Chapter 3: The Woman Who Finally Spoke

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Finally Spoke

Rain fell steadily over San Francisco.

Claire Bennett stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of her Mission Bay condominium, watching gray clouds drift across the bay.

Eight stitches.

Three hidden cameras.

One GPS tracker.

A folder documenting nearly two years of her finances.

The evidence proved one thing beyond any doubt.

The dinner had never been an argument.

It had been the final stage of a carefully prepared plan.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

She hesitated before answering.

"...Hello?"

For several seconds, only quiet breathing came through the speaker.

Then a trembling voice whispered,

"It's Maya."

Claire immediately straightened.

"Maya?"

"Don't say my name loudly."

"Are you alright?"

"No."

The answer came so quickly it frightened Claire.

"I'm using a prepaid phone."

"I only have a few minutes."

Claire closed the balcony door.

"What happened?"

Maya sounded as though she had been crying.

"They know I talked to the police."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Did someone threaten you?"

A long silence.

Then...

"They don't have to."

Claire understood.

Sometimes fear didn't require words.

"I need to tell you something."

"What?"

Maya took a shaky breath.

"You weren't Adrian's first victim."

Claire closed her eyes.

The note.

The sealed court case.

Emily Carter.

"So there really was someone before me."

"Yes."

"Who was she?"

"His ex-fiancée."

Claire froze.

"I thought I was his first serious relationship."

"That's what everyone believes."

"They made sure of it."

Maya's voice grew quieter.

"Her name was Emily Carter."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"The woman from Court Case 18-CV-4276?"

Maya sounded surprised.

"You found it."

"The files are sealed."

"They paid to make sure they stayed that way."

Claire walked toward her desk and opened a notebook.

"Tell me everything."

"It started six years ago."

"Emily was an architect."

"Smart."

"Independent."

"She had just inherited a townhouse from her grandmother."

Claire felt an uncomfortable chill.

Another property.

Another woman who owned real estate.

"The family adored her..."

"...until they realized the townhouse was worth nearly two million dollars."

Claire's pen stopped moving.

"They wanted it?"

"They wanted everything."

Maya continued.

"At first, it sounded reasonable."

"They suggested Emily rent it."

"Then they suggested Adrian manage it."

"Then they wanted his name added to the deed."

Claire whispered,

"Exactly like my condo."

"Yes."

"What happened when she refused?"

Maya didn't answer immediately.

When she finally spoke...

Her voice was barely audible.

"He broke her wrist."

Claire felt sick.

"It happened in their kitchen."

"He pushed her against a counter."

"She fell."

"Charles paid for the hospital."

"Eleanor convinced everyone Emily had slipped."

Claire gripped the phone tighter.

"Did she go to the police?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"They buried it."

Claire frowned.

"How?"

"Expensive lawyers."

"Private investigators."

"Character witnesses."

"They told everyone Emily had anger issues."

Claire's breathing slowed.

The same story.

The same lies.

"They followed her."

"They photographed her."

"They even hired someone to pretend to be her friend."

Claire looked toward the hidden cameras Officer Hernandez had removed.

The pattern was identical.

"Then why did the case disappear?"

Maya answered with obvious shame.

"Emily accepted a settlement."

Claire frowned.

"Why?"

"They threatened her younger brother."

Silence.

"She left California two weeks later."

"No one ever heard from her again."

Claire rubbed her forehead.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

Another long pause.

"Because..."

Maya's voice broke.

"...I helped them."

Claire didn't speak.

"I never hurt anyone."

"But I stayed quiet."

"I repeated their lies."

"I convinced myself it wasn't my business."

She began crying.

"I watched them destroy that woman."

"And now they're doing it to you."

Claire's anger softened.

"You were scared."

"That's not an excuse."

"No."

"It isn't."

Suddenly Maya lowered her voice even further.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"My father-in-law keeps a room no one is allowed to enter."

Claire frowned.

"What room?"

"The old wine archive beneath the estate."

"What about it?"

"That's where they keep everything."

"What do you mean?"

"Files."

"Videos."

"Settlement agreements."

"Photographs."

"Evidence."

Claire stared at the notebook.

"They keep records?"

"Of everyone."

Before Claire could ask another question...

Maya suddenly gasped.

Someone had entered the room where she was calling.

Claire heard footsteps.

A man's voice.

"Maya?"

She whispered urgently,

"I have to go."

"Wait—"

"If anything happens to me..."

The line went dead.

Claire immediately called back.

The prepaid number had already been disconnected.

Within an hour, she was sitting across from Officer Hernandez.

Claire handed over her notes.

The detective read every page carefully.

"If this is true..."

"It explains the sealed case."

Claire nodded.

"And maybe dozens of others."

Hernandez picked up her phone.

"I want Emily Carter located."

"Immediately."

By the following afternoon...

The investigation took an unexpected turn.

A private investigator hired by the District Attorney finally found Emily Carter.

She lived quietly under another surname in Portland.

She had agreed to testify.

Officer Hernandez smiled for the first time in days.

"This could establish a pattern of abuse."

Claire felt hope returning.

"When will she arrive?"

"Tomorrow morning."

That night...

Emily boarded a flight to San Francisco.

She never arrived.

At 6:15 a.m., Captain Morris called Officer Hernandez.

His voice sounded unusually tense.

"Emily Carter didn't check into her hotel."

"What?"

"Airport security confirms she landed."

"Then what happened?"

"We don't know."

Security cameras showed Emily collecting her luggage.

Walking outside.

Then entering a black luxury SUV.

The license plates were stolen.

The vehicle disappeared.

No ransom.

No phone calls.

No trace.

Emily Carter had vanished.

Again.

The District Attorney immediately classified her as a missing witness.

Federal authorities joined the search.

Claire watched the press conference from her living room.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Do you believe her disappearance is connected to the Caldwell investigation?"

The police refused to answer.

But everyone knew.

Late that evening...

Officer Hernandez arrived with troubling news.

"We interviewed airport employees."

"And?"

"One baggage handler remembered something."

"What?"

"He overheard a man telling Emily..."

The detective checked her notebook.

"...'Mr. Caldwell sent us.'"

Claire's blood turned cold.

"Adrian's father?"

"We don't know which Caldwell."

"But Emily trusted them enough to get into the vehicle."

Claire slowly shook her head.

"They found her before we did."

Just then, Claire's phone buzzed.

Another unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"...Hello?"

Silence.

Then...

A frightened whisper.

"It's me."

"Maya?"

"Listen carefully."

Her breathing was rapid.

"They've taken Emily."

Claire nearly dropped the phone.

"What?"

"I heard Charles talking."

"They moved her."

"Moved her where?"

"I don't know."

"Maya—"

"You have to be careful."

"They're destroying everything."

Claire's heart pounded.

"What do you mean?"

"They're burning files."

"They've emptied the archive room."

Claire stood up.

"When?"

"Tonight."

Officer Hernandez motioned for Claire to keep Maya talking while she traced the call.

Claire nodded.

"Maya..."

"Please."

"You have to leave that house."

"I can't."

"Why not?"

Silence.

Then Maya whispered something that made Claire's blood run cold.

"I'm not allowed."

The call ended.

Thirty seconds later...

Officer Hernandez received the trace report.

She frowned.

"What is it?"

"The phone wasn't inside the Caldwell estate."

Claire blinked.

"Then where?"

Hernandez slowly looked up.

"It originated from..."

She paused.

"...Caldwell Vineyards."

Claire frowned.

"They're the same property."

"No."

Hernandez pointed to a satellite map.

"The signal came from nearly half a mile underground."

Claire stared at the map.

Underground?

Beneath the vineyards?

Officer Hernandez zoomed in further.

Old construction records appeared.

An abandoned wine storage network built almost seventy years earlier.

Most of it had supposedly been sealed decades ago.

Supposedly.

The detective looked at Claire.

"I don't think Charles Caldwell has been storing wine down there."

Claire remembered Maya's words.

That's where they keep everything.

Then another thought struck her.

If the files were there...

If Emily had disappeared...

If Maya was calling from underground...

Then the Caldwell family's darkest secrets were no longer hidden behind polished smiles and expensive suits.

They were buried beneath the very estate where Claire's blood had stained a white tablecloth only days before.

May you like

And someone was willing to make people disappear to keep them buried.
