Chapter 5: The Mistress Who Became the Enemy

Chapter 5: The Mistress Who Became the Enemy

Brenda Collins had always believed she understood power.

She believed power was expensive clothes.

Power was walking into a room and watching people turn their heads.

Power was sitting beside a successful man while everyone wondered how she earned her place.

For years, Brenda had studied powerful women.

She copied their style.

Their confidence.

Their behavior.

But she never understood the most important thing about real power.

Real power does not need to announce itself.

And that was why she never recognized Mariana.

The morning after Andrew lost control of Whitmore International, Brenda woke up expecting an apology.

She expected Andrew to arrive.

She expected him to tell her everything was under control.

She expected him to say:

"Don't worry. I will fix this."

Because that was the man she believed she knew.

Instead, her phone showed twenty-three missed calls.

Not from Andrew.

From reporters.

Brenda frowned.

She opened the first message.

"Is it true you were involved in the collapse of Whitmore International?"

Her expression changed.

The second message:

"Sources claim you were Andrew Whitmore's mistress during his marriage."

The third:

"Are you connected to the financial investigation?"

For the first time in years...

Brenda felt afraid.

She immediately called Andrew.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

"This can't be happening."

She threw the phone onto the bed.

Because Brenda had never considered the possibility that Andrew could lose.

To her...

Andrew Whitmore was not just a man.

He was a shield.

A doorway into a world she wanted.

She remembered the first time they met.

A charity event.

A crowded ballroom.

Andrew surrounded by investors and executives.

Everyone wanted his attention.

Everyone admired him.

Brenda approached him confidently.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

A compliment.

A smile.

A little mystery.

Within weeks, Andrew was fascinated.

He told her things he never told Mariana.

Or at least he thought he did.

"My wife doesn't understand me."

"She doesn't appreciate my ambition."

"She only cares about numbers."

Brenda believed every word.

Because she wanted to believe him.

She never asked one important question:

If Andrew could betray his wife...

Why would he never betray her?

By afternoon, Brenda arrived at the Whitmore mansion.

She expected Andrew to be there.

Instead, she found Margaret.

Margaret looked different.

The elegant confidence was gone.

The woman who once judged everyone now looked like someone waiting for judgment.

"Where is Andrew?"

Brenda asked.

Margaret looked at her coldly.

"Why?"

The tone surprised Brenda.

"I'm asking because I need to speak with him."

Margaret laughed.

A bitter laugh.

"You need him now?"

Brenda frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret stood.

"It means you were very confident when you thought he was powerful."

A pause.

"Now you look nervous."

Brenda's face hardened.

"Don't speak to me like that."

Margaret smiled.

"Why?"

"Because you think you're better than me?"

The words hit Brenda.

Because they sounded familiar.

They were the same words Margaret used against Mariana.

"You always thought you won."

Margaret walked closer.

"You thought you replaced her."

Brenda said nothing.

"But you didn't replace Mariana."

Margaret's voice became colder.

"You only stepped into a position she was already leaving."

For the first time, Brenda felt something she hated.

Doubt.

That evening, Brenda finally reached Andrew.

He answered.

His voice was exhausted.

"Where have you been?"

Brenda immediately attacked.

"What is happening?"

A silence.

Then Andrew said:

"You knew."

Brenda froze.

"Knew what?"

"That something was wrong."

"I didn't know."

"You knew Mariana was different."

Brenda became defensive.

"Andrew, don't do this."

"Do what?"

"Blame me."

A long silence followed.

Then Andrew said something that terrified her.

"You were right."

"What?"

"Mariana was never ordinary."

Brenda's heart dropped.

"Who is she?"

Andrew laughed quietly.

"The person who owned everything."

The line went silent.

For several seconds, Brenda couldn't speak.

Then she whispered:

"That's impossible."

Andrew answered:

"I said the same thing."

The next morning, Brenda received an invitation.

Not from Andrew.

From Mariana.

A private meeting.

Escalante headquarters.

Brenda almost refused.

Almost.

But curiosity won.

When she arrived, she immediately felt the difference.

The building was not like Whitmore headquarters.

There were no people trying to impress someone.

No unnecessary luxury.

No atmosphere of fear.

Everyone moved with purpose.

Then the elevator doors opened.

Mariana stood there.

Calm.

Elegant.

Powerful.

Brenda expected anger.

She expected revenge.

Instead...

Mariana simply said:

"Thank you for coming."

That surprised Brenda.

"Why did you call me?"

Mariana walked into the conference room.

"Because I need information."

Brenda laughed.

"From me?"

"Yes."

"Why would I help you?"

Mariana looked at her.

"Because Andrew will eventually sacrifice you."

Brenda's expression changed.

"That's not true."

Mariana placed a file on the table.

Inside were documents.

Private messages.

Financial transfers.

Brenda looked at them.

Her face slowly lost color.

"What is this?"

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"That Andrew planned to distance himself from you if the marriage ended."

Brenda shook her head.

"No."

"Yes."

Mariana's voice remained calm.

"He never planned a future with you."

The truth hurt because Brenda already knew it.

Deep down.

She had always known.

"Why are you showing me this?"

Mariana looked at her.

"Because unlike Andrew, I don't need to use people to win."

That sentence stayed with Brenda.

Because for the first time...

She saw the difference between them.

Andrew needed people beneath him.

Mariana built people beside her.

Before Brenda left, Mariana said:

"One question."

Brenda stopped.

"Did Andrew ever tell you why he was able to survive his business failures?"

Brenda shook her head.

"No."

Mariana smiled sadly.

"Because I did."

Brenda walked out.

But she was not the same woman who entered.

That night, she made a decision.

Not because she suddenly became good.

Not because she forgave Mariana.

Because she finally understood something.

She had spent years chasing Andrew's power.

But Andrew never had power.

He only had borrowed power.

And now the person who truly owned that power wanted the truth.

Meanwhile, Andrew sat alone inside the mansion.

His phone displayed the latest message.

From Brenda.

Only five words:

"We need to talk, Andrew."

For the first time, Andrew felt something worse than losing money.

He felt everyone he manipulated slowly turning against him.

His wife.

His investors.

His executives.

And now...

His mistress.

The woman who helped him destroy his marriage...

May you like

Was becoming the person who could destroy him.
