Chapter 4 – Lauren's Lies

Chapter 4 – Lauren's Lies
The first headline appeared at exactly 9:47 a.m.
NEXUSCORE CEO UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ALLEGED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Within minutes, it was followed by another.
BOARD QUESTIONS VALIDITY OF CEO'S CONTROLLING SHARES
By ten o'clock, every major financial network had interrupted its regular programming.
Inside NexusCore headquarters, no one was talking about quarterly earnings anymore.
Everyone was talking about Matthew Hayes.
Matthew stood alone in his corner office, staring through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Midtown Manhattan.
Only yesterday, the skyline had looked like proof of everything he had accomplished.
Today, it looked like a city waiting to watch him fall.
His phone hadn't stopped ringing for nearly an hour.
Investors.
Lawyers.
Board members.
Public relations consultants.
He ignored every call except one.
Lauren.
He answered immediately.
"Where are you?"
Her voice was unusually calm.
"Home."
"Stay there."
"I'm coming."
"I don't think that's a good idea."
Matthew frowned.
"What?"
"My building is full of reporters."
"So?"
"So maybe you shouldn't be seen here."
His jaw tightened.
"Lauren."
"I'm just being practical."
"I need you."
There was a long silence.
"I'll call you later."
The line went dead.
Matthew stared at the phone.
It was the first time Lauren had ever ended a conversation before he did.
Across the city...
Lauren Thorne sat in the breakfast room of her Hamptons house, still wearing yesterday's silk robe.
The television played silently in the background.
Every channel showed Matthew's photograph.
Her lawyer, Denise Carter, placed a folder on the table.
"You need to make a decision."
Lauren looked up.
"What kind of decision?"
"Whether you're going down with him."
Lauren's fingers tightened around her coffee cup.
"I didn't do anything."
Denise raised an eyebrow.
"Didn't you?"
Lauren's confidence wavered.
"I wasn't the one holding the cane."
"No."
Denise agreed.
"But your name appears in company expense reports."
Lauren looked confused.
"So?"
"So does the Hamptons property."
Lauren's face lost its color.
"...What?"
Denise slid several printed pages across the table.
"Matthew purchased this house using shell companies connected to NexusCore."
Lauren quickly scanned the documents.
Every payment.
Every renovation.
Every furniture invoice.
Everything had been charged to corporate accounts.
She whispered,
"He told me they were executive housing expenses."
Denise looked at her carefully.
"Did you believe him?"
Lauren didn't answer.
Because the truth was...
She hadn't cared enough to ask.
Meanwhile, Clare sat in her hospital room as Henderson placed another file on the table.
"The financial investigators recovered these this morning."
She opened the folder.
Restaurant receipts.
Luxury hotel reservations.
Private jet manifests.
Jewelry purchases.
Each page revealed another secret.
Another lie.
Another betrayal.
One receipt made her stop breathing.
Marea Restaurant
Two Guests
Reservation: Matthew Hayes & Lauren Thorne
The date.
Their seventh wedding anniversary.
Clare remembered that night vividly.
Matthew had called her just before sunset.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart."
"The board scheduled an emergency strategy meeting."
"I'll make it up to you."
She had eaten dinner alone.
A slice of cheesecake waited untouched in their refrigerator until it spoiled three days later.
Now she knew why.
Jonathan watched her expression carefully.
"You don't have to read all of it."
Clare closed the folder.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"I do."
At eleven thirty, the emergency board meeting began.
Matthew entered the room expecting allies.
Instead, he found strangers.
The directors who once greeted him with handshakes now avoided eye contact.
Richard Lawson sat at the head of the table.
"We'll begin."
Matthew pulled out a chair.
"I'd like to address the allegations."
"You'll have your chance."
Richard nodded toward General Counsel Melissa Grant.
Melissa stood.
"As of this morning, we have verified three separate matters requiring immediate action."
She held up the first document.
"Criminal allegations involving domestic assault."
The second.
"Corporate ownership discrepancies."
The third.
"Possible misuse of company assets."
Matthew interrupted.
"This is ridiculous."
Melissa ignored him.
"The Board has a fiduciary duty to protect the company."
Richard folded his hands.
"Matthew..."
"For now..."
"...you are relieved of all executive authority."
The room fell silent.
Matthew laughed.
"You can't remove me."
Richard slid another document across the table.
"We already have."
Lauren turned off the television.
Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
She had spent the last three years believing she was building a future.
Matthew had promised marriage.
A new life.
Children.
Everything Clare supposedly couldn't give him.
Now...
Everything was unraveling.
Her assistant entered cautiously.
"Miss Thorne?"
"What?"
"Someone's here."
"Who?"
The assistant hesitated.
"They said they're from the FBI."
Lauren's coffee cup slipped from her hands.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Back at the hospital...
Charles Whitmore walked in carrying another stack of documents.
"I've spoken with the district attorney."
Jonathan looked up.
"And?"
"They're preparing felony assault charges."
Clare remained silent.
Charles continued.
"There may also be charges involving financial misconduct."
Jonathan nodded.
"What about Lauren?"
Charles smiled slightly.
"Interesting question."
He placed a photograph on the bed.
Lauren exiting a private bank in Zurich six months earlier.
Clare frowned.
"What is this?"
"A transfer."
Charles replied.
"Approximately twelve million dollars."
Jonathan's eyes narrowed.
"Corporate money?"
"We believe so."
Clare stared at the picture.
"So she stole from the company too?"
Charles corrected her.
"She may have helped Matthew steal from the company."
Lauren sat across from two federal investigators.
Neither smiled.
One opened a notebook.
"Miss Thorne."
She nodded nervously.
"We're investigating financial transactions connected to NexusCore Technologies."
"I don't know anything."
The older investigator placed several bank statements on the table.
"We think you do."
Lauren looked down.
Her signature appeared on every page.
She closed her eyes.
Matthew had told her they were investment documents.
Tax forms.
Routine paperwork.
She had signed them without reading.
The investigator leaned forward.
"You have two choices."
Lauren looked up.
"Continue protecting Mr. Hayes..."
He paused.
"...or start protecting yourself."
At noon, the financial news channels erupted again.

Employees gathered around televisions throughout headquarters.
Some whispered.
Some cried.
Others quietly updated their résumés.
The empire Matthew had spent seven years building was collapsing faster than anyone imagined.
Clare looked out the hospital window.
The city seemed different now.
Not because Manhattan had changed.
Because she had.
Jonathan joined her bedside.
"What are you thinking?"
She smiled sadly.
"I spent so many years believing Lauren stole my husband."
Jonathan remained silent.
Clare continued.
"But now..."
She looked down at the financial records.
"I think she inherited a liar."
Jonathan nodded.
"People like Matthew don't betray only one person."
"They betray everyone."
That afternoon, Lauren requested another meeting with the investigators.
This time...
She didn't bring a lawyer.
"I'll cooperate."
The lead investigator looked at her carefully.
"What changed?"
Lauren stared out the window.
"I finally realized something."
"What?"
"The man I destroyed another woman's life for..."
Her voice cracked.
"...never intended to save mine."
She reached into her designer handbag.
Inside was a small gold flash drive.
"I think..."
She whispered.
"...you're going to want this."
The investigator accepted it.
"What's on it?"
Lauren swallowed hard.
"Everything Matthew never wanted anyone to find."
Across town, Matthew Hayes had no idea that the woman he trusted more than anyone else had just handed federal investigators the first piece of evidence that could destroy him completely.
The board had turned against him.
The market had abandoned him.
And now...
His closest ally had chosen survival over loyalty.
His empire was no longer simply cracking.
It was beginning to collapse from within.
