"Because Eleanor believed you were the rightful heir."
Graham stepped closer.
"What about Sophie?"
Judith looked at him.
"That's why everyone is afraid."
Lauren tightened her grip on the baby monitor.
"What does Sophie have to do with this?"
Judith whispered:
"The trust contains a succession clause."
"Explain."
"If Lauren dies before Sophie reaches adulthood, control passes to a designated guardian."
Lauren's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Judith didn't answer.
Lauren's voice became cold.
"Who?"
Judith looked directly at Graham.
"You."
Graham froze.
"What?"
"Your father named you."
Lauren stared.
"Why?"
"Because he believed you were the only person who could protect Lauren's child."
Graham's face collapsed.
"I didn't know."
"Of course you didn't."
Judith looked at her son.
"That was the point."
Lauren understood.
The custody battle wasn't just about Sophie.
If Graham obtained custody, he would control the heir.
And whoever controlled Graham could control the trust.
Lauren looked at Judith.
"That's why you wanted me declared unstable."
Judith nodded.
"Yes."
"So you could control Sophie."
"Yes."
"Through Graham."
"Yes."
Lauren stepped backward.
The betrayal suddenly became larger than money.
Her own mother-in-law had tried to turn her son into a weapon against her.
Graham looked horrified.
"Mother..."
Judith began crying.
"I didn't know how else to save us."
"You almost destroyed my marriage."
"I know."
"You tried to take my daughter."
"I know."
"You turned me into the person who hurt Lauren."
Judith whispered:
"I know."
Graham shook his head.
"You didn't protect me."
He looked at Lauren.
"You used me."
Judith covered her face.
"Yes."
Then the front door opened.
Daniel walked into the dining room.
"We have a problem."
Lauren turned.
"What now?"
He held up his phone.
"Rachel Bell is missing."
Lauren froze.
"What?"
"She was under protection in Toronto."
"Who took her?"
"We don't know."
Charles entered behind him.
His expression was grim.
"I do."
Everyone looked at him.
Charles continued:
"Arthur."
"But he's in custody."
Charles shook his head.
"Arthur isn't the only one."
Lauren frowned.
"Who else?"
Charles looked at Judith.
Judith's face went pale.
"She."
Lauren stared.
"Who?"
Charles answered:
"Eleanor."
Lauren felt a chill.
"She's alive?"
Judith nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Where?"
Charles looked at the photograph.
"She's been closer than you think."
Lauren's heart pounded.
"How close?"
Charles looked at Graham.
"Very."
Graham's phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then his expression changed.
"What?"
Lauren watched him.
He lowered the phone.
"That was the hospital."
Her stomach tightened.
"What happened?"
"Sophie."
Lauren rushed forward.
"What about her?"
"The nanny says someone tried to enter the nursery."
Lauren's blood ran cold.
"Is she safe?"
"Yes."
"Who was it?"
The answer came from Daniel.
"Someone using Judith's security code."
Everyone looked at Judith.
She shook her head.
"I didn't give anyone permission."
Lauren stared at her.
"Then someone has your code."
Judith whispered:
"Only one person."
"Who?"
She looked at Charles.
"Her."
Lauren's heart stopped.
"Eleanor."
Daniel pulled up the security footage.
A woman wearing a dark coat entered the estate.
Her face was hidden.
But she walked with confidence.
She knew every camera.
Every blind spot.
Every door.
She went directly toward the nursery.
Then stopped.
She turned toward the camera.
For one second, her face was visible.
Lauren stared at the screen.
She didn't know the woman.
But Judith did.
Judith whispered:
"Eleanor."
Lauren looked at her.
"Why would she come for Sophie?"
Judith shook her head.
"She's not trying to hurt her."
"Then what?"
"She's trying to protect her."
Lauren frowned.
"From whom?"
Judith looked toward the hallway.
"From Arthur."
Charles interrupted.
"Arthur isn't the real threat."
Everyone turned.
Charles continued:
"Arthur has always been working for someone."
Lauren's heart sank.
"Who?"
Charles looked at Judith.
Judith whispered:
"Your mother."
Lauren froze.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
Judith's voice broke.
"Your mother isn't dead."
The room became silent.
Lauren stared at her.
"My mother died when I was a child."
Judith shook her head.
"That is what we told you."
Lauren's face went white.
"What did you do?"
Judith closed her eyes.
"We hid her."
"Where?"
Judith looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
"She's the woman who has been trying to protect you."
Lauren couldn't breathe.
"Rachel?"
"No."
"Eleanor?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Judith looked directly at her.
"Your mother."
Lauren's knees nearly gave out.
Charles stepped forward.
"Judith."
But Judith continued.
"Your mother is alive."
Lauren stared at her.
"Where?"
Judith swallowed.
"She has been living under another name for twenty-five years."
"Why?"
"Because your father was never the person you thought he was."
Lauren shook her head.
"Then who was he?"
Judith looked at Charles.
Then at Graham.
Then finally at Lauren.
"The man you called your father wasn't protecting you from the Whitmores."
She paused.
"He was protecting the Whitmores from your mother."
Lauren stood frozen.
And somewhere outside the mansion, a car engine started.
Someone was leaving.
Daniel looked at the security monitor.
"There's a vehicle at the rear gate."
Lauren turned.
"Who?"
Daniel zoomed in.
A woman sat behind the wheel.
Before the gate opened, she looked directly toward the camera.
Lauren saw her face.
She didn't recognize her.
But her heart did.
Something inside her broke open.
She whispered:
"Mom?"
The vehicle disappeared into the darkness.
And for the first time in her life, Lauren realized the woman she had spent decades mourning might have been alive all along.
Not dead.
Not gone.
Hiding.
Waiting.
Watching.
May you like
And possibly carrying the final piece of the truth that could destroy the Whitmore empire forever.
To be continued.
