The instant my thumb pressed the panic button, the room erupted.
A shrill alarm echoed through the eleventh floor.
Red emergency lights flashed outside my hospital room.
Within seconds, the door burst open.
Two nurses rushed in, followed by a security officer.
They froze.
Blood streamed down the side of my face.
The blood pressure monitor lay on the floor.
My mother still stood over my bed, breathing heavily.
Connor backed into the corner.
My father instinctively tried to explain.
"It was an accident—"
The charge nurse raised her hand.
"Nobody move."
Hospital security stepped between my family and my bed.
A trauma physician immediately began examining my head.
"Possible skull fracture."
Another nurse quietly looked toward the ceiling.
Room 1127 had recently been upgraded with continuous patient-monitoring cameras after several incidents involving violent visitors.
Every second inside the room had been recorded.
The security supervisor calmly spoke into his radio.
"Preserve all video footage."
