CHAPTER 13

CHAPTER 13
THE LETTER FROM DAVID
The letter arrived on a rainy Tuesday morning.
No warning.
No phone call.
No explanation.
Just a plain white envelope placed on my father’s desk.
My security team had checked it.
No threat.
No hidden device.
No trap.
Only one thing written on the front.
Anna.
I stared at it for a long time.
Because I knew the handwriting.
David Whitmore.
My father stood across from me.
“You do not have to read it.”
I looked at the envelope.
“I know.”
“And if you do…”
He paused.
“Do not read it because you feel responsible for him.”
I nodded.
Because that was something I had finally learned.
His pain was not my responsibility.
His regret was not my duty to carry.
But there was still a part of me that wanted to understand.
Not forgive.
Not forget.
Understand.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
No lawyer’s language.
No carefully prepared statement.
Just David’s words.
Anna,
I do not know if you will ever forgive me.
I do not expect you to.
I stopped.
Because this was different.
David had spent years believing apologies were tools.
Something people used to make consequences disappear.
But this letter did not feel like that.
It felt like someone finally admitting there was nothing left to hide.
When I first met you, I thought you were the safest person I had ever known.
That sounds strange now.
But it is true.
You were honest. You were kind. You believed people could be better.
I should have protected that.
Instead, I used it against you.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
My mother taught me that weakness was something to eliminate.
She taught me that emotions made people vulnerable.
She taught me that winning mattered more than being good.
For a long time, I blamed her for who I became.
But that was another lie.
She influenced me.
She damaged me.
But I chose.
Every time I hurt you, I chose.
I closed my eyes.
Because that was the sentence I had needed to hear.
Not excuses.
Not explanations.
Responsibility.
The letter continued.
I remember the night you told me you were pregnant.
You were crying because you were afraid I would not be ready.
I held you and promised I would become the man our child deserved.
I think that was the last honest promise I ever made.
A tear fell onto the page.
Not because I wanted him back.
Not because I forgot.
Because I remembered the person he pretended to be.
The person I had loved.
I want you to know something.
The Christmas night was not the moment I lost you.
I lost you long before that.
Every time I stayed silent.
Every time I defended my mother instead of you.
Every time I convinced myself that controlling you was protecting our family.
I lost you piece by piece.
I looked away from the letter.
My father quietly left the room.
Giving me privacy.
Giving me something David never did.
A choice.
The next page contained something unexpected.
A confession.
Not only about me.
About Project Sterling.
You deserve to know the truth about how we met.
I did not choose you randomly.
My mother introduced us.
She knew your family history.
She knew who your father was.
But she did not create Project Sterling.
I froze.
The same mystery.
The same hidden person.
The person who started everything was someone inside your father’s circle.
Someone who believed your family had something they deserved.
Someone who watched your mother disappear and used that pain as an opportunity.
My heart stopped.
My mother.
Again.
Anna, I know you may hate me for what I am about to say.
But your mother did not abandon you.
I stopped breathing.
For years, that was the wound I carried.
The unanswered question.
Why did she leave?
Why did she never come back?
Why was I alone?
Your mother was investigating the same people my mother worked with.
She discovered something dangerous.
And before she could expose it, she disappeared.
My hands began shaking.
I found documents years later.
I hid them because I was afraid.
That is the truth I have never admitted.
I knew something happened to your mother.
And I did nothing.
The room felt silent.
Even the rain outside seemed distant.
Anna, I cannot undo what I did.
I cannot give you back the years I took from you.
But I can finally stop lying.
The person behind Project Sterling is still watching you.
And they are closer than you think.
The final paragraph was written differently.
The handwriting was less controlled.
Almost like David wrote it in a hurry.
If anything happens to me, do not believe it was an accident.
The person who created this plan has already destroyed one life.
They will destroy another to protect the truth.
Please protect our daughter.
Even if you never forgive me, thank you for giving me one thing I did not deserve.
The chance to finally tell the truth.
David
I read the letter three times.
Each time, I noticed something different.
The first time, I felt anger.
The second time, confusion.
The third time…
Fear.
Because David had not written this letter to ask for forgiveness.
He had written it as a warning.
My father returned.
One look at my face told him everything.
“What did he say?”
I handed him the letter.
He read silently.
Then he stopped.
His expression changed.
“What?”
I asked.
My father looked up.
“He mentioned your mother.”
“Yes.”
His eyes moved back to the page.
“He knows more than he should.”
Before I could respond, my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And his expression hardened.
“What happened?”
He looked at me.
“David disappeared.”
My blood went cold.
“What do you mean disappeared?”
“He left the rehabilitation center two hours ago.”
“Security footage shows him leaving willingly.”
A pause.
“But he left one thing behind.”
My father turned the phone toward me.
A photograph.
David standing outside the building.
Holding an envelope.
And beside him…
A person wearing a dark coat.
Someone whose face was hidden.
At the bottom of the photograph was a message.
THE FINAL WITNESS HAS BEEN MOVED.
I stared at the image.
Because I finally understood.
David’s fall was never the ending.
It was the beginning.
And whoever had created Project Sterling was now removing every person who knew the truth.
Including David.
