Chapter 9 — Brenda's Darkest Secret

Chapter 9 — Brenda's Darkest Secret
The interrogation room was silent except for the steady hum of the fluorescent lights.
Brenda Lawson sat alone, her wrists uncuffed but resting tensely on the steel table. Her crimson dress had been replaced by a gray detention uniform. Without designer makeup and expensive jewelry, she looked older than she had only two days earlier.
Detective Laura Bennett entered carrying a thick evidence box.
She set it on the table.
Brenda forced a confident smile.
"My attorney told me not to answer any questions."
Laura nodded.
"That's your right."
She sat down.
"I'm not here to question you."
Brenda frowned.
"Then why are you here?"
Laura slowly opened the box.
"I'm here to show you what we already know."
One by one, photographs covered the table.
The security footage of the emerald necklace.
Bank transfers from offshore accounts.
Hotel surveillance stills.
Phone records.
Copies of forged passports.
Every carefully hidden piece of Brenda's life.
Laura watched her expression.
For the first time...
Brenda stopped pretending to be surprised.
"You've worked hard."
Brenda said quietly.
Laura answered,
"So have you."
She slid forward another photograph.
It showed Brenda—under the name Rebecca Collins—standing beside an elderly millionaire in Miami nine years earlier.
Another photo.
Rebecca Hart.
A charity gala in Chicago.
Another.
Sophia Lane.
A luxury resort in Monaco.
Different names.
Different identities.
Always the same woman.
Always the same smile.
Laura folded her hands.
"You've reinvented yourself four times."
Brenda looked away.
"Five."
Laura raised an eyebrow.
"So you admit it?"
Brenda gave a tired laugh.
"Does it matter anymore?"
Across town...
Mariana arrived at St. Gabriel Children's Hospital carrying a box of books.
The pediatric oncology ward had been one of her favorite charities for years.
The children didn't know she was a billionaire.
They only knew she always remembered birthdays.
A little girl with no hair from chemotherapy smiled brightly.
"Miss Mariana!"
Mariana hugged her gently.
"I brought the next adventure book."
The child grinned.
"You always keep your promises."
Mariana smiled.
"I try."
Victor watched quietly from the doorway.
He had spent years seeing Mariana negotiate billion-dollar contracts.
Yet somehow...
She always looked happiest sitting on the floor reading stories to children.
Meanwhile...
Andrew sat alone in his now-empty executive office.
Cardboard boxes surrounded him.
Family photographs.
Awards.
Corporate trophies.
The framed magazine cover calling him Business Leader of the Year.
He stared at it for a long time.
Then quietly removed the photograph from the frame.
Behind it...
He found a handwritten note.
Mariana's handwriting.
"I'm proud of you."
No signature.
Just four words.
Andrew closed his eyes.
He remembered the night she'd slipped that magazine onto the kitchen table.
She had looked happier than he had.
He had barely thanked her.
At police headquarters...
Laura continued placing evidence before Brenda.
"Let's talk about Leonard Graves."
Brenda remained silent.
"You met him seven years ago."
Silence.
"You accepted payments."
Silence.
"You targeted wealthy executives."
Brenda finally looked up.
"I never killed anyone."
Laura frowned.
"I didn't say you did."
"I know what you're trying to make me."
"No."
Laura answered calmly.
"I'm trying to understand why."
Brenda laughed bitterly.
"You think I woke up one morning wanting to destroy people?"
She leaned back.
"You know nothing about me."
"Then tell me."
For several moments...
Brenda said nothing.
Then she spoke so quietly Laura almost missed it.
"I grew up in foster care."
Laura listened without interrupting.
"My father disappeared before I was born."
"My mother overdosed when I was nine."
"I learned early..."
"...pretty girls survive differently."
Flashback...
Seventeen years earlier...
Rebecca Collins stood outside a diner wearing a borrowed dress.
She was nineteen.
Alone.
Hungry.
A wealthy businessman smiled at her across the parking lot.
He offered dinner.
Then gifts.
Then promises.
Three months later...
He disappeared.
Leaving her with unpaid rent and shattered illusions.
That night...
She made herself a promise.
Never again would she be the one abandoned.
Present Day...
"I stopped believing in love."
Brenda whispered.
"I started believing in leverage."
Laura nodded slowly.
"And Leonard Graves?"
"He offered opportunity."
"For what?"
"Finding weaknesses."
She laughed softly.
"Every rich family has them."
"Affairs."
"Secrets."
"Addictions."
"Pride."
Laura asked,
"And Andrew?"
Brenda hesitated.
"He wasn't supposed to matter."
Across the city...
Margaret Harper sat alone in the mansion library.
She held the faded photograph of four young friends.
Alejandro.
Sofia.
Richard.
Herself.
Tears slipped silently down her face.
She whispered to the empty room,
"I'm so sorry."
For the first time in decades...
No one heard her.
Back at headquarters...
Laura placed the final document before Brenda.
It wasn't a photograph.
It was an employment contract.
Brenda frowned.
"What is this?"
"The agreement Leonard Graves signed."
She scanned the page.
Her expression slowly changed.
"This isn't possible."
Laura watched carefully.
"What isn't?"
Brenda looked up.
"He lied to me."
The contract listed every operative Blackstone Meridian had placed near rival corporations.
Each assignment had a code name.
Each operative received bonuses for completed objectives.
Brenda found her own.
Operation Orchid
Objective:
Gain access to Harper Technologies through Andrew Harper.
Reward upon completion:
$5 million.
But another line caught her attention.
Status: Secondary Asset.
Brenda frowned.
"Secondary?"
Laura nodded.
"There was someone else."
Brenda's heartbeat quickened.
"No..."
Laura slowly slid one last file across the table.
"This person reported directly to Leonard."
Brenda opened it.
Her eyes widened.
She whispered,
"No..."
Laura leaned forward.
"You recognize the name."
Brenda slowly closed the file.
"I thought..."
Her voice trembled.
"I thought I was the only one."
Across town...
Victor rushed into Mariana's office.
"We've decrypted Leonard Graves' private server."
Mariana looked up.
"So?"
Victor placed several printed emails on her desk.
"They weren't spying only on Harper Technologies."
She read the first page.
Her expression darkened.
The second.
Then the third.
Every document mentioned Escalante Holdings.
Her family's company had been the true objective all along.
Andrew...
The marriage...
The affair...
Had simply been a path toward her.
Victor pointed to one email.
A single sentence had been highlighted.
"Primary source remains active inside Escalante Holdings."
Mariana slowly looked up.
"No."
Victor nodded grimly.
"We have a mole."
Meanwhile...
Brenda sat motionless.
Laura studied her carefully.
"If you help us..."
Brenda interrupted.
"It won't matter."
"Why?"
She looked toward the mirrored observation window.
"Because the person Leonard really trusted..."
"...is still free."
Laura exchanged a glance with Daniel Cruz.
Daniel stepped into the room.
He carried a sealed evidence envelope.
"We found this in Leonard's encrypted files."
He handed it to Brenda.
Inside...
Was a recent photograph.
Mariana entering Escalante Holdings.
Someone stood only a few steps behind her.
Smiling.
Holding the elevator door.
A trusted executive.
Someone Mariana greeted every morning.
Brenda's face drained of color.
She whispered,
"Oh, God..."
Laura immediately leaned forward.
"Who is it?"
Brenda closed her eyes.
When she finally answered...
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"The person who's been betraying Mariana..."
May you like
"...has been standing beside her every single day."
