The head of security remained polite.
"Board orders."
Inside the conference room, every director was already seated.
Edward Sterling entered last.
Not as an investor.
As the holder of the largest voting block through the Sterling Family Trust.
Matthew stared in disbelief.
"You... own shares?"
Edward placed a thick folder on the table.
"My family invested in NexusCore before its first institutional funding round."
Matthew's face paled.
"You never told me."
"You never asked."
The independent audit began.
Hidden company expenses.
Corporate funds used to finance Matthew's private lifestyle.
Unauthorized executive bonuses.
Payments linked to Lauren through shell consulting contracts.
Each document spoke louder than any accusation.
The Chairperson closed the final report.
"The board finds sufficient grounds to suspend Mr. Hayes pending a full investigation."
One vote followed another.
Unanimous.
Matthew was removed as Chief Executive Officer.
His company phone was disabled.
His executive accounts were frozen.
Security escorted him from the building before the opening bell.
