Chapter 14 — The Fortune They Tried to Steal

Chapter 14 — The Fortune They Tried to Steal
The name on the screen didn't change.
NATHAN VALE.
For several seconds, I simply stared at it.
My daughter was still clinging to me.
Jonathan stood beside the locked door.
And somewhere behind the walls, a machine counted down the final hour of my family's fortune.
00:57:41
I looked at Jonathan.
“Tell me that's fake.”
He didn't answer.
“Jonathan.”
He swallowed.
“It isn't.”
My chest tightened.
“Then Nathan wins.”
“Not necessarily.”
“His name is on the screen.”
“That's what they want you to believe.”
I looked at the original will in my hands.
“Then what is this?”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“It's the key.”
“To what?”
“The real inheritance.”
A speaker crackled above us.
Samuel's voice filled the room.
“Very good, Emma.”
I turned toward the ceiling.
“You're enjoying this.”
“I'm enjoying watching you finally understand your family.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“No.”
“You hid her.”
“I protected her.”
“From you?”
“From everyone.”
I held Claire tighter.
“You don't get to call this protection.”
Samuel laughed softly.
“You're still thinking like a daughter.”
“What should I think like?”
“An heir.”
The timer continued.
00:54:13
Samuel continued.
“You have spent your entire life believing wealth was the prize.”
“What is it, then?”
“Authority.”
I frowned.
“What authority?”
“The ability to determine who lives under an identity and who disappears from the system.”
My stomach turned.
“You're talking about controlling people's lives.”
“Yes.”
“And you expect me to inherit that?”
“No.”
The speaker went silent.
Then Samuel said:
“I expect you to destroy it.”
I froze.
Jonathan looked at me.
“What did he say?”
Samuel continued.
“The Trust was never designed to make you rich.”
“Then what?”
“To give you the power to shut everything down.”
I stared at the screen.
“Then why Nathan?”
“Because Nathan is the contingency.”
“What contingency?”
“If you refuse.”
The timer flashed.
00:51:02
Jonathan whispered:
“That's why Friday mattered.”
I looked at him.
“Explain.”
“If Emma refuses the Trust, ownership automatically transfers to the secondary beneficiary.”
“Nathan.”
“Yes.”
“And once Nathan receives it…”
“The system becomes permanent.”
My heart sank.
“So this entire thing…”
“Was designed to force you into choosing.”
“Between destroying the Trust and giving it to Nathan.”
Jonathan nodded.
Samuel's voice returned.
“Your family spent thirty years building a machine they could never control.”
“You expect me to believe you're helping me destroy it?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because I can't destroy it.”
“Why not?”
“Because I'm not the final heir.”
I looked at the will.
“And I am.”
“Yes.”
Claire tugged at my sleeve.
“Mom?”
I looked down.
“What?”
“Why is that man talking to us?”
I crouched beside her.
“Because he wants something.”
“What?”
“I don't know yet.”
She looked at the screen.
“Is he bad?”
I hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
“Yes.”
Claire nodded.
“I thought so.”
My heart broke.
“You've been here before.”
She looked away.
“How long?”
“I don't know.”
“Who brought you?”
She pointed toward the opposite door.
“Him.”
The door opened.
A man stepped through.
Nathan.
My breath caught.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was torn.
There was blood on his forehead.
“Emma.”
I stood.
“You.”
Nathan raised both hands.
“I didn't know where else to go.”
I stepped between him and Claire.
“Stay away from my daughter.”
He stopped.
“I understand.”
“You were part of this.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to steal my shares.”
“I did.”
“Why should I believe anything you say?”
“You shouldn't.”
That answer surprised me.
Nathan looked at Jonathan.
Then at me.
“But I can show you something.”
He reached into his pocket.
A small flash drive.
“I stole this from Samuel.”
I didn't move.
“What is it?”
“Everything.”
“That's what everyone says.”
Nathan looked at me.
“This one is different.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel doesn't know I have it.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Give it to me.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't trust you either.”
Jonathan stopped.
Nathan looked at me.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“Then you need to see it yourself.”
I took the drive.
A monitor appeared on the wall.
Nathan connected it.
Folders filled the screen.
TRUST.
BLACK ACCOUNT.
IDENTITY PROGRAM.
EMMA HARPER.
NATHAN VALE.
JONATHAN HARPER.
CLAIRE HARPER.
My stomach twisted.
I clicked my own folder.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Medical records.
School records.
Bank accounts.
Photographs.
Private conversations.
Everything.
Someone had been documenting my entire life.
I opened the oldest file.
A photograph of me as a baby.
Underneath it:
PRIMARY HEIR — FEMALE CHILD.
Then another document.
GENETIC VERIFICATION: CONFIRMED.
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
Nathan answered.
“Your bloodline is genuine.”
I frowned.
“Why would anyone need to verify that?”
“Because there were replacements.”
I looked at Jonathan.
He nodded.
“The Trust doesn't recognize names.”
“It recognizes genetics.”
“Exactly.”
I opened another file.
CONTINGENCY HEIR — NATHAN VALE.
Then another.
SECONDARY HEIR — CLAIRE HARPER.
I froze.
“Claire?”
Nathan nodded.
“She was never supposed to inherit.”
“Then why is she listed?”
“Because she's your daughter.”
The room went silent.
“The Trust recognized her.”
I looked at Claire.
She was watching the screen.
“What happens if I die?”
Nathan didn't answer.
Jonathan did.
“Claire inherits.”
I tightened my arms around her.
“And if I refuse the Trust?”
“Claire becomes the next heir.”
I stared at the timer.
00:39:28
Suddenly, the entire plan became clear.
They hadn't only been trying to control me.
They had been preparing for my death.
Nathan's name appeared because I was the primary heir.
Claire's name appeared because she was my biological successor.
The forged documents.
The affair.
The assault.
The financial pressure.
The threats.
Every piece of the plan had one purpose.
Make me surrender.
Or make me disappear.
I turned toward Nathan.
“You knew about Claire.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Four years.”
I stared at him.
“You knew I had a daughter.”
“I knew there was a child.”
“You knew she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you still married me.”
He looked devastated.
“I was ordered to.”
“But you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Nathan looked at me.
“Because I fell in love with you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You don't get to say that now.”
“I know.”
“You betrayed me.”
“Yes.”
“You brought Celeste into my life.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to transfer my shares.”
“Yes.”
“And now you want forgiveness?”
“No.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I want you alive.”
A gunshot exploded through the wall.
Everyone ducked.
The monitor shattered.
Claire screamed.
I pulled her behind me.
Jonathan drew his weapon.
Nathan grabbed another gun from beneath his jacket.
“Where did that come from?” I asked.
“Samuel's men.”
“How many?”
Nathan looked toward the corridor.
“Too many.”
The lights went out.
Emergency alarms began screaming.
Jonathan shouted:
“Stay behind me!”
I held Claire.
Nathan moved toward the door.
“Where are you going?”
“To stop them.”
“You'll die.”
“Probably.”
He looked at me.
“But if they get through that door, you'll die too.”
Then he disappeared into the darkness.
The gunfire continued.
One shot.
Then another.
Then silence.
I heard footsteps.
Someone approached.
The door opened.
Nathan stood there.
Blood covered his sleeve.
“Are you hurt?”
He shook his head.
“Not mine.”
He looked behind him.
“They're gone.”
I exhaled.
Then Samuel's voice returned.
“You really think you've won?”
Nathan looked at the speaker.
“You're finished.”
Samuel laughed.
“No.”
A red light appeared on the ceiling.
Nathan froze.
“What's that?”
Jonathan's face changed.
“Security purge.”
“What?”
“The facility is going to lock down.”
“For how long?”
“Until the Trust activates.”
The timer continued.
00:27:03
I looked at Nathan.
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
He answered quietly.
“Every financial account connected to the Trust transfers automatically.”
“To me?”
“No.”
He looked at the screen.
“To whoever the system recognizes as the legitimate heir.”
“But it says Nathan Vale.”
“That isn't your name.”
Nathan stared at him.
“What?”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“The system doesn't recognize Nathan Vale.”
I frowned.
“Then who?”
Jonathan looked at Nathan.
“Samuel's biological records were altered.”
Nathan's face went pale.
“What are you saying?”
“You aren't Nathan Vale.”
Silence.
Nathan stepped backward.
“My father…”
Jonathan nodded.
“He gave you a false identity.”
“Why?”
“Because the real Nathan Vale died as a child.”
Nathan's breathing became uneven.
“Then who am I?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“That is the final secret.”
The lights suddenly came back.
The screen flickered.
The countdown disappeared.
A new document opened.
ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY IDENTIFICATION.
A name appeared.
EMMA HARPER.
Then beneath it:
SECONDARY BENEFICIARY: CLAIRE HARPER.
Nathan's name vanished.
I stared.
“What happened?”
Jonathan looked at the will.
“You changed the succession.”
“I didn't do anything.”
“You did.”
“What?”
“You brought Claire here.”
I looked at my daughter.
The system had recognized her.
My blood.
My child.
The Trust no longer saw Nathan as the successor.
It saw the real bloodline.
The screen changed again.
PRIMARY HEIR: EMMA HARPER
SUCCESSOR: CLAIRE HARPER
TRANSFER STATUS: PENDING
Then one final line appeared.
AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
I understood.
I had to choose.
I looked at the original will.
Then at Claire.
Then at Jonathan.
Then at Nathan.
“What happens if I authorize it?”
Jonathan answered:
“You own everything.”
“And the system?”
“You control it.”
“And if I refuse?”
“Claire inherits when you die.”
I looked at my daughter.
“No.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“I don't want it.”
Jonathan stared.
“Emma.”
“I don't want their money.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
I looked at the screen.
“My family spent thirty years fighting over this.”
“Yes.”
“People died.”
“Yes.”
“People were erased.”
“Yes.”
“My father disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“My daughter was hidden.”
“Yes.”
I placed the will on the table.
“And I'm not continuing it.”
I pressed the button.
REJECT.
The system beeped.
Everyone froze.
Samuel's voice screamed through the speakers.
“No!”
The entire facility began shaking.
Lights flashed.
Files disappeared from the screens.
Accounts began closing.
The Black Account began collapsing.
Jonathan stared at me.
“What did you do?”
I looked at him.
“I ended it.”
But the system wasn't finished.
A warning appeared.
REJECTION ACCEPTED.
Then:
FINAL SUCCESSOR: CLAIRE HARPER.
I looked at my daughter.
Her name appeared in gold.
Then another message:
TRUST WILL TRANSFER UPON PRIMARY HEIR'S DEATH.
My stomach tightened.
Samuel laughed.
“You fool.”
His voice echoed through the facility.
“You didn't destroy anything.”
“You just made your daughter the most valuable person in the world.”
I pulled Claire closer.
The lights went red.
A siren began screaming.
Nathan looked toward the corridor.
“Emma.”
“What?”
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
He pointed toward the screen.
A new message appeared.
PRIMARY HEIR TERMINATION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“It means Samuel has one final option.”
“What?”
He whispered:
“Kill you.”
I held Claire tighter.
“No.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“I'll protect her.”
Jonathan looked at him.
“You can't.”
Nathan stared back.
“Watch me.”
A door at the end of the corridor opened.
Samuel stood there.
He wasn't alone.
Behind him were six armed men.
And beside him stood a woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Celeste's face went white.
“No…”
The woman smiled.
She was wearing my mother's old wedding ring.
Samuel placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Emma,” he said.
“Meet your grandmother.”
I couldn't move.
My grandmother had supposedly been dead for twenty years.
But she was standing in front of me.
Alive.
And smiling.
Then she looked at Claire.
“My bloodline.”
May you like
Her eyes gleamed.
“My future.”
