Chapter 12 — Betrayal Inside Claire’s Circle

Chapter 12 — Betrayal Inside Claire’s Circle

The hardest betrayals were never committed by enemies.

Claire learned that lesson the day she stopped fearing the Harrows.

Enemies announced themselves.

They threatened.

They lied openly.

They showed you exactly where the danger was.

But betrayal from someone you trusted was different.

It arrived quietly.

It sat across from you at a coffee table.

It asked how your daughter was doing.

It told you everything would be okay.

And all the while...

It was waiting for the right moment to hurt you.

Three days after the courtroom revelation, Claire believed she was finally gaining control.

For the first time in months, the truth was moving faster than the lies.

The police had reopened the investigation into Alexander’s death.

The Harrow Foundation was under federal review.

Evelyn’s credibility was collapsing.

And Lily was finally beginning to understand that the adults around her had failed her.

But Claire knew the battle was not over.

The Harrows were wounded.

Not defeated.

A wounded person with power could be more dangerous than one who felt secure.

That morning, Claire sat in Victoria’s office reviewing documents.

“We need to protect the trust.”

Victoria said.

“How?”

Claire asked.

“By proving the Harrows attempted to manipulate access to Lily’s inheritance.”

Claire nodded.

“Which means we need every communication from the past eleven years.”

Victoria hesitated.

“There is a problem.”

Claire looked up.

“What?”

“Some records are missing.”

Again.

The same word.

Missing.

Claire felt a familiar anger rise.

“What records?”

“Your original correspondence with Alexander’s attorneys.”

Claire frowned.

“I never had those.”

Victoria looked at her carefully.

“Yes.”

That answer bothered Claire.

Because it meant someone knew something about her case that she did not.

“Who had access?”

Victoria looked uncomfortable.

“Your legal assistant.”

Claire froze.

“Daniel?”

Victoria nodded.

Daniel Foster had worked with Claire for seven years.

He was the person who organized her engineering contracts.

Managed her schedule.

Helped her during the worst months after Lily came into her life.

He had brought her food when she forgot to eat.

He had stayed late when court documents arrived unexpectedly.

He was one of the few people Claire trusted completely.

“No.”

Claire whispered.

Victoria did not answer.

Because she knew.

The possibility existed.

“I don’t believe it.”

Claire said.

“I understand.”

“No.”

Claire looked at her.

“You don’t.”

Her voice became quieter.

“Daniel was there when nobody else was.”

Victoria softened.

“Sometimes people who know us best know exactly where to hurt us.”

Claire hated that sentence.

Because part of her feared it was true.

That afternoon, she called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Claire? Everything okay?”

She listened to his voice.

Searching for something.

Anything.

“Did you access my legal files?”

Silence.

Only two seconds.

But Claire noticed.

“Why are you asking that?”

Her heart sank.

“Answer me.”

Another pause.

“No.”

Too fast.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Daniel.”

“I didn’t.”

“You hesitated.”

“Because I was shocked you would ask.”

She wanted to believe him.

She desperately wanted to.

But she had learned something from the Harrows.

People rarely confessed when the truth first appeared.

“Meet me.”

Claire said.

“Where?”

“Somewhere public.”

Daniel arrived twenty minutes late.

That alone was unusual.

He was never late.

He sat across from her.

“You think I betrayed you.”

Claire looked at him.

“I think someone accessed my files.”

Daniel looked away.

A small movement.

But enough.

“Daniel.”

He sighed.

“Claire…”

“Tell me the truth.”

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Just tired.

Then he said:

“I was contacted by Charles Harrow.”

Claire went completely still.

“What?”

“He offered me money.”

The world seemed quieter.

“How much?”

Daniel looked down.

“Two hundred thousand dollars.”

Claire felt something break inside.

Not because of the money.

Because she remembered all the times she trusted him.

“Did you take it?”

Daniel did not answer.

That was the answer.

Claire stood.

“You took it.”

“Claire, listen—”

“No.”

She stepped back.

“Don’t explain.”

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

“I never intended to hurt you.”

“That’s what everyone says.”

He looked at her.

“I was trying to protect my family.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Your family?”

Daniel’s face changed.

He realized.

The irony.

He had used the exact words Julian used.

“I thought the Harrows would win.”

Daniel whispered.

“I thought fighting them would destroy you.”

Claire stared.

“So you helped them.”

“I gave them information.”

The confession was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

“What information?”

Claire asked.

Daniel hesitated.

“Your financial records.”

Her expression hardened.

“My finances?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles wanted to know if you were hiding assets.”

Claire felt anger replace the hurt.

“They investigated me.”

Daniel nodded.

“For months.”

The same truth she had suspected.

The Harrows did not just attack people.

They studied them.

They collected weaknesses.

They prepared.

“Did you give them anything about Lily?”

Daniel’s silence was immediate.

Claire stepped closer.

“Did you?”

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Claire stared at him.

“Daniel.”

He looked away.

“Not directly.”

Her stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel swallowed.

“I told them you were looking into Alexander’s documents.”

Silence.

“And they knew?”

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Because that explained something.

The missing evidence.

The stolen files.

The attacks.

The Harrows had always been one step ahead.

Because someone inside her circle had been giving them information.

“Why tell me now?”

Claire asked.

Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.

“Because they’re going to kill me.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Daniel looked around nervously.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A payment record.”

Claire waited.

“Charles didn’t just pay me.”

Daniel whispered.

“He paid someone else.”

“Who?”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He opened a photograph.

A bank transfer.

A name.

Claire stared.

Because she recognized it.

The person who received money from Charles Harrow was not a stranger.

Not an employee.

Not a business partner.

It was someone Claire trusted even more than Daniel.

Victoria Lane.

Claire could not breathe.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

For the second time in her life...

Claire felt the ground disappear beneath her.

First, the Harrows betrayed her.

Now her own side.

That night, Claire returned home.

She did not tell Lily.

She did not cry.

She simply sat in the dark.

Because she had spent months fighting an empire.

But she had never considered the possibility that the person standing beside her...

Was holding the knife.

At midnight, Claire received an email.

No sender.

No subject.

Only one attachment.

A photograph.

It showed Victoria entering the Harrow estate.

The date:

Three days before the gala.

Under the image was one sentence.

You trusted the wrong person.

Claire stared at the screen.

And for the first time since this nightmare began...

May you like

She wondered if she had been fighting the wrong enemy all along.
