Chapter 1: The Empire Falls Before Breakfast

Chapter 1: The Empire Falls Before Breakfast

The black SUV sliced through the empty streets, its tinted windows shielding Mariana from the storm she had left behind.

She never cried.

Not when Andrew slapped her.

Not when Margaret called her a thief.

Not even when four years of marriage collapsed in a single evening.

Instead, she stared calmly at the glowing skyline until the vehicle entered the underground garage of Escalante Global Holdings.

The elevator doors opened before she reached them.

Inside the executive boardroom, twelve senior executives stood the moment she entered.

At the head of the table waited an elderly man with silver hair and piercing eyes.

Eduardo Escalante.

Her father.

Founder of one of the largest investment groups in the world.

He looked at the faint bruise on her face.

His jaw tightened.

"Who touched my daughter?"

Mariana placed her handbag on the conference table.

"Andrew."

Silence.

No one breathed.

Eduardo slowly removed his glasses.

"I warned him."

"I warned every one of them."

"They mistook your kindness for weakness."

Mariana nodded once.

"No more."

The company's chief legal officer slid a thick folder across the table.

"Emergency Asset Protection Protocol has been activated."

"Every company secretly financed through Escalante Capital has been identified."

"Every personal guarantee signed by Mrs. Mariana Escalante has been revoked."

"Every trust account has been frozen."

The CFO spoke next.

"Andrew's corporation has less than eighteen hours of operating cash."

"The banks only extended credit because your private foundation guaranteed every loan."

Mariana smiled faintly.

"And now?"

"They'll default before noon."

Meanwhile...

Andrew woke up later than usual.

He stretched confidently, expecting another perfect day.

Instead...

His phone exploded with notifications.

URGENT

PAYMENT FAILURE

ACCOUNT FROZEN

LOAN REVIEW INITIATED

His smile disappeared.

Brenda rolled over beside him.

"What's wrong?"

Andrew frowned.

"Probably some banking error."

Then another call came.

His chief financial officer.

His voice trembled.

"Sir..."

"The banks have suspended our credit lines."

"Our investors are demanding emergency explanations."

"Our payroll account is empty."

Andrew laughed nervously.

"Impossible."

"We have over four hundred million in available capital."

"No..."

The CFO whispered.

"You don't."

"You never did."

Andrew sat upright.

"What are you talking about?"

"The money..."

"...belongs to Escalante Capital."

"The guarantees were signed by Mrs. Mariana Escalante."

"When she revoked them..."

"...everything disappeared."

For the first time in years...

Andrew felt fear.
