CHAPTER 2: THE SIRENS

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"What did you just say?"

"I said," she repeated, forcing herself to breathe through the pain, "I want him removed from my apartment."

Gloria scoffed.

"Your apartment? Stop lying."

She reached for the phone, but her daughter-in-law pulled it away.

Within minutes, the distant sound of sirens echoed through the neighborhood.

No one spoke.

Daniel paced across the dining room.

"They're not going to believe you," he muttered. "You probably fell."

His wife looked at the security camera mounted above the living room entrance.

"I guess we'll find out."

Fifteen minutes later, two police officers and a paramedic entered the apartment.

One officer immediately noticed the swelling on her face and the way she struggled to stand.

The paramedic gently examined her side.

"I believe she may have fractured ribs," he said. "She needs to go to the hospital."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Officer, this is all a misunderstanding."

Before he could continue, the second officer pointed toward the camera.

"Does your security system record video and audio?"

Daniel hesitated.

"...Yes."

For the first time that evening, real fear crossed his face.
