Chapter 11 — The Man Behind Nathan

Chapter 11 — The Man Behind Nathan
For several seconds, nobody moved.
My mother stood beside the table with tears still running down her face.
Celeste held the pistol at her side.
Adrian Vale stared at the message on his phone.
And I could hear only one sentence repeating inside my head.
He was never running from your grandfather.
He was running from me.
I looked at Adrian.
“Why?”
He didn't answer.
“Why was my father running from you?”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Because Jonathan knew what I was capable of.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“It is the only answer you need.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“I have spent twenty-nine years believing my father abandoned me because he was afraid of my grandfather.”
Adrian remained silent.
“My mother lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“My grandfather lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Nathan lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Celeste lied to me.”
She lowered her eyes.
“And now you're telling me my father lied too.”
Adrian finally looked at me.
“Your father didn't lie about everything.”
“Then tell me what he lied about.”
He glanced at my mother.
She shook her head.
“Don't.”
Adrian smiled bitterly.
“You still want to protect her?”
“She is my daughter.”
“And Jonathan was your husband.”
My mother flinched.
Adrian looked back at me.
“Ask yourself why a man would disappear from his own daughter's life for nearly three decades.”
“Because he wanted to protect me.”
“No.”
“Because my grandfather threatened him.”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Adrian's voice became quiet.
“Because Jonathan knew he was the reason you were in danger.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“He wasn't protecting you from the family.”
Adrian took one step toward me.
“He was protecting the family from what he had done.”
I couldn't breathe.
“What did he do?”
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
My mother whispered:
“Emma, you don't need to hear this from him.”
I turned toward her.
“I need the truth.”
She closed her eyes.
Adrian said:
“Your father created the first version of the Black Account.”
I froze.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“My grandfather created it.”
“He expanded it.”
“That isn't what you told me.”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“Your grandfather turned it into an empire.”
He paused.
“But Jonathan built the original structure.”
I shook my head.
“Why?”
“To protect the family.”
“From what?”
“Bankruptcy.”
I stared at him.
Adrian continued.
“Thirty years ago, your family was nearly destroyed.”
“By whom?”
“Your grandfather had made a series of disastrous investments.”
“Then what did Jonathan do?”
“He found a way to hide the losses.”
“And that became the Black Account.”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
“So my father wasn't innocent.”
“No.”
“But he tried to fix it.”
Adrian nodded.
“He realized what your grandfather was doing with the system.”
“Using people.”
“Using identities.”
“Moving ownership.”
“Creating false beneficiaries.”
“Yes.”
“And that's when they turned against each other.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“That's when Jonathan became dangerous.”
“To them.”
“To everyone.”
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
Don't believe Adrian.
I stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
He was the one who recruited Nathan.
My heart stopped.
I looked at Adrian.
“You recruited Nathan.”
He didn't deny it.
My mother whispered:
“Emma…”
I turned toward her.
“Is it true?”
“Yes.”
The word barely escaped her lips.
I looked back at Adrian.
“When?”
“Eleven years ago.”
“The year I met him.”
“Yes.”
“Why Nathan?”
“Because he was close enough to the family to be trusted.”
“And far enough away to be controlled.”
Adrian nodded.
“His father owed me.”
“What did he owe you?”
“Everything.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
“Nathan's family was drowning.”
“Financially?”
“Legally. Financially. Politically.”
Adrian's voice was cold.
“I saved them.”
“And in return?”
“I asked Nathan to do one thing.”
“What?”
“Marry you.”
The room went silent.
I felt like someone had punched me.
“He wasn't supposed to love you,” Adrian continued.
“He was supposed to gain access to the Trust.”
“And then?”
“Convince you to transfer control.”
“That's what the forged document was for.”
“Yes.”
“Who forged it?”
Adrian looked toward Celeste.
She lowered her eyes.
“She did.”
I turned toward her.
“You told me you did it because Samuel threatened your daughter.”
“I did.”
Adrian laughed.
“Half the truth.”
Celeste looked at him.
“Don't.”
“You didn't forge the document for Samuel.”
She went pale.
“You forged it for Nathan.”
I stared at her.
“Is that true?”
Celeste whispered:
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“Because Nathan asked me.”
I looked at the woman I had thought was my husband's mistress.
“You helped him steal my shares.”
“I thought I was saving him.”
“From what?”
“From Adrian.”
Adrian smiled.
“She thought Nathan could escape.”
I looked at Nathan's father.
“Could he?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Nathan was never the one in control.”
My mother sat down.
She looked exhausted.
“Emma,” she said softly.
“I need to tell you something.”
I didn't answer.
She continued anyway.
“When you met Nathan, I knew who he was.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don't know everything.”
“What else?”
“I asked Celeste to investigate him.”
“Why?”
“Because Jonathan warned me.”
“About Nathan?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“He said Nathan wasn't the danger.”
I frowned.
“Then who was?”
My mother looked directly at Adrian.
“Him.”
Adrian smiled.
“Jonathan always blamed me.”
“Because you were behind it.”
“No.”
My mother stood.
“Because you were behind Nathan.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“You don't understand what you're saying.”
“I understand exactly.”
My mother pointed at him.
“You recruited Nathan.”
“You funded his company.”
“You arranged his first major acquisition.”
“You placed him in Emma's life.”
“And you controlled him through his father's debt.”
Adrian said nothing.
I turned toward him.
“Why?”
He finally answered.
“Because Nathan had something Jonathan didn't.”
“What?”
“Ambition.”
I almost laughed.
“You destroyed my marriage because of ambition?”
“No.”
Adrian's voice was quiet.
“Because Nathan would do what Jonathan refused to do.”
“And what was that?”
“Finish the system.”
The words hung in the air.
I felt a chill.
“What system?”
“The one your grandfather started.”
“The identity system.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted Nathan to inherit it.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at me.
“I wanted Nathan to control it.”
“Why?”
“Because the system had become too dangerous.”
I stared.
“You're saying you wanted to control it for my protection?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“For mine.”
That was the first honest thing Adrian had said.
I stepped backward.
“So that's it.”
“What?”
“You weren't trying to steal my shares.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“You were trying to use my shares to gain control of the system.”
“Yes.”
“And Nathan was your puppet.”
“He was useful.”
“Robert?”
“Useful.”
“Celeste?”
“Useful.”
“My mother?”
“Necessary.”
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“And me?”
Adrian looked at me.
“Essential.”
My phone rang.
Nathan.
I answered.
“Where are you?”
His voice was frantic.
“Emma, listen to me.”
“I'm with Adrian.”
Silence.
“Get away from him.”
“Why?”
“He knows where Jonathan is.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Nathan's breathing became uneven.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“Your father isn't at the estate.”
Adrian's face changed.
I noticed.
“Where is he?”
Nathan whispered:
“Under the estate.”
I froze.
“What?”
“There's an underground facility.”
Adrian moved toward me.
I stepped away.
“Nathan, what is there?”
“Records.”
“What kind?”
“Everything.”
I looked at Adrian.
His face had gone pale.
“Nathan.”
“There are files on your family.”
“How many?”
“Thousands.”
“And Claire?”
Silence.
“Is Claire there?”
Nathan whispered:
“Yes.”
Celeste covered her mouth.
I looked at her.
“You said my grandfather had her.”
“I thought he did.”
Nathan continued.
“Emma…”
“What?”
“There's another person there.”
“Who?”
“My father.”
I froze.
“Adrian's father?”
“No.”
Nathan's voice cracked.
“My father is Samuel Cross.”
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Adrian.
Then at Nathan's father.
Then at Celeste.
Nothing made sense.
“What did you just say?”
“My biological father isn't Adrian.”
I stared at the phone.
“Nathan…”
“Adrian raised me.”
“But?”
“But Samuel is my real father.”
My heart pounded.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Adrian threatened to kill him.”
I looked at Adrian.
He was furious.
“Nathan,” I whispered.
“Get out of there.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian isn't the man behind the system.”
“Then who is?”
Nathan was silent.
Then:
“Samuel.”
The call ended.
I looked at Adrian.
“You lied.”
He didn't answer.
“You said Samuel worked for my grandfather.”
“I said nothing of the sort.”
“You let me believe it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel wanted you to think he was dead.”
I felt my blood run cold.
“Why would he?”
“Because he has been watching you for twenty-nine years.”
“Watching me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you are the only person who can expose him.”
I looked at Celeste.
She was shaking.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“About Nathan's father?”
“Yes.”
“And you still worked for him.”
“I had no choice.”
“Everyone says that.”
Celeste's voice broke.
“You don't understand what Samuel does to people who disobey him.”
“Then help me understand.”
She looked at Adrian.
“He doesn't threaten people with money.”
“Then what?”
“He erases them.”
I remembered the identity system.
“Literally.”
“Yes.”
“That's how Claire disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“And your old identity.”
“Yes.”
“Samuel created them.”
“Yes.”
I turned toward Adrian.
“Then why are you afraid of him?”
For the first time, Adrian looked genuinely vulnerable.
“Because he created me too.”
I didn't understand.
“What?”
Adrian swallowed.
“My name isn't Adrian Vale.”
Silence.
“Then who are you?”
He looked at my mother.
She whispered:
“David Cross.”
I felt dizzy.
“Samuel's brother.”
“Yes.”
Adrian continued.
“I was supposed to inherit the system.”
“Then what happened?”
“Samuel took it.”
“Why?”
“Because I refused to use it against children.”
My mother looked down.
“He disappeared me.”
“How?”
“Changed my identity.”
“Made you Adrian Vale.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“I built my own network.”
“To fight him.”
“To survive him.”
I stared.
“So all these years…”
“Samuel and I have been fighting over the system.”
“And Nathan was caught in the middle.”
“Yes.”
“And I was the key.”
“Yes.”
I suddenly understood why everyone had lied.
Every person had been protecting something.
My mother protected me.
Celeste protected Claire.
Nathan protected his father.
Adrian protected himself.
And Samuel protected the system.
But none of them had told me the most important truth.
They had all been fighting over me.
I turned toward my mother.
“Where is Jonathan?”
She looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
“I don't know.”
“Someone does.”
She shook her head.
“Emma…”
“I am done being protected.”
I walked toward the door.
Adrian blocked my path.
“You can't go.”
I stared at him.
“Move.”
“You're walking into a war.”
“I've been in one my entire life.”
“You don't know what you're doing.”
“I know exactly what I'm doing.”
I held up the brass key.
“I'm going to the estate.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You don't understand what happens if you use that key.”
“Then I'll find out.”
He grabbed my wrist.
Celeste raised her weapon.
“Let her go.”
Adrian released me.
I walked out.
The drive to the estate took nearly an hour.
Celeste came with me.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, she said:
“You shouldn't trust me.”
“I don't.”
“Good.”
I glanced at her.
“But I need you.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“Where is the underground entrance?”
She looked ahead.
“Under the old greenhouse.”
“What will we find?”
“Records.”
“Jonathan?”
“Maybe.”
“Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Samuel?”
She hesitated.
“Maybe.”
I tightened my hands around the steering wheel.
“And if he's there?”
“Then don't let him talk to you.”
“Why?”
“He's very good at making people believe what he wants them to believe.”
“I've had practice.”
Celeste gave me a sad smile.
“So have I.”
The estate appeared through the trees.
The house looked abandoned.
Dark windows.
Overgrown gardens.
Broken fountain.
But there was one thing that didn't belong.
A single light was glowing beneath the greenhouse.
I stopped the car.
Celeste looked at me.
“That's it.”
We got out.
The night was silent.
Too silent.
I found the greenhouse.
Behind the rusted shelves was a steel door.
Celeste entered a code.
The door opened.
A staircase descended into darkness.
We went down.
One step.
Then another.
The air became colder.
At the bottom was a corridor.
Thousands of files lined the walls.
Names.
Dates.
Birth certificates.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Identities.
Lives.
All erased.
All controlled.
I stopped.
“Oh my God.”
Celeste whispered:
“This is what Samuel built.”
Then I saw a familiar name.
Emma Harper.
My heart stopped.
I pulled the file from the shelf.
Inside was a photograph of me.
Six years old.
Then twelve.
Then eighteen.
Then twenty-five.
Every year.
Every birthday.
Someone had been watching me my entire life.
The final page contained one sentence.
Primary Subject: Emma Harper.
Status: Ready.
I looked at Celeste.
“What does ready mean?”
She didn't answer.
A door opened at the end of the corridor.
A man stepped into the light.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
I recognized him immediately.
The man from the photograph.
The man from the jewelry store.
The man who had been watching me.
Samuel Cross.
He smiled.
“Hello, Emma.”
I couldn't move.
Celeste whispered:
“Don't speak.”
Samuel ignored her.
He looked at the file in my hands.
“You finally found it.”
I stared at him.
“Where is my father?”
Samuel's smile disappeared.
“You came all this way for Jonathan?”
“Yes.”
“Then you're going to be disappointed.”
“Why?”
“Because your father isn't the person you think he is.”
“Where is he?”
Samuel took a step closer.
“Behind you.”
I turned.
A door opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Thin.
Gray hair.
His face was worn by years of pain.
But I knew those eyes.
I had seen them in photographs all my life.
My heart stopped.
“Dad?”
Jonathan Harper looked at me.
Tears filled his eyes.
“Emma.”
I couldn't breathe.
He stepped forward.
Then Samuel said quietly:
“Now ask your father why he gave me your name twenty-nine years ago.”
Jonathan froze.
I stared at him.
“What?”
My father looked at Samuel.
Then at me.
And the truth in his eyes was more terrifying than any lie I had heard.
“Emma…”
His voice broke.
“I didn't give him your name.”
Samuel smiled.
“Then tell her who did.”
Jonathan looked toward the corridor.
May you like
And whispered one word.
“Your mother.”
