Chapter 12 — The Family Turns Against Her

Chapter 12 — The Family Turns Against Her

By sunrise, the family had already chosen sides.

Not mine.

Not Teresa's.

Theirs.

For years, everyone had protected themselves by standing behind the same woman.

Teresa.

She had controlled the money.

She had controlled the family gatherings.

She had decided who was invited, who was forgiven, who was blamed, and who was pushed out.

And whenever someone questioned her, she gave them the same answer.

"I know what's best for Connor."

They believed her.

Until the documents surfaced.

Until the recordings appeared.

Until they learned about Daniel.

And most importantly...

until they realized Teresa had been lying to everyone.

The first call came at 7:12 a.m.

It was from my aunt Betsy.

I almost didn't answer.

Then I remembered something Amy had once said.

"Sometimes the people who stayed silent are the ones who know where the bodies are buried."

I answered.

"Hello?"

Betsy's voice was shaking.

"Connor."

"Yes?"

"I need to see you."

"Why?"

"I know about Daniel."

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What do you know?"

"Not over the phone."

I looked at Amy.

She was standing in the doorway.

"Come to Sarah's office."

There was a long pause.

"I will."

Then Betsy whispered:

"Connor..."

"What?"

"Your mother is going to come after me."

The line went dead.

Betsy arrived twenty minutes later.

She wasn't alone.

My uncle Harold came with her.

Then my cousin Mason.

Then two other relatives I hadn't seen since the birthday party.

They entered Sarah's conference room without speaking.

For years, these people had defended Teresa.

They had laughed when she humiliated Amy.

They had accepted her money.

They had repeated her accusations.

They had called Amy ungrateful.

Now they couldn't look her in the eyes.

Betsy sat down first.

"I owe you an apology."

Amy remained standing.

"For what?"

Betsy swallowed.

"For everything."

Amy said nothing.

Betsy looked at me.

"We believed Teresa."

"I know."

"We thought Amy was trying to separate you from us."

"I know."

"We thought you were being manipulated."

I shook my head.

"You were the ones being manipulated."

Harold nodded.

"You're right."

He placed a folder on the table.

"We brought these."

I opened it.

Inside were bank statements.

Dozens of them.

Transfers.

Withdrawals.

Payments.

Checks.

All from the account Teresa controlled.

I stared at the numbers.

"Where did you get this?"

Harold answered:

"Teresa sent us money."

I looked up.

"How much?"

He hesitated.

"Over the years?"

"Yes."

"Almost four hundred thousand dollars."

Amy's expression hardened.

"What did she pay you for?"

Harold looked ashamed.

"To keep quiet."

Silence.

I slowly closed the folder.

"About what?"

He looked at Betsy.

She answered.

"Your father."

My heart stopped.

"What did you know?"

Betsy began crying.

"Not everything."

"Then tell me what you knew."

She wiped her face.

"Twenty years ago, your father came to me."

"Why?"

"He was afraid."

"Of Blackwell?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"He was afraid of Teresa."

I stared.

"Why?"

"Because he discovered she was meeting Blackwell."

My stomach tightened.

"She was working with him?"

"Yes."

"Before she disappeared?"

Betsy nodded.

"Before she became Teresa."

Amy stepped forward.

"So she was already involved with Blackwell before Connor was born."

Betsy nodded.

"Yes."

I looked at Harold.

"And you knew?"

He lowered his head.

"I suspected."

"You accepted her money."

"Yes."

"You lied to me."

"Yes."

My anger rose.

"You watched her destroy my marriage."

Harold's eyes filled with tears.

"I was afraid."

"Everyone was afraid."

I stood.

"And because everyone was afraid, my wife suffered."

Amy reached for my hand.

I calmed myself.

Betsy suddenly spoke.

"There's more."

I looked at her.

"How much more?"

She took a deep breath.

"Teresa didn't just pay us to stay quiet."

"What else?"

"She paid us to lie about Daniel."

The room went silent.

Mason looked at the floor.

"I was the one who helped remove his name."

I stared at him.

"You knew?"

"I was a teenager."

"You knew."

"I didn't understand."

"But you helped."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"What did you do?"

"I altered photographs."

My chest tightened.

"You cut him out."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Teresa told me Daniel was dangerous."

Amy looked at him.

"Did you believe her?"

"I did."

"Why?"

Mason looked at me.

"Because she showed me blood."

My stomach dropped.

"What blood?"

"She said Daniel had attacked someone."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Where did she get it?"

"I never asked."

I stared at him.

Another piece.

Another lie.

Another manufactured story.

Teresa hadn't simply erased Daniel.

She had created a monster out of him.

Then my aunt Betsy reached into her purse.

She removed an old cassette tape.

"Your father gave me this."

I stared.

"When?"

"Three days before he disappeared."

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

"Teresa threatened me."

"With what?"

"She said she'd destroy my family."

Betsy placed the cassette on the table.

"I kept it anyway."

Sarah looked at it.

"Do you have a player?"

Betsy nodded.

"I brought one."

She placed an old cassette player beside it.

My hands were shaking as I pressed play.

Static.

Then my father's voice.

Low.

Tired.

Terrified.

"If you're hearing this, something has happened."

I froze.

Amy squeezed my hand.

My father's voice continued.

"Connor is not the heir."

Silence.

My heart stopped.

"Daniel is."

Betsy began crying.

The recording continued.

"Teresa knows."

A pause.

"She knows what Blackwell will do."

Another pause.

"She believes she can control the situation."

My father's voice became softer.

"She can't."

Static.

Then:

"If Daniel disappears, protect Connor."

The tape clicked.

I thought it was over.

Then my father's voice returned.

"Because Connor is the key."

I stared at the machine.

"What key?"

The recording continued.

"Not to the money."

"Not to the house."

"To the truth."

Then silence.

The tape ended.

No one spoke.

The door opened.

Sarah's assistant rushed inside.

"Sorry."

She looked nervous.

"What happened?"

"Someone leaked the documents."

I frowned.

"Which documents?"

"The second deed."

My stomach tightened.

"Where?"

"Everywhere."

She handed me her tablet.

A news article was already spreading online.

BRADLEY FAMILY ESTATE FRAUD EXPOSED

Another headline appeared.

BILLION-DOLLAR PROPERTY DISPUTE INVOLVES MISSING HEIR

Then another.

WHO IS DANIEL BRADLEY?

I looked at Amy.

"This wasn't supposed to happen yet."

Sarah nodded.

"Someone wanted this public."

Betsy whispered:

"Teresa."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because she would never expose Daniel."

Sarah looked at me.

"Then who?"

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

NOW THEY ALL KNOW.

Another.

LET'S SEE WHO THEY CHOOSE.

I stared at the screen.

Then the final message arrived.

YOUR FAMILY IS NO LONGER YOUR FAMILY.

By noon, the family had split completely.

Some relatives publicly defended Teresa.

Others released statements against her.

Old accusations resurfaced.

Bank records leaked.

Photographs appeared online.

People who had spent years calling Amy manipulative suddenly claimed they had always supported her.

It was disgusting.

And predictable.

Amy watched the chaos from the living room.

"People don't change that quickly."

"No."

"They're afraid."

"Yes."

"They're choosing whoever they think will win."

I looked at her.

"And you?"

She smiled faintly.

"I'm choosing you."

I pulled her into my arms.

Then she whispered:

"But there's something you need to understand."

"What?"

"Your family isn't turning against Teresa because they suddenly became good people."

"I know."

"They're turning because they think she's losing."

I nodded.

"And if she starts winning again?"

"They'll run back."

Exactly.

That evening, my uncle Harold came to me privately.

"I need to tell you something."

"What?"

He looked terrified.

"I saw Daniel."

I froze.

"When?"

"Six months ago."

"Where?"

"The medical facility."

My heart started pounding.

"Why were you there?"

"Teresa sent me."

"To do what?"

"Check whether he was still alive."

"And?"

"He was."

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Teresa threatened me."

"What did she say?"

"She said if I ever told you, Daniel would disappear."

I clenched my fists.

"Is he still there?"

Harold shook his head.

"No."

"When did he leave?"

"Three weeks ago."

"Who took him?"

"I don't know."

"Where did they take him?"

"I don't know."

Then Harold whispered:

"But I know who signed him out."

I waited.

"Arthur Blackwell."

Everything suddenly made sense.

Blackwell hadn't been searching for Daniel.

He already had him.

The entire family war had been a distraction.

The house.

The deeds.

The money.

The leaked documents.

All of it had kept us looking in the wrong direction.

While Blackwell moved Daniel somewhere else.

I called Sarah.

"We need to find him."

She nodded.

"We'll start with the facility."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Start with Blackwell."

"Connor, we need evidence."

"I have evidence."

I showed her the photograph.

Then the passport.

Then the hospital records.

She studied them.

"These are enough to start."

"Then start."

She nodded.

At midnight, there was a knock on the door.

Amy and I looked at each other.

I checked the security monitor.

No one.

I opened the door.

A package sat on the porch.

No sender.

Inside was a small silver necklace.

The crescent.

Teresa's necklace.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

SHE NEVER WORE IT FOR THE REASON YOU THINK.

Amy picked up the necklace.

There was something engraved on the back.

Three letters.

D.B.

Daniel Bradley.

I turned it over.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a photograph.

Not Daniel.

A woman.

Young.

Pregnant.

Standing beside Samuel Bradley.

My father.

I stared at the woman.

Amy whispered:

"Who is she?"

I didn't know.

Then I turned the photograph over.

One sentence was written on the back.

This is Daniel's real mother.

My blood went cold.

"Teresa wasn't his mother."

Amy looked at me.

"Then who was?"

Before I could answer, the phone rang.

Betsy.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Connor..."

"What happened?"

"I found something in Teresa's old house."

"What?"

"A birth certificate."

"For Daniel?"

"No."

She began crying.

"For you."

I froze.

"What does it say?"

She whispered:

"Your mother's name isn't Teresa."

"I know."

"No."

Her voice shook.

"That's not the shocking part."

"What is?"

"The biological mother listed on your birth certificate..."

She stopped.

Then:

"...is the same woman in the photograph."

I couldn't breathe.

The woman beside my father.

Daniel's supposed mother.

Was also my mother.

Amy stared at me.

I looked down at the photograph.

And suddenly the family story collapsed.

Daniel wasn't Teresa's son.

I wasn't Teresa's son.

The woman who raised me wasn't my biological mother.

For twenty years, Teresa had been protecting a secret.

But the secret wasn't simply who Daniel was.

It was who I was.

And if the birth certificate was genuine...

then every deed, every inheritance, every lie, and every decision Teresa had made had been built around one terrifying truth:

I was never the son she claimed to be.

The family had turned against Teresa.

But they had no idea what was coming next.

May you like

Because once they learned the truth about my birth...

they might all turn against me.
