Chapter 5 – The Financial Investigation

Chapter 5 – The Financial Investigation

The conference room on the forty-second floor of Bennett Urban Development Group had never felt so quiet.

Usually, the room was filled with discussions about construction schedules, architectural designs, city approvals, and billion-dollar development plans.

Today, there were no blueprints.

No models.

No investors.

Only documents.

Stacks of them.

Bank statements.

Transaction records.

Corporate filings.

Tax reports.

And one question written across everyone's mind:

How far did the Alvarez family go?

Valerie sat at the head of the table.

Not because she wanted to prove anything.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because after what happened, she understood something important.

The truth needed to be complete.

Not partial.

Not emotional.

Complete.

Across from her sat Samantha Whitmore, her attorney.

Beside Samantha was Daniel Foster, a forensic accountant Valerie had worked with for years.

Daniel opened his laptop.

"Valerie, before we begin..."

He looked serious.

"I want you to understand something."

"What?"

"What we found is bigger than a divorce dispute."

The room became silent.

Valerie folded her hands.

"Explain."

Daniel turned the laptop toward her.

"We started with Diego's personal accounts."

The first document appeared.

"At first, nothing seemed unusual."

"His salary matched his position."

"His expenses were reasonable."

"Then we checked accounts connected to his family."

A list appeared.

Multiple transfers.

Multiple dates.

Multiple companies.

Valerie frowned.

"What am I looking at?"

"Money movement."

Daniel pointed.

"These payments came from accounts connected to Diego's company."

"Where did they go?"

"Three different shell companies."

Samantha leaned forward.

"And who owns them?"

Daniel clicked another file.

"That took longer."

A pause.

"But we found the connection."

The name appeared.

Alvarez Family Holdings LLC

Valerie stared.

"Victoria?"

Daniel nodded.

"Partially."

"Richard?"

"Yes."

"And Diego?"

"Indirectly."

Valerie leaned back.

For years, she had suspected Diego was financially irresponsible.

Expensive cars.

Luxury vacations.

Designer clothes.

But she never imagined something like this.

"How much?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Approximately two point eight million dollars."

Silence.

Samantha looked shocked.

"Taken from where?"

Daniel opened another file.

"Several sources."

He listed them.

"Company reimbursements."

"False consulting payments."

"Inflated expense reports."

"Unauthorized transfers."

Valerie stared at the numbers.

"How long?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Five years."

The same amount of time she had been married.

The realization hurt.

Not because of the money.

She had enough money.

It hurt because every family dinner.

Every holiday.

Every conversation.

Had existed alongside a hidden betrayal.

"They weren't trying to take my apartment."

Valerie whispered.

Samantha looked at her.

"What?"

Valerie looked at the documents.

"They were trying to stabilize themselves."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

"The apartment was simply the easiest asset to target."

Meanwhile...

At the Alvarez estate...

Diego was having his own meeting.

But unlike Valerie's office, there were no calm discussions.

Only panic.

"You told me everything was handled."

Victoria's voice was sharp.

Diego slammed his hand against the table.

"I didn't know she had this much."

Richard looked at him.

"What exactly did you discover?"

Diego threw a folder down.

"She owns companies."

His parents stared.

"What?"

"Multiple."

Victoria picked up the documents.

Her face slowly changed.

"No."

"Yes."

Diego laughed bitterly.

"All these years..."

"We thought she was just an architect."

Victoria flipped through the papers.

"This can't be right."

Richard looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because people like that don't hide this much money."

Diego stared at his mother.

"People like what?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Because the truth was uncomfortable.

They had never underestimated Valerie because she was weak.

They underestimated her because she didn't show off.

That evening, Valerie received another call.

This time from a government investigator.

"Ms. Bennett?"

"Yes."

"My name is Agent Rachel Morgan."

Valerie immediately became cautious.

"How can I help you?"

"We're reviewing financial activity connected to several businesses."

"Related to Diego Alvarez?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Valerie looked toward Samantha.

"What kind of review?"

"Potential fraud."

The word hung there.

Fraud.

Not a family issue.

Not a misunderstanding.

A crime.

Agent Morgan continued.

"We have reason to believe your husband may have used your personal information without authorization."

Valerie frowned.

"What information?"

"Your signature."

Her expression changed.

"What?"

"We discovered documents submitted under your name."

"I didn't sign anything."

"We know."

The agent paused.

"That's why we're contacting you."

After the call ended, Samantha immediately requested a full document review.

"Check everything."

Valerie nodded.

"Everything."

The next forty-eight hours became a storm.

Every account.

Every contract.

Every business connection.

Everything connected to Diego was examined.

And every hour revealed something worse.

A mortgage application.

Signed electronically.

Using Valerie's information.

A business loan.

Approved using documents she never reviewed.

A credit line.

Opened without her knowledge.

Daniel placed another file on the table.

"This one is important."

Valerie opened it.

Her name appeared.

But not her signature.

Her stomach tightened.

"What is this?"

"A power of attorney."

She looked confused.

"I never granted him power of attorney."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Samantha became serious.

"This could change everything."

"Why?"

"Because if he forged your authorization..."

She closed the folder.

"This isn't just financial misconduct."

"This is identity fraud."

That night, Valerie returned home later than usual.

She stood in her apartment.

The same apartment they wanted.

The same place they believed represented everything they could take.

But now she understood something.

They didn't know her.

Not really.

They knew the version of her they created.

The quiet wife.

The woman who avoided conflict.

The woman who forgave too easily.

They never met the woman who spent years studying contracts.

Building companies.

Negotiating deals.

Protecting employees.

Her phone rang.

Samantha.

"Valerie."

"What happened?"

"We found another account."

"Whose?"

A pause.

"Diego's."

"How much?"

Samantha's voice became quieter.

"More than we expected."

Valerie closed her eyes.

"Tell me."

"The account was created three months before your wedding."

Silence.

"Valerie..."

"Yes?"

"We think he was already planning something before he married you."

The apartment suddenly felt colder.

Three months before their wedding.

Before vows.

Before promises.

Before "forever."

"What else?"

Samantha hesitated.

"There is one more thing."

"What?"

"The account received a large transfer."

"From who?"

Samantha looked at the file.

Then answered:

"Victoria Alvarez."

Valerie sat down.

Her mind moved through years of memories.

The first meeting with Diego.

The family dinners.

The compliments.

The sudden affection.

The way they encouraged her to marry quickly.

At the time, she thought she was being welcomed.

Now...

She wondered if she was being selected.

The next morning, the headline appeared everywhere.

INVESTIGATION EXPANDS INTO ALVAREZ FAMILY FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES

The Alvarez name was no longer associated with wealth.

It was associated with questions.

At the Alvarez estate, Victoria watched the news.

Her hands trembled.

"They found too much."

Richard looked at her.

"What do we do?"

For once...

Victoria had no answer.

Then Diego's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?"

A voice spoke.

Someone he didn't recognize.

Someone who knew exactly what was happening.

"You should stop fighting Valerie Bennett."

Diego froze.

"Who is this?"

The voice continued.

"Because you have no idea what she has been protecting."

A pause.

"And if you keep pushing..."

"You won't just lose your apartment."

"You'll lose everything."

The call ended.

Diego slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time...

He wondered if Valerie's silence had never been weakness.

Maybe it had been mercy.

And maybe...

May you like

That mercy had finally run out.
