Chapter 14 — The Last Call

Chapter 14 — The Last Call
The lights went out.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Arthur said one word.
“Down.”
Olivia dropped behind the desk.
Victor rushed through the doorway.
Russell shouted from the hall.
“Security! Lock the building!”
A burst of emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Unforgiving.
Olivia looked at her father.
“The fourth child.”
Arthur didn't answer.
She stood.
“Dad.”
His face was pale.
“Not here.”
“You said he was dead.”
“I believed he was.”
“You believed?”
Arthur looked toward the darkened windows.
“For fourteen years.”
Olivia stepped closer.
“Then tell me who he is.”
Arthur's silence was answer enough.
Someone knew.
Someone had always known.
And whoever had sent that photograph wanted Olivia to discover the truth before Silas did.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
Don't trust Arthur.
Another followed.
He knows where your brother is.
Olivia looked up.
Arthur was watching her.
For the first time in her life, she wondered whether the man she had called Dad had been protecting her—
or protecting himself.
The Last Call
The phone rang.
Not a message.
A call.
Olivia stared at the screen.
Unknown.
She answered.
“Who is this?”
A man's breathing came through the line.
Slow.
Controlled.
Then a voice.
“You finally found the photograph.”
Olivia froze.
“Who are you?”
“You know me.”
“No, I don't.”
“You've heard my voice.”
“Where?”
A quiet laugh.
“In your father's house.”
Olivia looked at Arthur.
His face changed.
She whispered:
“Silas?”
“No.”
The voice became colder.
“I'm the reason Silas is afraid.”
Olivia's grip tightened around the phone.
“What do you want?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because you're the only one who can find him.”
“Find who?”
“Your brother.”
Olivia's heart pounded.
“Where is he?”
The caller paused.
“Closer than you think.”
Then the line went dead.
Olivia stared at the phone.
Arthur moved toward her.
“Who was it?”
She looked at him.
“Someone who knows where my brother is.”
“Did he give you a name?”
“No.”
“What did he say?”
Olivia hesitated.
Then:
“He said you're hiding something.”
Arthur's expression hardened.
“He's lying.”
“Are you?”
Arthur didn't answer.
The Fourth Child
At 1:15 a.m., they gathered in the Hartwell security room.
Every camera was being monitored.
Russell stood beside the central console.
Victor sat across from Olivia.
Elizabeth had joined them.
Anna slept upstairs under protection.
Olivia placed the photograph on the table.
“Mom.”
Elizabeth looked at it.
Her face crumpled.
“You know him.”
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Who is he?”
She whispered:
“Michael.”
Olivia stared.
“Michael Hartwell?”
Elizabeth nodded.
“His name was Michael.”
“Was?”
“He died.”
Arthur interrupted.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Arthur looked at Elizabeth.
“You never told me.”
“You weren't supposed to know.”
Olivia stood.
“You're both lying.”
Elizabeth began to cry.
Arthur looked at his daughter.
“Olivia…”
“No.”
Her voice sharpened.
“I am done being protected by lies.”
Silence.
“Tell me everything.”
Arthur sat down.
“Michael was born after you.”
Olivia frowned.
“After me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why does the photograph show him with us?”
“Because the photograph was taken years later.”
“Where?”
Arthur looked away.
“A private facility.”
Olivia's stomach tightened.
“What facility?”
Arthur answered:
“Blackwater.”
Victor's eyes widened.
“The place Graham used?”
“Yes.”
Olivia looked at Elizabeth.
“You were keeping him there?”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“Silas was.”
“Why?”
“Because Michael wasn't normal.”
Olivia's expression hardened.
“What does that mean?”
Elizabeth hesitated.
“He had a condition.”
“What condition?”
“Not physical.”
“Then what?”
“He remembered everything.”
Olivia didn't understand.
“Everything?”
“Every face.”
“Every conversation.”
“Every detail.”
Elizabeth looked at her.
“He could remember things people wanted forgotten.”
The Memory
Victor slowly stood.
“So Michael was a witness.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“To what?”
“To the night Daniel died.”
Olivia's heart stopped.
“He saw it?”
“Yes.”
“Who killed him?”
Elizabeth looked at Arthur.
Arthur whispered:
“Not Graham.”
“Then who?”
Elizabeth answered:
“Richard.”
Victor went pale.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Victor stepped back.
“No.”
Elizabeth continued.
“Daniel discovered that Richard was working for Silas.”
“He confronted him.”
“They fought.”
“Richard panicked.”
“And Daniel fell.”
“From the balcony.”
Victor covered his mouth.
“My father…”
Olivia looked at him.
“Was it an accident?”
Elizabeth nodded.
“But Silas turned it into a murder.”
“Why?”
“Because a dead man was easier to control than a witness.”
Olivia understood.
“And Michael saw everything.”
“Yes.”
“So Silas kept him.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“To protect himself.”
The Brother
At 2:04 a.m., Olivia stood outside Anna's room.
The little girl slept peacefully.
Olivia looked at her.
Her sister.
Her family.
The word still felt strange.
She had spent seven years believing she had no family.
Now she had discovered a father.
A mother.
A sister.
A brother.
And an uncle who wanted to destroy them.
She sat beside Anna's bed.
Anna opened her eyes.
“Olivia?”
“Yes.”
“Are you leaving?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
Olivia smiled.
“I promise.”
Anna closed her eyes again.
“Michael will come.”
Olivia froze.
“What did you say?”
Anna opened her eyes.
“Michael.”
“Do you know him?”
Anna nodded.
“He talks to me.”
“When?”
“At night.”
Olivia's heart raced.
“What does he say?”
Anna smiled.
“He says you're coming.”
“Coming where?”
Anna pointed toward the window.
“There.”
Olivia looked outside.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message.
Come alone.
A location appeared.
Chicago Children's Hospital.
Floor 4.
Room 417.
Olivia stared.
Anna whispered:
“He's waiting.”
Room 417
At 2:47 a.m., Olivia entered the hospital.
She told Russell to stay outside.
She went alone.
The fourth floor was almost empty.
Room 417 stood at the end of the corridor.
The door was open.
Olivia stepped inside.
A boy sat beside the window.
No.
Not a boy.
A young man.
Twenty-three.
Dark hair.
Pale face.
A small scar above his eyebrow.
He turned.
Olivia stopped breathing.
She knew those eyes.
Not because she had seen them before.
Because she had seen them in the mirror.
He smiled.
“Hello, Olivia.”
Her voice failed.
He stood.
“I've been waiting a long time.”
“Michael?”
“Yes.”
She stared at him.
“You're alive.”
“I know.”
“Why did everyone say you were dead?”
“Because they needed you to believe it.”
“Who?”
Michael looked toward the door.
“Everyone.”
Olivia stepped closer.
“Are you my brother?”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
She began to cry.
Michael didn't move.
Then Olivia crossed the room and hugged him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Twenty-three years of missing memories seemed to collapse into one embrace.
Then Michael whispered:
“You shouldn't have come.”
Olivia pulled away.
“Why?”
“Because they followed you.”
The door slammed shut.
Olivia turned.
Four men entered.
Michael grabbed her hand.
“Run.”
The Escape
They ran through the hospital corridor.
Security alarms erupted.
Michael knew exactly where to go.
Left.
Stairs.
Down two floors.
Service corridor.
Exit.
Olivia followed.
“How do you know this place?”
“I remember.”
“You've been here before?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Fourteen years ago.”
She stared.
“You were a child.”
“I remember everything.”
They reached the parking garage.
A black SUV waited.
Michael stopped.
“That's not ours.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Then whose is it?”
The driver's door opened.
Elizabeth stepped out.
Olivia froze.
“Mom?”
Elizabeth looked terrified.
“Get in.”
Michael opened the rear door.
Olivia climbed inside.
“Where are we going?”
Elizabeth started the engine.
“Somewhere Silas can't find us.”
Michael shook his head.
“He already knows.”
Elizabeth looked at him through the mirror.
“No.”
Michael's expression darkened.
“He knew before we left.”
The Safe House
At 4:20 a.m., they arrived at an old house outside the city.
Arthur was already there.
Olivia stepped out.
She stared at him.
“You knew.”
Arthur nodded.
“I knew Michael was alive.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Her face hardened.
“You lied to me for three years.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“From Silas.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
Arthur stepped closer.
“Olivia.”
“You weren't protecting me.”
She looked at Michael.
“You were protecting him.”
Arthur didn't deny it.
Michael spoke quietly.
“He was.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Why?”
Michael answered:
“Because I know what happened in the vault.”
Everyone fell silent.
“What happened?”
Michael looked at Arthur.
“Tell her.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Michael…”
“Tell her.”
Arthur whispered:
“You weren't taken from Silas.”
Olivia froze.
“What?”
Michael nodded.
“You were given to him.”
The Betrayal
Olivia stared at Arthur.
“By whom?”
Arthur's voice broke.
“Your grandfather.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“Because he believed Silas could protect you.”
Olivia shook her head.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if you know what happened before you were born.”
“What happened?”
Arthur looked at Elizabeth.
She nodded.
Arthur continued.
“Your grandfather discovered that Silas had a private network.”
“He feared Silas would eventually destroy the company.”
“So he made a deal.”
Olivia whispered:
“What deal?”
“Silas would disappear.”
“And in exchange?”
Arthur looked at her.
“Michael.”
Olivia froze.
“Michael was the price.”
Michael's expression didn't change.
“My grandfather gave me to Silas.”
“Yes.”
“And me?”
Arthur shook his head.
“You were supposed to remain with us.”
Olivia's eyes narrowed.
“Then why did Mom steal me?”
Elizabeth stepped forward.
“Because I learned what Silas planned.”
“What?”
“To raise Michael as a weapon.”
Michael looked away.
“He succeeded.”
The Man Who Remembers Everything
Michael sat down.
“I remember everything.”
He looked at Olivia.
“The first room.”
“The doctors.”
“The voices.”
“The men who came at night.”
“The files.”
“The recordings.”
“The names.”
Olivia sat opposite him.
“What names?”
Michael looked at her.
“Everyone.”
He began listing them.
“Graham.”
“Richard.”
“Eleanor.”
“Thomas.”
“Silas.”
Then he paused.
“Arthur.”
Olivia's heart tightened.
“What did Dad do?”
Michael looked at Arthur.
“He killed someone.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Who?”
Michael answered:
“Your grandfather.”
Olivia stood.
“What?”
Arthur looked at her.
“He's lying.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“You don't remember correctly.”
“I remember everything.”
“You were a child.”
“I remember the blood.”
Silence.
Michael continued.
“I remember Arthur standing over him.”
Olivia looked at her father.
“Did you kill Grandpa?”
Arthur's eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
Michael stood.
“Then who did?”
Arthur couldn't answer.
Michael whispered:
“Mom.”
Elizabeth began to cry.
Elizabeth's Confession
Elizabeth sat down.
“I did.”
Olivia stared.
“You killed him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He was going to kill Michael.”
“Why?”
“Because Michael knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That Silas wasn't the mastermind.”
Olivia froze.
“Then who?”
Elizabeth looked at Arthur.
Arthur whispered:
“I don't know.”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“You do.”
“No.”
“You've always known.”
“Elizabeth.”
She turned to Olivia.
“The man behind the curtain isn't Silas.”
Olivia felt cold.
“Who is it?”
Elizabeth whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Olivia stared.
“But he's dead.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“He is.”
“Then how?”
“He created the network.”
“Silas inherited it.”
“Richard inherited it from Silas.”
“Graham inherited it from Richard.”
Olivia's voice shook.
“Then who controls it now?”
Elizabeth looked at her.
“You.”
Olivia froze.
“What?”
“You were never the victim.”
Michael stepped closer.
“You were the final heir.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
Elizabeth continued:
“Your grandfather built the entire system around one purpose.”
“What purpose?”
“To find the person capable of controlling it.”
Olivia whispered:
“And that person is me.”
“Yes.”
The Last Call
At 5:03 a.m., every phone in the room rang simultaneously.
Arthur.
Elizabeth.
Victor.
Michael.
Olivia.
Five phones.
One call.
Olivia answered.
Silence.
Then a familiar voice.
Graham.
“You finally understand.”
Olivia's face hardened.
“Where are you?”
“Everywhere.”
“What do you want?”
“Your brother.”
“No.”
“Then I'll take your sister.”
Olivia froze.
Anna.
Graham laughed softly.
“You have ten minutes.”
“Where?”
“Your father's house.”
Olivia looked at Arthur.
Graham continued:
“Come alone.”
“You know I won't.”
“I know.”
“Then why ask?”
“Because I don't need you alone.”
“What?”
“You only need to bring yourself.”
The line went dead.
Olivia stared at the phone.
Michael spoke.
“He's lying.”
“About what?”
“Anna isn't at the house.”
Olivia looked at him.
“How do you know?”
Michael closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“Because I can hear her.”
Everyone went silent.
A faint sound came through the phone.
A child's voice.
“Olivia.”
Her blood ran cold.
“Anna?”
A whisper.
“Help me.”
Then the line disconnected.
Olivia stood.
Arthur grabbed her arm.
“Don't go.”
She pulled away.
“I have to.”
“No.”
“Dad.”
“You don't know what you're walking into.”
Olivia looked at him.
“For seven years, I thought I had nothing.”
She picked up her coat.
“Now I have a family.”
She looked at Michael.
“At least one brother.”
Then Elizabeth.
“A mother.”
Then Arthur.
“A father.”
Finally, she looked toward the door.
“And a sister.”
Arthur stepped in front of her.
“You're not going alone.”
Olivia smiled faintly.
“I wasn't planning to.”
Behind them, Michael stood.
“I know where Graham is.”
Everyone turned.
“Where?”
Michael looked at Olivia.
“Underneath the old Hartwell estate.”
Arthur's face changed.
“The original vault.”
Michael nodded.
“There's another level.”
Olivia stared.
“Another?”
“Yes.”
“What is there?”
Michael's expression became cold.
“The room where they raised me.”
He looked at Arthur.
“And the room where they kept the fourth child.”
Olivia's heart stopped.
“Fourth child?”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
He looked directly at her.
“There was never a fourth child.”
Silence.
“The photograph was altered.”
Olivia stared.
“Then who was behind the curtain?”
Michael whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
The phone rang again.
This time, Olivia answered.
A man's voice spoke.
Not Graham.
Not Silas.
Not Richard.
A voice she had never heard.
But somehow recognized.
“Olivia.”
She froze.
The voice continued:
“You've spent your whole life looking for the man behind the curtain.”
A pause.
“Now look behind you.”
Olivia slowly turned.
Arthur stood there.
Holding a gun.
Pointed at Michael.
The room went silent.
Arthur's eyes filled with tears.
“I'm sorry.”
May you like
Olivia's blood ran cold.
And for the first time in her life, she wondered whether her father had ever truly been on her side.
