Chapter 9 — The Night They Tried to Take Noah

Chapter 9 — The Night They Tried to Take Noah

The first thing I saw when the lights came back on was the gun.

The second was Diane.

She stood beneath the crystal chandelier, one hand wrapped around the weapon, the other resting calmly against the podium.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The ballroom had gone completely silent.

Then Diane smiled.

Not the nervous smile of a frightened woman.

Not the smile of someone who had been caught.

The smile of someone who believed she had finally reached the end of a plan.

“Please,” she said softly.

“Don't make this difficult.”

Ryan stepped in front of me.

Ethan moved beside him.

I could hear my heartbeat.

Diane's eyes went directly to me.

“Mia.”

I stared at her.

“Where is Noah?”

She smiled.

“Safe.”

My stomach dropped.

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

Ryan's face changed.

“What did you do?”

Diane didn't look at him.

“I warned you.”

“You threatened my wife.”

“I warned both of you.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You've done enough.”

Diane finally looked at him.

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“Ethan.”

He stared at her.

“You remember me.”

“Of course I remember you.”

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“You remember the boy you tried to erase.”

Diane tightened her grip on the gun.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand everything.”

“Then you know why I did it.”

“To protect the family?”

“To protect the empire.”

Ethan laughed.

“You mean the money.”

Diane's eyes hardened.

“You have no idea what happens if you take control.”

“I don't want control.”

“Everyone says that until they have it.”

Ethan looked at me.

“I want the truth.”

Diane's face went pale.

“You don't.”

Ryan grabbed my hand.

“We're leaving.”

Diane raised the gun.

“No.”

Security guards appeared at both entrances.

My heart sank.

I recognized two of them.

They had worked for the Whitmore family for years.

Diane had planned everything.

The locked doors.

The power outage.

The armed guards.

And Noah.

My baby was somewhere else.

My hands began shaking.

“Where is my son?”

Diane looked at me.

“Your son is exactly where he needs to be.”

“Where?”

She smiled.

“With people who can protect him.”

Ryan shouted:

“You're not his guardian!”

Diane laughed.

“Not yet.”

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

She lifted a folder from the podium.

“Emergency guardianship.”

My stomach dropped.

“You filed it tonight?”

“Yes.”

“You forged my signature again.”

“I didn't have to.”

She opened the folder.

“Your husband signed.”

I turned toward Ryan.

His face went white.

“I didn't.”

Diane smiled.

“Not this time.”

She held up another document.

A power of attorney.

Ryan stared.

“That isn't my signature.”

“No.”

Diane looked at him.

“Because this one was signed months ago.”

I looked at Ryan.

He shook his head.

“I never signed anything.”

Diane laughed.

“That's what your lawyer told you.”

The room went silent.

Daniel.

Again.

I felt something inside me snap.

“Where is Noah?”

Diane's expression hardened.

“Stop asking.”

“He is my son.”

“And he is a Whitmore heir.”

“He is not property.”

Diane's eyes narrowed.

“He is the key.”

“To what?”

“The trust.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“The trust belongs to me.”

Diane shook her head.

“Not anymore.”

“What did you do?”

“I activated the contingency.”

Ethan froze.

“What contingency?”

Diane looked at him.

“The one your father created.”

Ethan's face changed.

“My father never gave you control.”

“Your father is dead.”

“So is your authority.”

Diane smiled.

“You should ask your sister.”

I froze.

“My sister?”

Ethan looked at me.

“What does she mean?”

Diane laughed.

“Your mother never told you?”

I shook my head.

Diane's smile widened.

“You have a sister.”

The ballroom doors opened.

A woman walked in.

Late thirties.

Long dark hair.

Black dress.

She looked directly at Ethan.

His face went completely white.

“No.”

The woman stopped.

“Hello, Ethan.”

He whispered:

“Claire?”

I couldn't breathe.

Claire.

His mother.

The woman everyone said had disappeared twenty-eight years ago.

Alive.

Standing in front of us.

Diane lowered the gun.

For the first time that night, she looked genuinely terrified.

Claire looked at her.

“You've had enough.”

Diane whispered:

“You were supposed to be dead.”

Claire smiled.

“I was supposed to stay dead.”

Then she looked at me.

“And I couldn't.”

Claire walked toward us.

Ethan didn't move.

He looked like a child again.

“Mom?”

She touched his face.

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, the entire ballroom disappeared.

There was no empire.

No trust.

No lawyers.

No Diane.

Just a mother seeing the son she had lost.

Then Claire turned to me.

“You're Mia.”

I nodded.

“My father's daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And my brother's sister.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Ethan.

He looked at me.

We had spent our entire lives without knowing each other.

Yet somehow—

we had both been fighting the same people.

Claire reached into her coat.

Pulled out a small envelope.

She gave it to me.

“Your father wanted you to have this.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My father.

Claire.

Ethan.

And a baby.

I stared.

“Who's the baby?”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Noah.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Your father met you before you were born.”

I frowned.

“I don't understand.”

“He knew your child would one day become the target.”

She looked toward Diane.

“That is why the trust was created.”

I shook my head.

“Why would my father know about Noah before I even met Ryan?”

Claire's answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Because your father knew the Whitmore family would eventually come for you.”

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Then another.

The security guards began shouting.

Diane looked toward the doors.

Claire smiled.

“It's over.”

Diane raised the gun again.

“You think you can stop me?”

Claire shook her head.

“Not me.”

She looked at the ballroom entrance.

The doors burst open.

Police officers flooded inside.

Behind them came federal agents.

And behind them—

Evelyn.

Diane's face collapsed.

“No.”

Evelyn walked toward her.

“Put the weapon down.”

Diane raised it.

Ryan pulled me backward.

Then Diane's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

Someone was calling.

She answered.

A man's voice came through.

“Take Noah now.”

I heard it.

So did Ryan.

His expression turned to horror.

“Where is he?”

Diane looked at me.

Then at the gun.

Then at the police.

She whispered:

“They already have him.”

My blood froze.

“Who?”

She didn't answer.

She dropped the phone.

Ryan ran toward her.

“WHERE IS MY SON?”

Police grabbed him.

I screamed.

“Noah!”

Everything became chaos.

Agents moved through the ballroom.

People screamed.

Guests ran.

Diane was handcuffed.

Ethan was shouting questions at Claire.

Ryan was fighting the officers.

And I could only think about one thing.

My son.

Noah.

My baby was somewhere with people who had planned his disappearance.

I grabbed Evelyn.

“Find him.”

“We will.”

“Now.”

“We already have teams moving.”

“Where?”

“We traced the phone.”

“Where?”

She looked at me.

“The Whitmore estate.”

My stomach dropped.

The house.

The house full of secrets.

The place where Diane had been hiding evidence.

The place where my father had hidden Ethan.

I ran.

Ryan followed.

Claire came behind us.

Ethan grabbed her hand.

Police cars surrounded the estate.

Lights flashed across the trees.

The front doors were open.

We rushed inside.

“NOAH!”

No answer.

We searched the living room.

Kitchen.

Hallway.

Nursery.

Nothing.

Then I heard it.

A cry.

Faint.

From upstairs.

My heart nearly stopped.

I ran toward the sound.

Ryan behind me.

We reached a locked door.

He kicked it.

The door broke.

Inside was Noah.

He was strapped into a child safety seat.

Crying.

Terrified.

But alive.

I screamed his name.

I ran to him.

“Noah!”

His little hands reached for me.

I tore the straps open.

Pulled him into my arms.

He buried his face against my neck.

I cried.

“I'm here.”

I kissed his hair.

“Mommy's here.”

Ryan wrapped his arms around both of us.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then Claire walked into the room.

She looked at Noah.

Her expression changed.

“He has your father's eyes.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She smiled sadly.

“Exactly the way you did.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

Ethan entered.

He was holding a folder.

“I found this.”

He handed it to Ryan.

Inside was a list of payments.

Diane.

Daniel.

Richard.

Victor.

And another name.

A name I didn't recognize.

Ryan stared.

“Who is this?”

Claire's face changed.

She knew the name.

“That's impossible.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Arthur Whitmore.”

Ryan frowned.

“That's my grandfather.”

Claire nodded.

“He died fifteen years ago.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Then how is he sending money?”

Silence.

I stared at the account.

Recent transactions.

Last month.

Last week.

Yesterday.

Money had been moving through an account belonging to a dead man.

Then I saw the final transaction.

$5,000,000 — BENEFICIARY: NOAH WHITMORE.

I looked at Ryan.

“What does this mean?”

Evelyn entered the room.

She read the document.

Then her face went pale.

“This isn't a payment.”

“What is it?”

“It's a trigger.”

“For what?”

She looked at Noah.

“The trust.”

My heart stopped.

“What happens now?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“The moment someone attempted to remove Noah from his legal guardian…”

She pointed to the transaction.

“…the original trust activates.”

Ryan frowned.

“And who controls it?”

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

“Not Diane.”

“Not Daniel.”

“Not Victor.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“You.”

I stared.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father designed it that way.”

I held Noah tighter.

“But I don't understand.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You were never supposed to fight for your son's inheritance.”

“You were supposed to inherit the power to protect him.”

Then a gunshot came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Ryan handed Noah to me.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Mia—”

“I am not losing you too.”

He stared at me.

Then nodded.

We moved together.

Downstairs, police officers surrounded the hallway.

Diane was gone.

The handcuffs lay on the floor.

A broken window stood open.

She had escaped.

Beside the window was a note.

Evelyn picked it up.

She read it.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

She handed it to me.

Five words.

You haven't met the real enemy.

Underneath was another line.

Ask your husband about the night he met you.

I looked at Ryan.

He stared at the note.

“I don't understand.”

But his expression told me something.

He knew more than he was saying.

I stepped toward him.

“Ryan.”

He looked at me.

“When did you first meet me?”

He swallowed.

“College.”

“No.”

His eyes widened.

“What?”

“You told me we met at college.”

“We did.”

“Then why does this say otherwise?”

He didn't answer.

I looked at Claire.

She looked frightened.

Ethan stared at Ryan.

Then Ryan finally whispered:

“I met you before that.”

“When?”

He closed his eyes.

“Six months before.”

“Where?”

He opened his eyes.

“At your father's funeral.”

My heart stopped.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because my father told me never to speak to you.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

Ryan looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“Because your father had asked him to protect you.”

Silence.

I felt the world tilt.

Ryan continued:

“I was supposed to watch you.”

“Watch me?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

He took a breath.

“To make sure Richard never found you.”

I couldn't speak.

“You knew my father.”

“I did.”

“You knew about Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“And you married me because of it?”

Ryan's face crumpled.

“No.”

I stepped backward.

“Then why?”

He looked at me.

“Because somewhere along the way…”

His voice broke.

“…I stopped protecting you because your father asked me to.”

He took my hand.

“I protected you because I loved you.”

I looked at Noah.

Then at Ryan.

And for the first time, I understood the terrible truth.

Our marriage had begun with secrets.

But perhaps—

our family didn't have to end with them.

Then Evelyn's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What happened?”

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Diane has been found.”

My heart raced.

“Where?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“She turned herself in.”

“Why?”

“She says she wants to speak only to you.”

I frowned.

“Why me?”

Evelyn looked at Noah.

“Because she says she knows who ordered his kidnapping.”

Silence.

“Who?”

Evelyn's voice dropped.

“She says it wasn't Richard.”

I stared.

“Then who?”

May you like

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your mother.”
