Chapter 3: The Morning of Consequences

Chapter 3: The Morning of Consequences
Andrew arrived at corporate headquarters the next morning wearing his usual confidence.
His access card flashed red.
ACCESS DENIED.
He frowned and tried again.
Nothing.
The Head of Security approached respectfully.
"Good morning, Mr. Hawthorne."
"My card isn't working."
"It has been deactivated."
Andrew laughed.
"Call IT."
"There is no technical issue, sir."
A sealed envelope was placed in his hands.
Inside was an official notice.
His appointment as Chief Executive Officer had been terminated.
Pending investigations into financial governance would begin immediately.
He was instructed to return all company property.
At the mansion, Margaret's morning began no better.
The bank informed her that accounts connected to the corporate trust had been frozen.
The luxury vehicles in the garage were scheduled for collection.
Even the mansion itself belonged not to Andrew personally, but to the holding company now controlled by Mariana.
Brenda stared in disbelief.
"You told me everything was yours."
Andrew's hands trembled.
"I thought it was."
A calm voice interrupted him.
"You never owned it."
Mariana walked into the foyer with two attorneys beside her.
She looked exactly as she had the night before.
Only now, no one laughed.
Andrew stepped forward.
"Please... we can fix this."
Mariana met his eyes.
"I spent four years fixing every mistake you made."
She paused.
"You spent one night destroying everything we had."
No one spoke as security escorted Andrew and Brenda from the mansion.

Margaret remained standing in the empty foyer, finally understanding that pride had cost her far more than status.
It had cost her family.
