Chapter 4 – A Daughter Comes Home

Three months later...

The bruises had faded.

The scars remained.

Some could be seen.

Others could not.

Clare stood beside the large windows of her father's estate, watching the autumn leaves drift across the gardens she had not walked through in seven years.

Edward joined her quietly.

"I kept your room exactly as it was."

She smiled through tears.

"I didn't deserve that."

He gently shook his head.

"A parent doesn't keep score."

He reached into his pocket and handed her a small envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed a younger Clare and Edward building a birdhouse together when she was ten years old.

On the back, her father had written one sentence years earlier.

No matter how far you go, you will always have a home.

Clare held the photograph against her heart.

Across the city, Matthew faced criminal charges for aggravated assault and other offenses arising from the investigation. The civil proceedings that followed dismantled the fortune he had worked so hard to project to the world.

But none of that mattered as much to Clare.

Revenge had never healed her.

Being believed did.

Being protected did.

Being welcomed home did.

As the sun set beyond the trees, Edward placed an arm around his daughter's shoulders.

"You once apologized for calling me."

Clare looked up.

"I remember."

He smiled gently.

"If you ever need help again..."

"You won't have to wait seven years."

For the first time in a long time...

Clare believed him.

And together, father and daughter walked back into the house—not to reclaim the past, but to begin a future built on safety, truth, and unconditional love.

The End.
