CHAPTER 2 — THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 2 — THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

No one spoke.

Not Jackson.

Not his mother.

Not the twenty guests who had watched a dinner become a crime scene.

Blood continued to run down my neck as I held the phone to my ear.

The emergency operator answered calmly.

"911. What is your emergency?"

"My husband threw a ceramic plate at my head."

"I've suffered a head injury."

"There are multiple witnesses."

"I need medical assistance and police."

Jackson finally found his voice.

"Hang up."

His words sounded weaker now.

"This is a family matter."

I looked at him.

"No."

"It's a criminal matter."

His father stood abruptly.

"We can settle this privately."

"You'll embarrass the family."

I pressed a clean napkin against my temple.

"The only person who embarrassed this family..."

"...is the man who threw the plate."

Within minutes, flashing red and blue lights reflected through the dining room windows.

The laughter that had filled the house earlier was gone.

Two police officers entered alongside paramedics.

The lead officer looked around the room.

"Who called?"

"I did," I answered.

The paramedic gently moved my blood-soaked hair aside.

"You'll likely need stitches."

As she examined the wound, the officer turned toward the guests.

"I'm going to need individual statements from everyone here."

Several people looked at the floor.

Jackson's mother stepped forward.

"It was an accident."

The officer glanced at the shattered plate still scattered across the table and floor.

"Ma'am..."

"Plates don't accidentally fly across a room."

A teenage cousin quietly raised his hand.

"I recorded part of it."

Every head turned.

He held up his phone with trembling fingers.

"I started filming because they were yelling."

May you like

The officer accepted the phone as evidence.

Jackson's face lost all color.
