CHAPTER 2 — THE HEADLIGHTS

CHAPTER 2 — THE HEADLIGHTS
The mansion fell silent.
Adrian frowned as the beams of several black SUVs swept across the front windows.
One vehicle.
Then another.
Then six more.
Vanessa slowly stood, her champagne glass trembling in her hand.
"Who is that?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
She simply remained on her knees, one hand pressed against the marble floor, the other still holding her phone.
A calm voice came through the speaker.
"I'm here."
Three words.
That was all her father said before ending the call.
A moment later, the front doors shook.
Not from force.
From electronic locks disengaging.
Adrian stared.
"That's impossible."
"It shouldn't be," Evelyn said quietly.
"The security system hasn't belonged to you for months."
The doors opened.
Men and women in dark business suits entered first.
Behind them came uniformed investigators carrying sealed evidence cases.
The last person to step inside was a silver-haired man with steady eyes and an expression that revealed nothing.
Victor Hart.
Evelyn's father.
Adrian laughed nervously.
"So... you're the accountant?"
Victor looked around the room, taking in the riding crop on the floor, the blood on his daughter's dress, and the bruises already forming across her back.
His face never changed.
May you like
"No."
"I balance much larger accounts."
