Chapter 2 – The Protective Order

Chapter 2 – The Protective Order
The first thing Diego did after receiving the papers was laugh.
Not because he thought the situation was funny.
Because he couldn't accept it was real.
The emergency protective order sat on the polished glass table inside his attorney's office.
A few sheets of paper.
A few signatures.
A few paragraphs of legal language.
Yet somehow...
Those pages had accomplished what years of arguments never could.
They had created a boundary between him and Valerie.
A boundary he could not cross.
"She can't do this."
Diego stood beside the window overlooking downtown Denver.
His lawyer, Michael Reeves, remained seated.
"She can."
"No."
Diego shook his head.
"You don't understand my family."
Michael looked up.
"I understand exactly what happened."
Diego turned sharply.
"What does that mean?"
"It means your wife called the police after you assaulted her."
The word hung in the room.
Assaulted.
Not argued.
Not disagreed.
Not had a bad night.
Assaulted.
Diego hated hearing it.
Because it made the situation sound exactly like what it was.
"She provoked me."
Michael didn't respond immediately.
That silence irritated Diego.
"What?"
"I'm choosing my words carefully."
"Why?"
"Because if you continue saying things like that, the prosecution will use them."
Diego frowned.
"Prosecution?"
Michael leaned forward.
"Diego, listen carefully."
"This is no longer a family argument."
"You have a criminal investigation."
"You have a restraining order."
"And you have witnesses."
Diego's jaw tightened.
"Natalie."
Michael nodded.
"Your sister-in-law."
"She betrayed us."
Michael corrected him.
"No."
"She testified."
Across town...
Valerie sat in her attorney's conference room.
Her head still ached.
The bruise near her temple had darkened overnight.
But her voice remained steady.
"I want everything documented."
Her attorney, Samantha Whitmore, nodded.
"Medical records?"
"Already requested."
"Police report?"
"Filed."
"Witness statements?"
"Being collected."
Samantha looked at her carefully.
"You understand this could become very public."
Valerie looked down at the photograph on the table.
The dinner.
The broken plate.
The blood.
The moment she realized she was alone.
"I spent years protecting his reputation."
She looked up.
"I'm done protecting someone who tried to destroy mine."
The protective order hearing was scheduled for forty-eight hours later.
Forty-eight hours.
Enough time for the Alvarez family to react.
And react they did.
By noon, the first article appeared online.
LOCAL BUSINESSWOMAN ACCUSES HUSBAND AFTER FAMILY DISPUTE
Valerie read the headline silently.
Then another appeared.
ALVAREZ FAMILY CLAIMS INCIDENT WAS MISUNDERSTOOD
Then another.
SOURCES SAY MARRIAGE HAD BEEN UNDER STRAIN FOR MONTHS
She almost smiled.
The strategy was predictable.
Change the story.
Make her emotional.
Make him misunderstood.
Make violence sound like a disagreement.
Her assistant, Claire, walked into the office.
"Valerie?"
She looked up.
"Yes?"
"There are reporters outside."
"How many?"
"At least twenty."
Valerie closed her laptop.
"Let them wait."
Claire hesitated.
"Are you sure?"
Valerie looked toward the window.
"When I was silent, they spoke for me."
She picked up her coat.
"That ends now."
The courthouse steps were crowded.
Cameras flashed.
Microphones appeared.
Questions followed immediately.
"Ms. Bennett, did your husband intentionally hurt you?"
"Are you seeking revenge?"
"Is this about financial disagreements?"
Valerie stopped.
For months, she had avoided attention.
Today, she didn't.
She looked directly at the cameras.
"My husband attacked me because I refused to give away property that legally belonged to me."
The reporters became silent.
She continued.
"This is not a divorce argument."
"This is not a family misunderstanding."
"Violence is not a negotiation tactic."
Then she walked inside.
The hearing lasted three hours.
Diego arrived with his attorneys.
Victoria arrived wearing a perfectly tailored suit and a carefully practiced expression of sadness.
She looked nothing like the woman who had watched Valerie bleed.
Instead, she looked like the victim.
The judge reviewed the evidence.
Medical records.
Police report.
Witness statements.
Then she looked toward Diego.
"Mr. Alvarez."
"Yes, Your Honor."
"Do you deny throwing the plate?"
Diego hesitated.
A mistake.
A small one.
But everyone saw it.
"I deny intending to injure my wife."
The judge looked at him.
"That was not my question."
Silence.
Samantha stood.
"Your Honor, we request a temporary protective order extension."
She presented photographs.
"The defendant used a heavy ceramic object as a weapon."
She placed another document.
"He has also contacted my client indirectly through family members despite being instructed not to."
Diego immediately looked angry.
"I only wanted to talk."
The judge looked up.
"About what?"
Diego opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Victoria spoke.
"Your Honor, this entire situation has been exaggerated."
The courtroom turned.
The judge looked at her.
"Who are you?"
"Victoria Alvarez. His mother."
"And why are you speaking?"
Victoria paused.
"I just want the court to understand that my son is not a violent person."
The judge studied her.
"Ma'am."
"Yes?"
"The court is not deciding whether your son is a violent person."
"It is deciding whether there is sufficient evidence that protection is needed."
Victoria lowered her eyes.
The judge granted the order.
No direct contact.
No indirect contact.
No approaching Valerie's home or workplace.
No harassment through family members.
When the gavel fell...
Diego looked defeated for the first time.
But the battle wasn't over.
Outside the courthouse, Victoria immediately called a family meeting.
Everyone gathered at the estate.
The same dining room.
The same table.
But the atmosphere had changed.
No laughter.
No confidence.
Only fear.
"This cannot continue."
Victoria paced.
"We need to control the narrative."
Diego sat silently.
His father, Richard, finally spoke.
"The police report is a problem."
"The media is a problem."
"The witnesses are a problem."
Victoria stopped.
"Then remove the problems."
Everyone looked at her.
Richard frowned.
"What exactly are you suggesting?"
Victoria's expression hardened.
"Valerie has always been too confident."
"She thinks money makes her untouchable."
A pause.
"We remind her that nobody wins against the Alvarez family."
Meanwhile...
Valerie returned home.
She removed her coat.
Placed her keys on the table.
And finally allowed herself to feel exhausted.
The apartment was quiet.
Safe.
Her safe place.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
But something made her answer.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice whispered.
"Valerie?"
She froze.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then:
"It's Natalie."
Valerie sat down.
"Natalie?"
"I need to tell you something before they find out I called."
Her voice trembled.
"What?"
Natalie took a shaky breath.
"The plate wasn't the first time Diego lost control."
Valerie felt cold.
"What are you saying?"
"I mean..."
Silence.
Then the words that changed everything:
"Your dinner wasn't an accident."
"It was planned."
Valerie gripped the phone.
"Planned by who?"
Natalie's voice became barely audible.
"All of them."
The call ended.
Valerie stared at the screen.
For the first time since the attack...
She understood.
The plate was never the beginning.
May you like
It was the moment they were finally caught.
