Part 3: The Price of Pride

Part 3: The Price of Pride
By the next morning, every financial newspaper carried the same headline.
WARD GLOBAL REMOVES CEO AFTER EMERGENCY BOARD VOTE.
Employees arriving at headquarters watched in disbelief as Daniel's name disappeared from the executive directory.
His office was already being cleared.
The framed awards.
The photographs.
The custom nameplate.
Gone.
Inside the boardroom, Elena addressed the senior leadership team.
"For years, this company succeeded because thousands of people worked with honesty while one person accepted all the credit."
She smiled gently.
"That changes today."
Her first decision surprised everyone.
Every employee who had been overlooked for promotions under Daniel's leadership would receive an independent performance review.
Departments previously ignored would receive funding.
Executive bonuses would be tied to team performance rather than individual recognition.
The applause that followed was genuine.
Later that afternoon, Patricia arrived demanding a meeting.
"You owe my son another chance."
Elena calmly folded her hands.
"I owed him loyalty."
"I gave him four years of it."
"He owed me respect."
Patricia lowered her eyes.
For once, she had no cruel words left.
Outside the building, Chloe quietly returned the engagement ring Daniel had given her.
"I thought I was marrying a powerful man."
Daniel looked at the ring in his hand.
"You were."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I was marrying borrowed power."

She walked away without looking back.
Daniel stood alone on the sidewalk, finally understanding that status built on someone else's trust can disappear in a single day.
