Chapter 3: What They Never Knew About Valerie

Chapter 3: What They Never Knew About Valerie

Three months later...

The criminal trial filled the Denver courthouse.

The prosecution presented the security footage.

Medical reports.

Witness testimony.

Everything pointed to one conclusion.

Diego was convicted.

As reporters crowded outside the courthouse, one journalist asked Valerie,

"Mrs. Harper, what gave you the courage to fight back?"

She smiled gently.

"My father."

Confused, the reporter asked,

"What did he teach you?"

Valerie reached into her purse and unfolded an old photograph.

It showed a young girl standing beside a police officer.

"My father spent thirty years investigating domestic violence cases."

"He always told me..."

"'The first time someone raises a hand against you should also be the last time they ever get the chance.'"

The reporters fell silent.

"And that's why you called 911 immediately?"

She nodded.

"I knew exactly what happens when victims stay silent."
