Chapter 13 — The Man Behind Carmen

Chapter 13 — The Man Behind Carmen

The voice came from beneath the house.

My father's voice.

Or something that sounded exactly like it.

I stood at the top of the hidden staircase, unable to move.

Behind me, Carmen said nothing.

Marco didn't move either.

Even Rafael seemed suddenly uneasy.

That frightened me.

These people had spent years manipulating everyone around them.

But now they were afraid.

Afraid of whoever was waiting below.

I looked at Elena.

She whispered:

"Don't go down alone."

I nodded.

Then I started descending.

One step.

Two.

Three.

The air became colder.

The walls changed from polished stone to unfinished concrete.

At the bottom was a corridor.

And at the end of it was a steel door.

The door was open.

Inside was a room filled with monitors.

Cameras.

Hard drives.

Boxes of documents.

And in the center of the room sat an old man.

His back was toward me.

He wore a dark suit.

His gray hair was neatly combed.

His hands rested on a wooden cane.

I stopped breathing.

"Who are you?"

The man slowly turned.

My heart stopped.

He had my father's eyes.

Not similar.

Not close.

The same.

He smiled.

"You're finally here."

I couldn't speak.

"Who are you?"

He looked at me.

"My name is Richard Bradley."

My father's name.

The room seemed to tilt.

"That's impossible."

He smiled sadly.

"Yes."

I stepped backward.

"My father was Michael Bradley."

Richard nodded.

"So was I."

Elena raised her weapon.

"Hands where I can see them."

Richard didn't move.

"I'm not your enemy."

"Then who are you?"

He looked at me.

"Your father's twin brother."

Silence.

I stared at him.

"My father had a twin?"

"Identical."

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Because your father made sure nobody could."

I looked toward the door.

Carmen was standing there.

Her face was pale.

"You knew."

Richard looked at her.

"Of course she knew."

I turned.

"Carmen."

She didn't answer.

"You knew Richard was alive."

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Twenty years."

My blood ran cold.

"Twenty years?"

She nodded.

"Why?"

"Because your father needed someone to disappear."

Richard smiled bitterly.

"He needed me to become the dead brother."

I stared at him.

"Explain."

Richard leaned back.

"Your father and I were identical twins, but we couldn't have been more different."

"How?"

"He wanted power."

"I wanted out."

"Out of what?"

"The company."

"The Bellinis."

"The money."

"And the people your father destroyed."

I swallowed.

"Then why did you help him?"

"I didn't."

He looked toward Carmen.

"She did."

Carmen lowered her eyes.

Richard continued.

"Your father used my identity to move money."

"Why?"

"Because I was clean."

I felt sick.

"He used your name?"

"For years."

"Did you know?"

"I discovered it too late."

"What happened?"

"He framed me."

"For what?"

"Fraud."

I stared.

"He made everyone believe I stole from the company."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Then why didn't you fight?"

Richard laughed softly.

"Because your father had already destroyed the evidence."

I looked around the room.

"This is the archive."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did you stay here?"

"Because someone had to protect it."

"From whom?"

"Everyone."

I thought about Carmen.

"She worked for you?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"Then who?"

"Your father."

My stomach tightened.

"My father was dead."

"Not when the archive was created."

"When was that?"

"Three days before he died."

I stared.

"He knew he was going to die."

"Yes."

"Who was going to kill him?"

Richard looked at me.

"He wasn't murdered."

I froze.

"What?"

"Your mother told you he was poisoned."

"She said he was."

"She was wrong."

"She said she watched him die."

"She did."

"Then what happened?"

Richard's voice became quiet.

"Your father chose to die."

I stared.

"He poisoned himself."

"Why?"

"Because he knew the Bellinis were coming."

"And he couldn't stop them?"

"Not anymore."

I remembered Lucía's words.

Your father poisoned himself.

He chose which child to save.

I looked at Richard.

"Which child?"

He didn't answer.

"Who did he save?"

Richard looked toward the monitors.

A live feed showed three children.

Camila.

Mateo.

Samuel.

Then another screen came alive.

A fourth room.

An empty bed.

I frowned.

"Who was there?"

Richard didn't answer.

"Who?"

He finally said:

"The child your father never admitted existed."

I felt cold.

"Lucía?"

"No."

"Then who?"

He reached for a file.

The label read:

PROJECT FOUR.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman.

Maybe twenty-four.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A scar beneath her left eye.

I stared.

I knew her.

I had seen her before.

At the hotel.

At the courthouse.

In old photographs.

She had always been standing in the background.

I whispered:

"Valentina."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

My stomach dropped.

"She's not just Daniel's mistress."

"No."

"Then who is she?"

Richard looked at me.

"Your father's daughter."

I couldn't breathe.

"No."

"Yes."

"Lucía is his daughter."

"So is Valentina."

I stared at him.

"How many children did my father have?"

Richard smiled sadly.

"More than anyone knows."

I looked at the screens.

Camila.

Mateo.

Samuel.

Valentina.

Lucía.

My family had become a maze of bloodlines.

But one question mattered.

"Why did Valentina take Mateo?"

Richard's expression hardened.

"Because she believed he was the key to her inheritance."

"Who told her that?"

"Carmen."

I turned toward Carmen.

She was crying.

"I didn't know."

"You lied."

"I believed him."

"Believed who?"

Richard answered.

"Me."

I froze.

"You?"

Richard nodded.

"I told Carmen the trust required Mateo."

"Why?"

"To keep the Bellinis away from Samuel."

I stared.

"You used my son as bait."

"I protected him."

"You destroyed my family."

"I saved one child."

"At the cost of another."

Richard looked down.

"I know."

Carmen stepped forward.

"I didn't know they would take him."

"You paid Sofia."

"To hide him."

"You separated him from me."

"Because I was told you were dangerous."

I stared at her.

"By whom?"

She looked at Richard.

"By him."

I turned toward Richard.

"Why did you tell her that?"

"Because your father told me to."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone blames my father."

Richard shook his head.

"Not this time."

He looked directly at me.

"Your father was trying to protect you."

"By destroying me?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"He knew the Bellinis wanted you."

I froze.

"Why me?"

"Because you were the legal heir."

"But I was only a child."

"Exactly."

Richard opened another file.

Inside were photographs.

Me as a child.

Me at school.

Me graduating.

Me getting married.

Me holding Camila.

Me holding Mateo.

I stared.

"Why do you have these?"

"Your father tracked you."

"For protection?"

"Mostly."

"Mostly?"

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Sometimes he watched you because he was afraid you would discover the truth."

"What truth?"

He opened another document.

A corporate agreement.

I read the first line.

Bellini-Bradley Succession Agreement.

My stomach tightened.

"This is a marriage contract."

Richard nodded.

"Your father promised you to the Bellini family."

I stared.

"What?"

"Before you were born."

My hands shook.

"To whom?"

"Marco Bellini's son."

I looked at Marco.

His face was expressionless.

"You knew?"

He nodded.

"Everyone knew."

I couldn't breathe.

"My entire marriage to Daniel..."

"Was never supposed to happen."

I looked at Carmen.

"Did you know?"

"Yes."

"Teresa?"

"Yes."

"Daniel?"

Richard answered.

"Yes."

"Lucía?"

"Yes."

"Everyone knew except me."

Richard nodded.

"You were the only person who wasn't told."

I closed my eyes.

My whole life had been a plan.

My marriage.

My children.

The trust.

The lies.

And now the estate.

But then I remembered something.

"What about Camila?"

Richard went still.

"What about her?"

"The DNA."

He looked at me.

"She is my daughter."

"Yes."

"But she wasn't supposed to be."

Silence.

Richard finally nodded.

"Correct."

"Then whose child is she?"

He didn't answer.

"Richard."

He looked toward the screen showing Camila.

"She belongs to someone else."

"Who?"

"The Bellinis."

My blood froze.

"No."

"Your father knew."

"How?"

"Because the hospital switched the records."

"Who switched them?"

Richard looked at Carmen.

"Carmen."

I turned.

Carmen began crying.

"I was told the child would be safer."

"You stole my daughter."

"I saved her."

"You stole her identity."

"I gave her a life."

"Whose life?"

Carmen whispered:

"Yours."

I couldn't understand.

"What?"

"Your father wanted the Bellinis to believe their child was dead."

I stared.

"Their child?"

Carmen nodded.

"Camila was born to a Bellini woman."

"Who?"

"Valentina."

My blood went cold.

I looked at the monitor.

Camila.

Then at the photograph of Valentina.

"No."

Richard nodded.

"Camila is Valentina's daughter."

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel's child.

Valentina's child.

My daughter.

The child I had raised for seven years.

Everything I believed about my family was collapsing.

A sound came from the monitors.

An alarm.

Richard stood immediately.

"What is that?"

Elena moved toward the screens.

"Someone opened the east gate."

Richard's face changed.

"Who?"

The security feed appeared.

Black SUVs.

Dozens of men.

Marco looked at the screen.

"They found us."

"Who?"

"The Bellinis."

Richard turned to me.

"You need to leave."

"I'm not leaving my children."

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

"They aren't here for the estate."

"What do they want?"

Richard looked at Samuel.

"They want him."

Samuel stepped backward.

"Why?"

Richard answered:

"Because Samuel is the only person who can legally break the Bellini claim."

I stared.

"How?"

"His DNA."

"What about it?"

"It proves the Bellini bloodline."

"And that gives them ownership."

"Yes."

"But why would they need him alive?"

Richard's face hardened.

"Because the trust requires his testimony."

I looked at Samuel.

A child.

Eight years old.

Carrying the evidence that could destroy an empire.

Then another alarm sounded.

The basement doors began locking automatically.

Richard grabbed my arm.

"Too late."

The lights flickered.

Someone had cut the power.

Gunshots echoed upstairs.

Camila screamed through the monitor.

"Mommy!"

I ran toward the stairs.

Richard stopped me.

"Wait."

"My children are up there."

"The house is surrounded."

"I don't care."

"You'll get yourself killed."

"Then help me."

Richard looked at me.

For a moment, I saw my father's eyes in his face.

Then he nodded.

He opened a hidden cabinet.

Inside were weapons.

Communication devices.

And a small metal case.

He handed it to me.

"What's this?"

"The original trust."

I stared.

"Why give it to me?"

"Because you're the only person who can open it."

"Why?"

"Because your father made one final change."

"What?"

Richard looked toward Samuel.

"He removed himself from the trust."

"Then who became trustee?"

"You."

I froze.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because your father knew everyone would come for the money."

"And?"

"He wanted them to discover there was nothing to steal."

I opened the case.

Inside was a single document.

I read the final clause.

Upon my death, control of the Bradley Estate shall transfer to Mariana Bradley, provided she refuses all coercion and protects every surviving descendant.

My hands shook.

That was why they needed my signature.

Without me, they couldn't access the estate.

Without the estate, they couldn't reach the archive.

Without the archive, they couldn't prove ownership.

And without the children...

the trust couldn't activate.

I looked at Richard.

"They've been trying to force me to sign."

"Yes."

"But they already have a forged signature."

"It isn't valid."

"Then why are they so desperate?"

"Because they're running out of time."

"Why?"

Richard looked at the clock.

"At midnight, the trust activates automatically."

I stared.

"Tonight?"

"Yes."

"And what happens?"

"The Bellini claim disappears."

"Completely?"

"If all four descendants are alive."

I looked at Samuel.

"Four."

Richard nodded.

"You."

"Camila."

"Mateo."

"And Lucía."

My heart stopped.

"Then Valentina?"

"Not a beneficiary."

"Even though Camila is her daughter?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because your father deliberately separated biological parentage from legal inheritance."

I understood.

He had built the trust like a fortress.

But there was still one problem.

"Where is Lucía?"

Richard looked at the monitor.

His face went pale.

"She never made it here."

"What?"

"She was supposed to."

"Where is she?"

A new message appeared on the security system.

WE HAVE LUCÍA.

Then another.

WE ALSO HAVE DANIEL.

Then:

BRING US SAMUEL.

The final message appeared in red.

OR THEY DIE.

I stared at the screen.

Richard whispered:

"They've taken the one person who can unlock the second half of the trust."

"Who?"

"Lucía."

I looked at Samuel.

Then Camila.

Then Mateo.

Three children were trapped upstairs.

Two people I loved were prisoners.

The estate was surrounded.

And midnight was less than an hour away.

I turned toward Richard.

"How do we get them out?"

He looked at me.

"There is one way."

"What?"

"You surrender yourself."

I stared.

"Me?"

"They want the heir."

"And if I go?"

"They'll take you to the Bellinis."

"What happens then?"

Richard's expression became grim.

"They'll force you to choose which child lives."

I felt the blood leave my face.

"Which child?"

He looked at me.

"The one carrying the real inheritance."

"Which one?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he handed me another envelope.

My father's handwriting.

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

Mariana, if they ever force you to choose between your children, choose the one who asks you to save the others.

I looked toward the monitor.

Camila was crying.

Mateo was holding Samuel's hand.

Three children.

One choice.

And suddenly I understood.

My father hadn't built the trust to determine which child deserved the fortune.

He had built it to determine which child would sacrifice themselves for the others.

Before I could say anything, the basement door exploded inward.

Men in black entered.

Richard pushed me behind him.

Carmen screamed.

Marco raised his hands.

And from the darkness came a voice I knew.

Daniel.

"Mariana!"

I turned.

He was being dragged into the room by two armed men.

Blood covered his face.

But he was alive.

Behind him stood Lucía.

Her hands were tied.

And beside her was Valentina.

Holding a gun.

She looked directly at me.

"I'm sorry."

Then she pointed the weapon toward Samuel.

"Give me my son."

I stared at her.

"My son?"

She nodded.

"Samuel is not your son."

My heart stopped.

"Then whose is he?"

Valentina's eyes filled with tears.

"Mine."

May you like

The room went silent.

And somewhere upstairs, the clock began to strike midnight.
