Chapter 4: Consequences

Chapter 4: Consequences

By sunset, reality reached their front door.

The mansion was no longer theirs.

The mortgage belonged to my holding company.

The luxury cars were leased under corporate ownership.

The country club memberships had been canceled.

Even the credit cards Daniel's mother loved to use stopped working at the checkout counter.

She called him in tears.

"They embarrassed me!"

"They cut up my card!"

Daniel finally understood.

Not everything had been taken.

Everything had been returned to its rightful owner.

Three weeks later, he asked to meet me one last time.

We sat across from each other in a quiet café.

He looked older.

Smaller.

"I loved you," he said.

I stirred my coffee.

"I believe you did."

"But love without respect eventually becomes ownership."

"And I was never something you owned."

He lowered his head.

"I made a terrible mistake."

I stood, leaving enough cash to cover both coffees.

"No."

"You made hundreds of small ones."

"The biggest was staying silent while someone tried to strip away my dignity."

I walked toward the door.

He never asked me to come back.

May you like

Perhaps because he finally knew the answer.

Some things cannot be rebuilt once respect is gone.
