CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET THEY NEVER KNEW

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET THEY NEVER KNEW

Three weeks later, the criminal case was underway.

The video had captured everything.

The argument.

The demand for my apartment.

Jackson standing.

The plate leaving his hand.

There was no dispute about what happened.

But that wasn't the only surprise waiting for his family.

My attorney placed a thick folder on the conference table.

"I believe your clients should review these documents."

Jackson frowned.

"What documents?"

"The prenuptial agreement."

His mother laughed.

"There wasn't one."

"There was," my attorney replied.

"You simply never asked to read it."

I had signed it before our wedding.

Jackson had signed it too.

Without paying attention.

One clause stood out in bold print.

Any spouse convicted of committing an act of domestic violence against the other forfeits all claims to marital property or financial support permitted under the agreement.

Jackson stared at the page.

"I never read this."

"I know," I answered quietly.

"You were too busy trusting everyone except the person you married."

May you like

His attorney slowly closed the file.

There was nothing left to argue.
