Chapter 12 — The Enemy Behind the Curtain

Chapter 12 — The Enemy Behind the Curtain
The warehouse went black.
Not dim.
Not dark.
Black.
For three seconds, Olivia heard nothing except Victor's breathing.
Then—
A gunshot.
“Down!”
Arthur's voice came from somewhere behind her.
Olivia dropped.
Another shot cracked through the warehouse.
Glass exploded above them.
Someone screamed.
Security rushed forward.
Flashlights cut through the darkness.
“Victor!”
“I’m here!”
Olivia ran toward his voice.
She found him still tied to the chair.
Blood covered his cheek.
But he was alive.
She dropped to her knees.
“Are you hurt?”
“My shoulder.”
“Can you stand?”
“I can try.”
Russell appeared beside them and cut the restraints.
Victor struggled upright.
“Where's Graham?”
Olivia looked around.
Gone.
Of course.
She should have expected it.
The man had spent fourteen years surviving inside shadows.
He wasn't going to surrender simply because someone had finally turned on the lights.
Arthur walked toward them.
“Are you all right?”
Olivia nodded.
Then she looked at the dead monitor.
Elizabeth.
Anna.
Still alive.
Somewhere.
“Dad.”
Arthur's face hardened.
“We'll find them.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
Arthur looked at her.
“We're not going to find them.”
She picked up the broken piece of the monitor.
“We're going to make them come to us.”
The Recording
At 1:17 a.m., the federal investigators reviewed the recording.
Graham had confessed.
He had threatened Victor.
He had admitted his involvement in the succession trust.
He had confirmed his relationship with Richard.
But there was one problem.
The recording ended before Graham revealed where Elizabeth and Anna were being held.
The lead investigator, Special Agent Michael Sloan, removed his glasses.
“He knew exactly when to cut the lights.”
Olivia sat across from him.
“He planned everything.”
“Yes.”
“He knew we were recording.”
“Possibly.”
“No.”
Olivia shook her head.
“He wanted us to record him.”
Sloan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the confession wasn't the objective.”
“What was?”
She looked at the frozen image of Graham on the screen.
“Sending us a message.”
Arthur stood near the window.
“What message?”
Olivia answered:
“That Graham isn't the one in control.”
Silence.
Sloan looked at her.
“Why do you believe that?”
Olivia pointed at the monitor.
“Because he ran.”
“He escaped.”
“No.”
She leaned forward.
“He didn't escape.”
“What is the difference?”
“He was allowed to leave.”
Sloan stared at her.
Olivia continued.
“Graham had enough time to kill Victor.”
“He didn't.”
“He had enough time to shoot me.”
“He didn't.”
“He had enough time to destroy the recording.”
“He didn't.”
She looked at Arthur.
“He wanted us to keep it.”
Arthur nodded slowly.
“So someone wanted Graham alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Olivia's eyes hardened.
“To lead us somewhere.”
The Missing File
At 3:40 a.m., Russell discovered another problem.
A file had disappeared from Hartwell's central archive.
Not digitally.
Physically.
A fourteen-year-old file.
Project Curtain.
Olivia stared at the empty shelf.
“What was inside?”
Russell looked uncomfortable.
“Everything connected to the succession trust.”
“Who had access?”
“Four people.”
“Names.”
“Arthur.”
Olivia looked at her father.
“Yourself.”
“Yes.”
“Graham.”
“Missing.”
“Richard.”
“Officially, no access.”
“Officially?”
Russell hesitated.
“His name isn't on the access list.”
Olivia understood.
“Who was the fourth?”
Russell looked at the final name.
Then at Olivia.
“Elizabeth.”
Olivia's heart stopped.
“Mom.”
“Yes.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“That's impossible.”
Russell shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed to the security log.
“Her access code was used yesterday.”
Arthur stared.
“Where?”
Russell swallowed.
“Here.”
Olivia looked at the timestamp.
11:58 p.m.
The same moment she received the message.
She slowly understood.
“Mom was inside Hartwell headquarters.”
Arthur's face went pale.
“Before she disappeared.”
“No.”
Olivia pointed at the log.
“After.”
The Woman in the Security Camera
Russell pulled up the footage.
The hallway appeared.
Empty.
Then a woman walked into frame.
Dark coat.
Dark hair.
Slow steps.
Elizabeth.
She stopped in front of the archive.
Looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
Olivia stared.
“She knew.”
Arthur moved closer.
“What?”
“She knew we would watch this.”
Elizabeth entered the archive.
Three minutes later, she walked out carrying a file.
Then she turned toward the camera again.
Her lips moved.
No audio.
Olivia replayed it.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then she understood.
Elizabeth had mouthed three words.
Trust no one.
The footage ended.
Arthur whispered:
“She knew.”
Olivia turned.
“Knew what?”
“That Graham wasn't the real enemy.”
The Curtain
At 7:30 a.m., Arthur finally told Olivia about Project Curtain.
They sat alone in his private office.
No lawyers.
No security.
No board members.
Only father and daughter.
Arthur opened an old file.
Inside was a list of names.
Olivia scanned it.
“Graham Mercer.”
“Yes.”
“Richard Vale.”
“Yes.”
“Eleanor Hayes.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel Hayes.”
Arthur nodded.
“Elizabeth.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the final name.
Blank.
“Who's this?”
Arthur's expression became distant.
“The person who created Project Curtain.”
Olivia looked at him.
“You don't know?”
“I knew.”
“Then tell me.”
Arthur closed the file.
“I haven't seen him in fourteen years.”
“Who?”
Arthur looked at the window.
“The man who taught Richard how to disappear.”
Olivia felt a chill.
“His name?”
Arthur finally answered.
“Silas Hart.”
She stared.
“Hart?”
“Yes.”
“Related to us?”
Arthur nodded.
“Your grandfather's younger brother.”
Olivia froze.
“I thought he died.”
“He was declared dead.”
“Was he?”
Arthur didn't answer.
Olivia stood.
“So the enemy is family.”
Arthur's voice was quiet.
“The enemy has always been family.”
Silas
Silas Hart had been the forgotten son.
Arthur's uncle.
The younger brother nobody mentioned.
Born brilliant.
Raised angry.
He had believed the Hartwell fortune should have been his.
But their grandfather chose Arthur's father.
Silas disappeared.
Then strange things began happening.
Companies collapsed.
Competitors vanished.
Executives changed sides.
People who challenged the Hart family suddenly discovered tax investigations, lawsuits, or scandals waiting for them.
Arthur had always suspected Silas.
But suspicion wasn't proof.
Then fourteen years ago, Silas returned.
Not openly.
He created a network.
Richard.
Graham.
Eleanor.
And others.
Project Curtain.
Its purpose was simple.
Never attack the Hartwell empire directly.
Control the people inside it.
Control the heirs.
Control the information.
Control the succession.
Then wait.
Olivia stared at the documents.
“So Victor was part of the plan.”
“Yes.”
“Mom was part of the plan.”
“No.”
Arthur's voice hardened.
“Your mother was the person who discovered it.”
“And Daniel?”
“Daniel helped her.”
“Then why did they disappear?”
Arthur looked at the floor.
“Because Silas discovered them.”
Victor's Memory
At noon, Victor sat alone in the hospital.
His shoulder had been treated.
His face was bruised.
But his mind was somewhere else.
He couldn't stop remembering.
Fourteen years earlier.
A parking garage.
Rain.
His father.
Daniel Hayes.
Daniel had been holding a folder.
Victor remembered his words now.
“You have to listen to me.”
Victor had laughed.
“You're drunk.”
Daniel had grabbed his arm.
“They're going to use you.”
Victor had pulled away.
“Who?”
Daniel had looked around.
Then whispered:
“The man behind the curtain.”
Victor remembered another voice.
Graham.
“Victor.”
Then darkness.
A needle.
A burning sensation.
And nothing.
Until years later.
Victor woke up in a hospital.
His mother told him his father had died.
She told him never to ask questions.
She told him to be grateful.
He had believed her.
Now he knew why.
Victor picked up his phone.
There was one number he needed.
Olivia.
He called.
She answered.
“What?”
“I remembered.”
Her voice changed.
“What?”
“The night my father died.”
“Tell me.”
“He wasn't killed by me.”
Olivia went silent.
“Then who?”
Victor closed his eyes.
“Graham.”
The Truth About Daniel
Olivia arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later.
Victor was sitting beside the window.
He looked exhausted.
“Tell me everything.”
Victor nodded.
“My father knew about Project Curtain.”
“How?”
“He was working with Elizabeth.”
“What were they trying to do?”
“Expose Silas.”
Olivia stared.
“Why didn't they go to Arthur?”
“They didn't trust him.”
“Why?”
Victor looked at her.
“Because Silas had someone inside Hartwell.”
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
“Then why blame my father?”
“Because he was the easiest person to manipulate.”
Olivia frowned.
“How?”
Victor hesitated.
“Elizabeth believed Arthur had ordered Daniel's death.”
Olivia froze.
“What?”
“She saw Arthur arguing with him.”
“When?”
“The night Daniel disappeared.”
Olivia looked away.
She suddenly remembered Arthur's confession.
I tried to kill him.
Victor continued.
“Daniel escaped.”
“Then what happened?”
“He was taken.”
“By Graham?”
“No.”
Victor looked at her.
“By Silas.”
The Dead Man
At 2:15 p.m., a new piece of evidence arrived.
A photograph.
Daniel Hayes.
Alive.
Taken two weeks earlier.
In the photograph, Daniel was sitting in a wheelchair.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably alive.
Olivia stared at it.
“He's alive.”
Arthur looked at the photograph.
His face went blank.
“I don't understand.”
Russell entered.
“There is more.”
He placed another photograph on the table.
Silas Hart.
Alive.
Standing beside Daniel.
Olivia felt the room spin.
“When was this taken?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“Where?”
“Zurich.”
Arthur stared.
“Silas has been alive this entire time.”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel?”
“Yes.”
Olivia looked at Victor.
“Then who died fourteen years ago?”
Victor's face went white.
“I don't know.”
Arthur whispered:
“Someone wanted us to believe Daniel was dead.”
Olivia looked at the photographs.
“And someone wanted Silas to disappear.”
She suddenly understood.
“Richard.”
Arthur looked at her.
“What?”
“Richard didn't build the network.”
“No.”
“He inherited it.”
“Yes.”
“From Silas.”
Arthur nodded.
“But Silas never disappeared.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Then Richard has been working for Silas all these years.”
The Call From Elizabeth
At 4:01 p.m., Olivia's phone rang.
Elizabeth.
Olivia answered immediately.
“Mom.”
Silence.
Then:
“Are you alone?”
“Yes.”
“Don't lie.”
Olivia looked around.
“No one is here.”
Elizabeth sighed.
“Good.”
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Is Anna with you?”
“Yes.”
“Is she safe?”
“For now.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
“Mom, who is Silas?”
Silence.
Then Elizabeth whispered:
“You found him.”
“Yes.”
“He's coming for you.”
“Why?”
“Because you're the one thing he couldn't control.”
Olivia frowned.
“What?”
“You.”
“I don't understand.”
Elizabeth's voice trembled.
“Silas didn't want Victor.”
“He wanted me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather left something behind.”
Olivia froze.
“What?”
“A key.”
“To what?”
“The Hartwell vault.”
Olivia's heart began pounding.
“What vault?”
Elizabeth answered:
“The original one.”
“What is inside?”
Elizabeth whispered:
“The truth about who owns Hartwell Group.”
The line went silent.
“Mom?”
No answer.
“Mom!”
The call had ended.
The Vault
Arthur was waiting when Olivia returned.
She walked into his office.
“Where is the original Hartwell vault?”
Arthur stared.
“Who told you?”
“Mom.”
He closed his eyes.
“Of course.”
“Where?”
Arthur stood.
“There's no vault.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Don't lie to me.”
“I am not.”
“Then what is underneath the old Hartwell estate?”
Arthur froze.
Olivia knew.
“You've been there.”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“A room.”
“What room?”
Arthur hesitated.
“The place where your grandfather kept the founding documents.”
“Why haven't I ever seen it?”
“Because it was sealed.”
“Why?”
“Because of Silas.”
Olivia understood.
“Then that's where we're going.”
Arthur shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if Silas wants you to open it…”
He looked at her.
“…then the vault is a trap.”
Olivia smiled faintly.
“So is everything else.”
The Enemy Behind the Curtain
That night, Olivia returned to the old Hartwell estate.
The house had been empty for years.
Dust covered the floors.
Paint peeled from the walls.
The place felt less like a home than a grave.
Arthur followed.
Victor came behind them.
Russell remained outside with security.
Olivia stood in the old library.
She remembered the stories her father had told her.
Her grandfather had built the first Hartwell business here.
Every major decision had been made in this room.
She ran her fingers across the fireplace.
Nothing.
She checked the bookshelves.
Nothing.
Victor noticed something.
“Wait.”
He pointed to a painting.
A portrait of Arthur's father.
Behind it was a small metal plate.
Olivia removed it.
A keypad appeared.
Arthur stared.
“I haven't seen that in years.”
Olivia looked at him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“What is the code?”
Arthur shook his head.
“I don't remember.”
Victor stepped closer.
“Try the date.”
Olivia entered the family founding year.
Wrong.
Arthur's birthday.
Wrong.
Her grandfather's death.
Wrong.
Then Olivia remembered something.
Her mother's favorite date.
The day she and Arthur first met.
She entered it.
The lock clicked.
Arthur looked shocked.
The wall opened.
Behind it was a staircase.
They descended.
One floor.
Then another.
At the bottom was a steel door.
No keypad.
No lock.
Only a handprint scanner.
Olivia stepped forward.
The scanner lit up.
IDENTITY REQUIRED
She placed her hand against it.
Nothing happened.
Victor stepped forward.
Nothing.
Arthur tried.
Nothing.
Then Olivia noticed a second scanner.
It wasn't for a hand.
It was for blood.
She looked at Arthur.
“What is this?”
Arthur's voice was barely audible.
“Your grandfather built it for his bloodline.”
“Then why didn't it recognize me?”
Arthur looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Olivia stepped back.
The door suddenly unlocked.
Everyone froze.
A voice came from inside.
“Because you are not the child he registered.”
Olivia's blood ran cold.
The lights turned on.
An old man sat inside the vault.
White hair.
Thin face.
Cold eyes.
Arthur raised his weapon.
The man smiled.
“Hello, Arthur.”
Arthur whispered:
“Silas.”
Silas Hart stood slowly.
He looked at Olivia.
Then Victor.
Then smiled.
“So.”
His eyes returned to Olivia.
“The experiment is finally over.”
Olivia stared at him.
“You know who I am.”
Silas laughed.
“I know exactly who you are.”
“Then tell me.”
He stepped closer.
“You are not Olivia Hartwell.”
Olivia's heart stopped.
Silas smiled.
“You are the girl Elizabeth stole from me.”
Arthur raised his weapon.
“Don't.”
Silas looked at him.
“You still don't understand, nephew.”
He pointed at Olivia.
“She was never your daughter.”
Victor stared.
Olivia couldn't breathe.
Silas continued:
“She was mine.”
The room went silent.
Then another voice came from the darkness behind Silas.
“That's not true.”
Everyone turned.
Elizabeth stepped into the light.
Anna stood beside her.
Elizabeth looked directly at Olivia.
And whispered:
“Your father is not Arthur.”
Arthur's face collapsed.
Silas smiled.
“Finally.”
He looked at Olivia.
May you like
“Now we're ready to tell you who you really are.”
And the vault door slammed shut behind them.
