Chapter 8 – The Night of the Bruises

Chapter 8 – The Night of the Bruises

Some nights disappear with the sunrise.

Some nights stay forever.

They live inside memories.

Inside scars.

Inside the silence between two people who once loved each other.

For three years, everyone believed they knew what happened on the night Valeria was injured.

A tragic accident.

A woman overwhelmed by pregnancy.

A fall caused by exhaustion.

That was the story the Alcázar family repeated.

The story Sebastián accepted.

The story that almost destroyed his marriage.

But the truth had been waiting.

Waiting for someone brave enough to ask the right question.

And now, inside the hospital room, Sebastián finally asked.

"Tell me what happened that night."

Valeria looked at him.

Her eyes filled with memories she had spent years trying to bury.

"I was afraid you would never believe me."

Sebastián lowered his head.

"I know."

Those two words carried more pain than any apology.

Because she was right.

For years, he had chosen the easier truth.

The truth his family gave him.

The truth that allowed him to avoid seeing what was happening.

But now he wanted the real one.

Even if it destroyed him.

Three Years Earlier

The night began quietly.

Too quietly.

Valeria remembered that now.

The silence before a storm.

She had been seven months pregnant.

Her body was exhausted.

But she was happy.

She had spent the afternoon preparing a small gift for Sebastián.

A tiny pair of baby shoes.

A handwritten note.

A reminder that soon they would become parents.

She still remembered the message she sent him.

"Come home early tonight. I have something special for you."

He never came.

Instead, he sent a message.

"Business dinner. Don't wait."

Another moment she ignored.

Another excuse she accepted.

Because she loved him.

The Conversation With Rebeca

Around ten that night, Rebeca arrived.

Not unexpectedly.

Not emotionally.

Calmly.

That was what frightened Valeria.

People who were angry made mistakes.

People who were calm usually had plans.

"Where is Sebastián?"

Rebeca asked.

Valeria immediately felt something was wrong.

"At dinner."

Rebeca smiled.

"Of course he is."

A strange answer.

Valeria watched her carefully.

"Why are you here?"

Rebeca walked slowly through the living room.

Touching furniture.

Looking around.

As if inspecting a place that already belonged to her.

"I came to talk about the baby."

Valeria placed a protective hand over her stomach.

"What about my baby?"

Rebeca smiled.

"Our baby."

The word made Valeria uncomfortable.

"No."

Rebeca's expression changed slightly.

"You still don't understand."

The Warning

Rebeca sat down.

"Sebastián is my son."

Valeria looked confused.

"And I am his wife."

Rebeca smiled.

"For now."

The room became cold.

"I know about the documents."

Rebeca continued.

Valeria froze.

"What documents?"

A mistake.

A small one.

But Rebeca noticed.

"You know exactly which ones."

Valeria realized.

Rebeca was testing her.

She knew Valeria had discovered something.

The Truth Valeria Found

Earlier that week, Valeria had found files hidden inside Sebastián's office.

Not because she was searching.

Because she was organizing documents while waiting for him.

Inside was evidence of money transfers.

Secret accounts.

Family agreements.

But the most disturbing document was a letter.

A letter from Sebastián's father.

A letter that was never delivered.

It mentioned corruption inside Alcázar Holdings.

And one sentence stood out.

"If anything happens to me, do not trust Rebeca."

Valeria had immediately understood.

This was not about family disagreement.

This was about something much darker.

The Moment Everything Changed

Back in the living room, Rebeca leaned closer.

"You should have stayed quiet."

Valeria felt fear for the first time.

Not for herself.

For her baby.

"What are you going to do?"

Rebeca stood.

"Nothing."

A pause.

"Unless you force me."

Then the door opened.

Octavio entered.

Valeria's heart sank.

Because she realized this conversation had never been private.

It had been planned.

The Attack

The argument became louder.

Valeria demanded answers.

She asked why they had hidden the documents.

Why Sebastián's father died without revealing the truth.

Why they wanted control of her child.

Rebeca remained calm.

Until Valeria said one sentence.

"I will tell Sebastián everything."

That was when Rebeca changed.

The perfect mother disappeared.

The woman protecting the family name disappeared.

Only the woman protecting power remained.

"You don't understand what you are threatening."

Valeria stepped back.

"I understand perfectly."

She reached for her phone.

And that was when Octavio moved.

He grabbed her arm.

Valeria struggled.

"Let go of me!"

Rebeca watched.

She did not stop him.

That was the moment Valeria knew.

She was alone.

The Fall

The struggle moved toward the staircase.

Valeria remembered every second.

The fear.

The pain.

The desperate attempt to protect her baby.

She slipped.

But she did not fall by accident.

Someone pushed her.

She hit the steps.

Pain exploded through her body.

The last thing she remembered before losing consciousness…

Was Rebeca standing above her.

Not shocked.

Not afraid.

Only disappointed.

The Lie They Created

When Sebastián arrived at the hospital, everything was already arranged.

The story.

The witnesses.

The explanations.

Rebeca cried.

Octavio looked worried.

The doctor said Valeria had been unstable.

Everyone told Sebastián the same thing.

"She needs help."

"She is under stress."

"She imagined things."

And Sebastián believed them.

That was the part Valeria could never forgive.

Not because he caused the pain.

Because he allowed himself to believe she deserved it.

The Recording

After Valeria finished speaking, Sebastián could barely breathe.

"I failed you."

Valeria looked away.

"You did."

The honesty hurt.

But he accepted it.

Then Mateo entered.

He held a small device.

"We found something else."

He pressed play.

A recording.

From that night.

Rebeca's voice.

Clear.

Cold.

"Once she loses the baby, everything becomes easier."

Sebastián froze.

The recording continued.

Octavio asked:

"What if Sebastián finds out?"

Rebeca answered:

"He won't."

A pause.

"He never chooses her over us."

The room went silent.

Sebastián closed his eyes.

For three years, his mother believed she knew him.

She believed he would always choose her.

But she made one mistake.

She underestimated what a man becomes when he finally realizes he almost lost the woman he loved.

Sebastián looked at Valeria.

"I promise you."

His voice shook.

"They will never touch you or our child again."

But neither of them knew…

The Alcázar family still had one final secret.

A secret hidden by Sebastián's own father.

May you like

A secret that would reveal why the baby was truly the target.
