Chapter 2: The Recording No One Could Deny

Chapter 2: The Recording No One Could Deny
Chicago police arrived less than twenty minutes later.
Detective Sarah Martinez introduced herself before asking a single question.
Then she turned to the hospital administrator.
"I'd like to review the surveillance."
My mother immediately protested.
"That's a violation of privacy!"
The administrator shook his head.
"Visitors are notified upon entry that common patient areas are under continuous security monitoring."
He pointed toward a small sign beside the doorway.
None of them had noticed it.
Thirty minutes later, everyone sat in a conference room.
The video played.
There was no confusion.
No missing angle.
No blurry footage.
It showed my mother placing the paperwork on my bed.
Demanding the money.
Calling me selfish.
Ripping the monitor from the wall.
Swinging it with both hands.
Then my father stepping in front of the door after the attack.
Finally...
It captured Connor saying quietly,
"Mom... stop... she's bleeding."
The detective stopped the recording.
She looked directly at my father.
"Would you like to change your statement?"
Richard lowered his eyes.
May you like
He couldn't.
The truth had already spoken.
