Chapter 13 — Andrew's Last Chance

Chapter 13 — Andrew's Last Chance

The heavy doors of Courtroom Seven opened without warning.

Six FBI agents entered in dark suits, moving with calm precision.

Their eyes scanned the gallery.

The spectators sensed something was wrong before a single word was spoken.

Judge Eleanor Whitmore set down her gavel.

"Special Agent Collins?"

Rebecca Collins rose slowly.

"Your Honor, pursuant to a federal warrant, we are taking one individual into custody."

The room fell silent.

Every head turned, searching for the target.

Andrew instinctively looked toward Brenda.

Then Helen Brooks.

Then Margaret.

None of them moved.

Instead, the lead agent walked past every defendant.

Past the witness stand.

Past the jury box.

He stopped beside the prosecution's evidence technician.

A young man named Ethan Cole.

The quiet forensic specialist who had spent the entire trial operating the courtroom monitors.

The man no one had noticed.

The agent spoke calmly.

"Mr. Cole."

The young man's fingers froze above the keyboard.

"You are under arrest for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, destruction of federal evidence, and aiding Jonathan Mercer."

Gasps echoed through the courtroom.

Ethan slowly stood.

He didn't run.

He didn't argue.

He simply smiled.

"You figured it out."

Mariana stared in disbelief.

"He worked for the prosecution."

Special Agent Collins nodded.

"He also worked for Mercer."

As agents handcuffed Ethan, another investigator disconnected the courtroom computer.

Daniel Cruz entered carrying a sealed evidence case.

"We found this in his equipment."

Inside were hidden storage drives.

Encrypted transmitters.

A satellite communication device.

Ethan had been feeding information outside the courthouse throughout the trial.

Judge Whitmore looked visibly disturbed.

"For how long?"

Daniel answered.

"Since jury selection."

Andrew felt sick.

Every hearing.

Every witness.

Every piece of evidence.

Someone had been reporting everything directly to Jonathan Mercer.

Collins approached Ethan.

"Where is Mercer?"

Ethan laughed.

"You still think you're chasing him."

"No."

Collins replied.

"I think we're catching him."

Ethan's smile faded slightly.

Meanwhile...

Three hundred miles away...

A black helicopter landed on the roof of an abandoned shipping warehouse near the Pacific coast.

Jonathan Mercer stepped onto the concrete roof carrying a single leather briefcase.

He looked at his watch.

His pilot approached.

"We should leave."

Jonathan smiled.

"Not yet."

He looked toward the city skyline in the distance.

"There is one final loose end."

Back in court...

Judge Whitmore ordered a recess while Ethan was escorted away.

The courthouse erupted into chaos.

News alerts spread across every major network within minutes.

Federal Mole Arrested Inside Courtroom.

Andrew stood alone in the nearly empty hallway.

His attorney approached quietly.

"You've been requested upstairs."

"Who by?"

"Mariana."

Andrew blinked.

"She wants to see me?"

"Yes."

Minutes later...

Andrew entered a private mediation room.

Mariana stood by the window overlooking the courthouse plaza.

Neither spoke immediately.

Four years of marriage.

Months of betrayal.

Days of public humiliation.

Everything stood silently between them.

Andrew broke the silence.

"You wanted to see me."

She nodded.

"I did."

He waited.

She turned to face him.

"You still have one chance."

He frowned.

"One chance for what?"

"To do the right thing."

Andrew laughed bitterly.

"I've been doing everything wrong."

"I know."

She didn't say it cruelly.

Only honestly.

She handed him a folder.

"What is this?"

"The Harper Foundation."

He looked confused.

"I don't understand."

"You never read the incorporation papers."

He opened the folder.

His eyes widened.

The foundation had been created four years earlier.

Its purpose surprised him.

Scholarships.

Domestic violence shelters.

Medical research grants.

Emergency relief funds.

Everything funded quietly through Mariana's private investments.

But one line caught his attention.

Successor Chairperson: Andrew Harper

He stared at her.

"You named me?"

"I believed you'd become the man I married."

Andrew couldn't speak.

Mariana continued softly.

"I spent years believing people could grow."

She smiled sadly.

"Maybe I expected too much."

He looked at the foundation documents again.

"You trusted me."

"Yes."

"And I betrayed you."

"Yes."

Silence.

Then Andrew whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Mariana nodded.

"I know."

It wasn't forgiveness.

But it was acknowledgment.

Andrew slowly closed the folder.

"What do you need me to do?"

She met his eyes.

"Tell the whole truth."

"About Brenda?"

"Everything."

"My mother."

"Everything."

"My company."

"Everything."

He looked down.

"And if the truth destroys the Harper name?"

Mariana answered without hesitation.

"Then let the lies die with it."

Across the courthouse...

Margaret sat alone in a witness room.

Thomas Gallagher quietly entered.

She smiled weakly.

"I suppose you warned Alejandro about me."

Thomas nodded.

"I did."

She looked away.

"Did he hate me?"

Thomas smiled gently.

"No."

She looked surprised.

"He pitied you."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"That's somehow worse."

Thomas sat beside her.

"He said something I'll never forget."

Margaret waited.

"He told me..."

'People rarely destroy others because they're evil.'

'They destroy others because they spend too long protecting the wrong version of themselves.'

Tears rolled down Margaret's face.

Meanwhile...

Victor rushed into the mediation room.

"We've located Mercer."

Mariana looked up immediately.

"Where?"

Victor hesitated.

"He isn't running."

"What?"

"He's waiting."

Andrew frowned.

"For what?"

Victor looked directly at him.

"For you."

Andrew's heartbeat quickened.

"Me?"

Victor handed him a recovered encrypted message from Ethan's devices.

The final instruction Jonathan Mercer had sent before the arrest.

It contained only one sentence.

Bring Andrew Harper alive. He still belongs to us.

Andrew's face drained of color.

"I've never worked for him."

Victor nodded.

"No."

Mariana slowly realized the truth.

"You were never the target."

Andrew looked at her.

"Then who was?"

Mariana whispered,

"I was."

Victor finished the thought.

"You were simply the bridge Mercer intended to use to reach the Escalante family."

Andrew suddenly remembered something.

A conversation years earlier.

Leonard Graves.

A charity gala.

A strange comment he had dismissed.

"Some marriages are investments."

At the time...

He had laughed.

Now...

He understood.

His entire relationship with Brenda...

The constant manipulation...

The financial advice...

The social introductions...

None of it had been accidental.

Someone had patiently pushed every piece into place.

Andrew looked at Mariana.

"For four years..."

"I unknowingly helped destroy your family."

She shook her head.

"No."

"You were manipulated."

"I still made the choices."

"Yes."

She didn't deny it.

"But now..."

She stepped closer.

"You still have one choice left."

Andrew looked toward the courthouse windows.

In the distance, helicopters circled above the city.

Federal agents were already moving.

The final confrontation had begun.

He took a slow breath.

Then looked at Victor.

"Take me to Mercer."

Victor frowned.

"That's not your decision."

Andrew's voice became steady for the first time in days.

"It is if I'm the only bait he'll come for."

At that same moment...

Inside the abandoned waterfront warehouse...

Jonathan Mercer watched a live news broadcast.

He smiled calmly.

"Andrew finally understands."

He closed the laptop.

Then looked toward Leonard Graves, who stood nearby.

"It's time."

Leonard nodded.

"What about the girl?"

Jonathan looked toward a locked steel door at the back of the warehouse.

Behind it...

Someone pounded desperately from the inside.

Jonathan smiled.

May you like

"She'll bring Mariana exactly where we want her."
