Chapter 5 – The Board Turns

Chapter 5 – The Board Turns
The trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange had seen panic before.
Economic recessions.
Global pandemics.
Bank failures.
But corporate collapses carried a different kind of energy.
They happened in real time.
And by 1:15 p.m., NexusCore Technologies had become the only company anyone wanted to talk about.
Its stock had fallen another nine percent.
Financial analysts no longer debated whether the company faced a crisis.
They debated whether it could survive one.
On the forty-second floor of NexusCore headquarters, Matthew Hayes paced inside his office like a man trapped in a shrinking cage.
His suit jacket lay discarded over a chair.
His tie had been loosened.
The polished confidence that had defined him for years had begun to crack.
He dialed another number.
Voicemail.
His public relations director.
Another call.
Voicemail.
His chief marketing officer.
Another.
His executive assistant.
Straight to voicemail.
He slammed the phone onto his desk.
"Unbelievable."
A soft knock interrupted his fury.
"Come in."
Melissa Grant, the company's General Counsel, stepped inside.
Her expression was unreadable.
"The Board wants your company laptop."
Matthew laughed bitterly.
"My laptop?"
"And your access badge."
"You can't be serious."
"I'm completely serious."
"I built this company."
Melissa met his eyes.
"No."
She said quietly.
"You helped build it."
The words struck harder than she intended.
For a moment, Matthew saw something he hadn't expected.
Pity.
He hated it.
Across town, Clare watched the financial news from the hospital.
The television muted.
Closed captions scrolling across the bottom of the screen.
Jonathan entered carrying two cups of tea.
"You should rest."
"I've rested enough."
He handed her a cup.
"The doctors disagree."
She smiled faintly.
"For seven years, I convinced myself I couldn't survive without Matthew."
"And now?"
She looked toward the skyline.
"I'm beginning to wonder how I survived with him."
Jonathan didn't answer.
Some realizations needed silence more than words.
Charles Whitmore entered with another folder.
"I have news."
Jonathan raised an eyebrow.
"The Board?"
Charles nodded.
"They're preparing a formal vote."
Clare frowned.
"A vote for what?"
"Removing Matthew permanently."
"So quickly?"
Charles smiled.
"They're not acting because he's accused of assault."
"They're acting because investors are terrified."
Jonathan added,
"Public companies don't reward loyalty."
"They reward stability."
Meanwhile...
Richard Lawson stood at the head of the executive boardroom.
Every seat was filled.
Nine directors.
Three legal advisers.
Two outside consultants.
An independent forensic accountant.
No empty chairs.
No distractions.
Richard looked around the room.
"Let's begin."
Melissa distributed fresh copies of the investigative report.
"Since this morning..."
she began,
"...we've identified additional irregularities."
The forensic accountant spoke next.
"There are at least thirty-seven expense reports currently under review."
One director frowned.
"Personal expenses?"
"Potentially."
Another interrupted.
"How much?"
The accountant adjusted his glasses.
"So far..."
"...approximately twenty-eight million dollars."
The room fell silent.
Matthew stood abruptly.
"That's impossible."
The accountant calmly turned another page.
"Private jet flights."
"Hamptons property renovations."
"Luxury jewelry."
"International travel."
He looked directly at Matthew.
"None appear to have legitimate business purposes."
Matthew's face reddened.
"They were executive development expenses."
No one responded.
Even he knew how weak it sounded.
In a federal office downtown...
Lauren Thorne sat across from Special Agent Daniel Brooks.
The gold flash drive rested on the table between them.
"Have you reviewed it?"
Lauren nodded slowly.
"Years ago."
"What's inside?"
She looked down at her hands.
"Emails."
"What else?"
"Bank transfers."
"Expense approvals."
Brooks leaned forward.
"Anything else?"
Lauren hesitated.
Then whispered,
"Audio recordings."
His eyebrows rose.
"Recordings?"
"Matthew recorded nearly every important meeting."
"Why?"
"He never trusted anyone."
Brooks remained silent.
Lauren laughed bitterly.
"Apparently..."
"...I wasn't an exception."
At St. Vincent's Hospital...
A nurse helped Clare take her first steps since the assault.
Each movement hurt.
Her ribs protested.
Her bruises burned.
But she kept walking.
One slow step.
Then another.
Jonathan watched from the doorway.
He wanted to help.
Instead, he let her walk alone.
Not because she didn't need him.
Because she needed to remember her own strength.
Halfway across the room, Clare stopped.
Breathing heavily.
The nurse smiled.
"You're doing well."
Clare shook her head.
"No."
She looked at her reflection in the window.
"I'm starting over."
The board meeting resumed.
Richard folded his hands.
"The final item."
Melissa placed another document in front of each director.
"Shareholder verification."
Matthew's heartbeat quickened.
Richard spoke carefully.
"Our outside counsel has confirmed that Clare Sterling remains the legal majority shareholder."
One director looked stunned.
"How was this missed?"
Melissa answered.
"A signature required to complete the original transfer was never executed."
Another director looked toward Matthew.
"You knew?"
"No."
Matthew answered immediately.
"I had no idea."
Richard believed him.
Not because Matthew deserved trust.
Because the shock on his face couldn't be faked.
Still...
Intent didn't matter.
The documents did.
Richard looked around the table.
"As of this morning..."
"...the controlling owner of NexusCore Technologies is Clare Elizabeth Sterling."
Silence settled over the room.
One director finally asked the obvious question.
"Has anyone contacted her?"
Richard nodded.
"Through her attorney."
"And?"
"They declined to comment."
Jonathan's phone vibrated.
Richard Lawson.
He answered.
"Richard."
"We've confirmed everything."
"I expected you would."
Richard took a slow breath.
"The Board wants to know one thing."
Jonathan glanced toward Clare, who was slowly making another lap around the hospital room.
"Ask."
"Is your daughter interested in returning?"
Jonathan smiled quietly.
"That's a decision only she can make."
"Will she?"
"I don't know."
He paused.
"But I do know this."
Richard waited.
"The woman you remember from seven years ago..."
Jonathan watched Clare straighten her shoulders despite the pain.
"...isn't the woman who's coming back."
Late that afternoon...
Matthew finally received a visitor.
Not a lawyer.
Not a board member.
Detective Elena Ruiz.
She entered carrying a thin folder.
"Mr. Hayes."
He remained seated.
"I have nothing to say."
"You'll have plenty to say."
She placed several photographs on his desk.
Pictures from the penthouse.
Broken glass.
Bloodstained marble.
The shattered orchids.
Then...
The cane.
Matthew looked away.
Ruiz noticed.
"You recognize it."
He remained silent.
She opened another envelope.
"This was recovered from building security."
A flash drive.
Matthew's stomach tightened.
"The surveillance footage."
His eyes widened almost imperceptibly.
Ruiz saw it.
"We have your entire visit recorded."
His mouth went dry.
"You don't need a confession anymore."
She stood.
"You need a defense attorney."
As she reached the door, she stopped.
"Oh..."
She looked back.
"One more thing."
Matthew met her eyes.
"Mrs. Sterling has chosen to cooperate fully."
The words echoed through the office.
Mrs. Sterling.
Not your wife.
Not Clare.
The title reminded him of something he had forgotten.
Legally...
She was still his wife.
And legally...
She no longer feared him.
Ruiz left without another word.
That evening, the Board of Directors gathered for one final vote.
Richard looked around the table.
"All those in favor of removing Matthew Hayes as Chief Executive Officer of NexusCore Technologies, effective immediately."
One hand rose.
Then another.
Another.
Another.
Within seconds...
Every hand in the room was raised.
Nine votes.
None opposed.
Richard quietly lowered his own hand.
"The motion carries unanimously."
At that exact moment, across Manhattan, Clare stood beside the hospital window watching the sun sink behind the skyline.
Her body still ached.
Her future remained uncertain.
But somewhere deep inside...
The frightened woman who had counted twenty blows on a cold marble floor was beginning to disappear.
In her place stood the woman who had once believed in impossible dreams.
The woman who had built a company from a tiny apartment in Queens.
The woman who had forgotten her own worth.
She wasn't healed.
Not yet.
But for the first time in years...
She could finally see the road ahead.
And on the other end of the city, Matthew Hayes received the email that officially ended his reign.
Subject: Notice of Removal as Chief Executive Officer
He read it three times.
Each word felt heavier than the last.
His title was gone.
His authority was gone.
His allies were disappearing.
And he was only beginning to understand that losing his position would be the easiest part of what was coming.
