Chapter 11 — The Secret Behind Victor Vale

Chapter 11 — The Secret Behind Victor Vale
For fourteen years, I believed my father was the man who had protected me.
I believed he had built the Vale empire through hard work.
I believed he had loved my mother.
I believed he had buried her because losing her had broken him.
Now I wasn't sure I believed anything.
The photograph Julian had sent me remained open on my phone.
My mother.
Andrew.
Fourteen years ago.
The date was written clearly in the corner.
The night before my mother supposedly died.
I stared at Andrew's younger face.
He looked terrified.
My mother looked determined.
And behind them stood my father.
Victor Vale.
Alive.
Watching.
At 12:07 a.m., I called my father.
He answered immediately.
“Mariana.”
“You're awake.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
A long silence.
“I knew this night would come.”
My heart tightened.
“What night?”
“The night you discovered the truth.”
I closed my eyes.
“Then tell me.”
“I can't.”
“You've lied to me for fourteen years.”
“I was protecting you.”
“Everyone says that.”
“Because it's true.”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“Protecting someone doesn't mean destroying their understanding of their own life.”
He said nothing.
“Was Andrew there the night Mother disappeared?”
Silence.
“Dad.”
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“He was helping her.”
“Helping her do what?”
“Escape.”
“From Julian?”
“Yes.”
“Then why does Julian say you stole something from him?”
My father went silent.
I knew.
There was something else.
“Dad.”
“What?”
“What did you steal?”
His breathing changed.
“The company.”
I frowned.
“What company?”
“The original company.”
I waited.
“Before Vale International existed…”
His voice became quieter.
“…there was Cross-Vale Holdings.”
I froze.
“Cross-Vale?”
“Your grandfather and Julian's father built it together.”
“And you?”
“I took control after they died.”
“How?”
My father hesitated.
“I made a deal.”
“With Julian?”
“With his father.”
“Was he alive?”
“No.”
“Then with whom?”
My father whispered:
“Your mother.”
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
My father told me everything.
Or at least, he claimed to.
Twenty-five years earlier, my mother had inherited a minority stake in Cross-Vale Holdings.
Julian's father controlled the majority.
When he died unexpectedly, the company should have passed to Julian.
Instead, my mother challenged the succession.
She claimed there had been financial fraud.
She won.
But she didn't take the company.
She gave control to my father.
“Why?”
“Because she trusted me.”
“And Julian?”
“He never forgave her.”
I stared at the photograph.
“Then why did Julian say you stole the company?”
“Because from his perspective, I did.”
“Did you?”
My father was silent.
“Dad.”
“I made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“I changed the ownership structure.”
“To give yourself control.”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
“So Julian was right.”
“Not entirely.”
“Enough.”
He sighed.
“I thought I could protect the company.”
“You destroyed your partnership with my mother.”
“Yes.”
“Then she discovered what you did.”
“Yes.”
“What did she do?”
“She threatened to expose me.”
I felt sick.
“That's why she disappeared.”
“She left willingly.”
“Did she?”
“Yes.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I helped her escape.”
“Then why did everyone think she was dead?”
“Because Julian was searching for her.”
I shook my head.
“That's not enough.”
“There was another reason.”
“What?”
My father hesitated.
“Because of you.”
I stopped breathing.
“Me?”
“Your mother discovered something about you.”
“What?”
“She found out you weren't…”
He stopped.
“Dad?”
Silence.
“You weren't my biological daughter.”
I stared at the wall.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“That's impossible.”
“I am your father.”
“Then why did you say—”
“I raised you.”
My mind raced.
“Who is my biological father?”
My father didn't answer.
I already knew the answer.
“Julian.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
He whispered:
“Andrew's father.”
I froze.
“Richard Escalante?”
“Yes.”
I couldn't breathe.
My father continued.
“Your mother had a relationship with Richard before she married me.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“She became pregnant.”
“No.”
“Your mother gave birth to you.”
“No.”
“You were taken from the hospital.”
I stared at him.
“By whom?”
He whispered:
“Me.”
I couldn't speak.
My father had taken me.
From my mother.
From my biological father.
And raised me as his own.
“Why?”
“Because Richard was dangerous.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“He was involved with Julian.”
“And Mother?”
“She wanted you back.”
“Did you let her?”
“No.”
The word cut through me.
“You kept me from my mother.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“Again.”
He lowered his head.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That if you returned to her, Julian would find you.”
“So you stole me.”
“I saved you.”
“You stole me.”
He didn't argue.
For the first time, my father looked like an old man.
Not the billionaire.
Not the CEO.
Not the man whose name was printed on buildings.
Just an exhausted father who had finally run out of lies.
I went to the family archive.
I found my birth records.
The original document had been sealed.
I broke the seal.
My name.
My mother's name.
Then the father's name.
Richard Escalante.
I stared at it.
Andrew's father.
My husband's father.
My blood father.
The room seemed to spin.
I sat down.
That meant Andrew and I weren't merely connected by marriage.
We were connected by blood.
And suddenly the pressure for an heir made sense.
Julian's obsession.
Margaret's insistence.
Andrew's behavior.
Everyone had been afraid of one thing.
A child.
Because a child born from me and Andrew would have combined two bloodlines.
The Vale inheritance.
The Escalante inheritance.
And perhaps something else.
Something hidden in the original trust.
I opened the document.
There it was.
In the event of a union between descendants of the Vale and Escalante bloodlines, all disputed Cross-Vale assets shall revert to the biological heir.
I stared at the clause.
My hands went numb.
The entire marriage had been designed around this.
Not love.
Not family.
Inheritance.
Control.
A child would have become the legal key to an empire.
At 3:20 a.m., I called Brenda.
She answered on the first ring.
“You know.”
“Yes.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“About Richard.”
“Yes.”
“About me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Julian?”
“Yes.”
“Where is my mother?”
Brenda was silent.
“Brenda.”
“She isn't with Julian.”
“Then where?”
“She went back to the original estate.”
“What estate?”
“The Cross-Vale estate.”
“Where?”
“Montrose.”
I knew the place.
It had been abandoned for decades.
“Why would she go there?”
“Because that's where everything started.”
At dawn, we drove to Montrose.
My father came with us.
He didn't speak.
Neither did I.
The estate was surrounded by dead trees and rusted gates.
The house itself looked abandoned.
But the front door was unlocked.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Then I saw the photographs.
My mother.
Richard Escalante.
My father.
Julian.
All together.
Young.
Smiling.
It looked like a family.
Except it wasn't.
It was a conspiracy.
We entered the library.
My father stopped.
“This is where your mother kept the records.”
“What records?”
“The original Cross-Vale agreements.”
I looked around.
“Where?”
He pointed toward the fireplace.
“There.”
I removed a loose stone.
A metal box was hidden behind it.
Inside were contracts.
Letters.
Photographs.
And one cassette tape.
I looked at my father.
“What's this?”
He didn't answer.
I found an old player.
Pressed the button.
My mother's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, Victor failed.”
My father closed his eyes.
Her voice continued.
“I know he believes he protected Mariana.”
A pause.
“He did not.”
My hands trembled.
“He protected himself.”
My father whispered:
“No.”
The recording continued.
“Mariana was taken from me because Victor discovered who her biological father was.”
I stared at my father.
“He feared Richard.”
My mother continued.
“He feared Julian.”
Then:
“And most of all, he feared what Mariana would inherit.”
I stopped breathing.
The recording crackled.
“Mariana, if you ever hear this…”
Her voice softened.
“I am sorry.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“I never abandoned you.”
The recording continued.
“I left because I had no choice.”
Then the final sentence:
“Your father is not the man who raised you.”
The tape stopped.
Silence.
My father sat down.
I turned toward him.
“You knew.”
He nodded.
“You knew all along.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your mother made me promise.”
I shook my head.
“She didn't make you.”
“No.”
“You chose.”
“Yes.”
“You chose to lie.”
“Yes.”
I looked at the floor.
Then I noticed another document.
A birth certificate.
Not mine.
Someone else's.
A child born on the same day.
Same hospital.
Same mother.
Different father.
AMELIA CROSS.
I stared.
Amelia wasn't simply my sister.
She was Julian's daughter.
My mother had given birth to two children.
One belonged to Richard.
One belonged to Julian.
Twins.
I looked at my father.
He whispered:
“Your mother had twins.”
My mind went blank.
“One was you.”
“Yes.”
“The other was Amelia.”
“Yes.”
“And Julian took her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she was his biological child.”
I understood.
Julian hadn't spent fourteen years searching for Amelia because he wanted revenge.
He wanted his daughter.
But that still didn't explain everything.
I picked up the final document.
It was a trust amendment.
Signed by my mother.
The beneficiary was:
MARIANA AND AMELIA — JOINT SUCCESSORS
I stared.
“What is this?”
My father didn't answer.
“The entire Cross-Vale empire…”
I looked at him.
“…belongs to both of us.”
He nodded.
“And Julian knows.”
“Yes.”
“So he doesn't want to destroy me.”
My father looked at me.
“He wants you to give him Amelia.”
I felt sick.
“No.”
“He believes she is the key.”
“To what?”
My father hesitated.
“The original ownership.”
Then we heard footsteps.
Someone was inside the house.
My father stood.
“Stay behind me.”
The library door opened.
Brenda entered.
Her face was pale.
“It's not Julian.”
I stared at her.
“Then who?”
She looked at my father.
“You need to come with me.”
“Why?”
“Because Andrew is alive.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Here.”
I stood.
“Where is he?”
“Downstairs.”
“Why?”
Brenda's eyes filled with fear.
“Because he knows who Julian really is.”
I followed her down the stairs.
A basement door opened.
Andrew sat inside.
Bruised.
Blood on his shirt.
But alive.
He looked at me.
“I told you everything I knew.”
I stared at him.
“Not everything.”
He shook his head.
“I didn't know.”
“Know what?”
He looked at my father.
Then Brenda.
Then me.
His voice was barely audible.
“Julian isn't the person behind all of this.”
My heart tightened.
“Then who is?”
Andrew looked at my father.
“Your father.”
Silence.
I turned toward Victor.
He didn't deny it.
I couldn't breathe.
My father had lied about my mother.
He had stolen me.
He had hidden my sister.
He had controlled the company.
He had manipulated Andrew.
But even that wasn't the worst part.
Because Andrew whispered the final truth.
“Victor didn't protect you from Julian.”
He looked at me.
“He protected Julian from you.”
I stared at my father.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I was afraid of the man who had raised me.
