CHAPTER 8

CHAPTER 8
THE SECRET DAVID HID
For three years, I believed I knew David Whitmore.
I believed I knew the man I married.
The man who held my hand during our wedding.
The man who promised to protect me.
The man who looked into my eyes and said:
“I will always stand beside you.”
But those words were never a promise.
They were a performance.
And the most painful truth was not that David had lied to me.
It was that I had spent years defending a version of him that never existed.
The morning after Rachel’s testimony, my father arrived at the hospital earlier than usual.
He did not bring coffee.
He did not bring flowers.
He brought a file.
A thick black folder.
I knew immediately.
Something had changed.
“What happened?”
I asked.
My father placed the folder on the table.
“We found something.”
My stomach tightened.
“About David?”
He nodded.
“About David before you met him.”
I opened the folder.
The first page was a photograph.
David.
Ten years younger.
Standing outside a building I recognized.
Ashmore Legal Foundation.
A charity organization connected to several wealthy families.
“What is this?”
I asked.
My father looked at me.
“David did not begin his career by defending people.”
“He began by protecting secrets.”
The documents inside revealed something I never knew.
Before becoming a respected attorney…
Before joining his prestigious law firm…
David worked for powerful clients who needed problems removed quietly.
Not solved.
Removed.
Complaints disappeared.
Witnesses changed their statements.
Records were delayed.
David had built his reputation on one skill.
Making inconvenient truths vanish.
My fingers tightened around the pages.
“So he knew exactly what he was doing.”
My father did not answer.
Because he knew I already understood.
The cruelty at Christmas was not a mistake.
The threats were not anger.
The manipulation was not instinct.
David had spent years learning how to control people.
And I was simply the person he believed he could control forever.
But there was one document that caught my attention.
A payment record.
A transfer from Sylvia Whitmore.
To David.
The amount was large.
Very large.
“What was this for?”
I asked.
My father looked serious.
“That is what we are trying to determine.”
That afternoon, Rachel came to see me.
She looked exhausted.
But relieved.
For the first time since I met her, she looked like someone who had stopped carrying a secret alone.
“I owe you an apology.”
She said.
I frowned.
“For what?”
“For not warning you sooner.”
I shook my head.
“You didn’t know me.”
“But I knew him.”
The sadness in her voice was heavy.
“And I knew what he could become.”
Rachel sat beside me.
“There is something I never told the court.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She hesitated.
Then she spoke.
“David was not just protecting my mother.”
“He was protecting himself.”
The room became quiet.
Rachel explained.
Years ago, before I met David, he discovered something about Sylvia.
Something that could destroy their family.
A hidden agreement.
A secret financial arrangement.
A plan involving stolen money and false identities.
David found it.
And instead of exposing it…
He joined it.
“Why?”
I whispered.
Rachel looked down.
“Because he was promised power.”
Not money.
Not just money.
Power.
Sylvia told David that one day the Whitmore name would belong to him.
The companies.
The influence.
The connections.
Everything.
All he had to do was protect the family.
No matter the cost.
I closed my eyes.
The man who claimed he loved me…
Had spent years choosing ambition over humanity.
That evening, David appeared unexpectedly.
Not at the hospital.
Outside my father’s home.
Security informed us immediately.
My father looked at me.
“You do not have to see him.”
I thought about it.
Then I nodded.
“I want to.”
David stood outside the gate.
But something was different.
The confidence was gone.
The perfect lawyer mask had cracked.
He looked tired.
Older.
Human.
But I reminded myself.
Looking broken does not erase what someone has done.
“Anna.”
His voice was quiet.
“I need to explain.”
I looked at him through the gate.
“No.”
He stopped.
“You need to confess.”
The words hit him.
Because he knew I was right.
“I made mistakes.”
He said.
I stared at him.
“Mistakes?”
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
I stepped closer.
“David.”
My voice remained calm.
“You did not make one mistake.”
“You made choices.”
Silence.
“You chose your mother.”
“You chose your reputation.”
“You chose your career.”
“You chose to hurt me because you believed I was powerless.”
His face changed.
Because that was the truth he could not escape.
“I was afraid.”
He whispered.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered the kitchen floor.
My broken phone.
My unborn child.
“Being afraid explains your choices.”
I said.
“It does not excuse them.”
David looked at me.
“I can fix this.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
A pause.
“You can only finally admit it.”
Before he left, he turned around.
“Anna.”
“Yes?”
“There is one thing you don’t know.”
I waited.
His voice became quieter.
“My mother was not the person who planned your marriage.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
David looked terrified.
“She was involved.”
“But someone else started it.”
He walked away.
Leaving me standing there.
With one terrifying question.
Who chose me before David ever met me?
That night, my father found another file.
A file hidden inside David’s old legal records.
The title was simple.
PROJECT STERLING.
My name.
My family.
My entire life.
Someone had been watching me long before David entered it.
And whoever it was…
Had planned everything.
