Chapter 8 — Julian’s Choice

Chapter 8 — Julian’s Choice
Julian Harrow had spent his entire life standing between two worlds.
The world he was born into.
And the world he secretly wished he belonged to.
For years, he convinced himself that he was different from his parents.
He was not like Charles.
Not like Evelyn.
He did not manipulate people.
He did not threaten employees.
He did not destroy anyone’s life.
That was the lie he told himself.
Because the truth was harder.
He had not been the person who caused the damage.
But he had watched it happen.
And sometimes...
Silence was another kind of participation.
The night Claire learned Amelia Carter was alive, Julian sat alone in his father’s old office.
The same office where Alexander had once discovered the family secrets.
The same room where generations of Harrows had made decisions about other people’s lives.
On the desk in front of him was a single folder.
LILY BENNETT — GUARDIANSHIP
He had seen it a thousand times.
But now it looked different.
Because Claire knew.
Everything.
The adoption.
The inheritance.
The payments.
The lies.
And soon, she would know the worst part.
His part.
“Still hiding in here?”
Julian looked up.
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
Even after everything, she looked composed.
Perfect.
She always looked perfect.
“What do you want?”
Julian asked.
His mother smiled slightly.
“That is not how you speak to the woman who raised you.”
Julian looked away.
“You raised me to obey you.”
For a moment, Evelyn said nothing.
Then she entered the room.
“You sound like Claire.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“That should tell you something.”
Evelyn walked toward the desk.
She touched the folder.
“Your wife has become a problem.”
Julian looked at her.
“She is protecting Lily.”
“No.”
Evelyn corrected.
“She is destroying Lily’s future.”
Julian laughed quietly.
“Still using that excuse?”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Excuse?”
“You don’t care about her.”
The room became cold.
Evelyn stared at her son.
“You have no idea what I have sacrificed for this family.”
Julian stood.
“No.”
His voice was shaking.
“I know exactly what you sacrificed.”
He pointed around the room.
“Everyone else.”
For the first time, Evelyn looked disappointed.
Not angry.
Disappointed.
That hurt Julian more.
Because he had spent his entire childhood trying to earn that look of approval.
“You are confused.”
“No.”
“You are emotional.”
“No.”
“You are being manipulated by your wife.”
Julian looked at her.
“Maybe I was manipulated by you.”
Silence.
The words were finally spoken.
And once they existed...
They could not be taken back.
Evelyn left without another word.
But Julian knew.
The war had changed.
The next morning, Claire met Amelia Carter.
Not at a restaurant.
Not at a public place.
Somewhere quiet.
Somewhere safe.
Amelia arrived wearing a simple coat.
She looked nothing like Claire expected.
Claire expected someone angry.
Someone broken.
Someone consumed by revenge.
Instead, she saw a woman who looked exhausted.
Like someone who had spent years running out of places to hide.
“You’re real.”
Claire whispered.
Amelia gave a sad smile.
“I wondered if Lily would remember me.”
Claire’s heart tightened.
“She remembers your name.”
Amelia covered her mouth.
For a moment, she almost cried.
Then she asked:
“Is she happy?”
The question surprised Claire.
Not:
Does she love me?
Not:
Will she come back to me?
Is she happy?
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
Amelia closed her eyes.
“Good.”
Claire studied her.
“Why didn’t you fight harder?”
The question came out harsher than she intended.
Amelia accepted it.
“I did.”
Silence.
“I fought for six years.”
Claire listened.
“I went to court.”
“I hired lawyers.”
“I begged social workers to investigate.”
Her voice shook.
“But the Harrows always knew what to say.”
She looked down.
“They said I was unstable.”
Claire felt anger rise.
“The same thing they’re saying about me.”
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.”
Then Amelia revealed something Claire never expected.
“Evelyn did not take Lily because of the inheritance.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“That came later.”
“Then why?”
Amelia looked at her.
“Because Lily was the only person Alexander trusted.”
Claire went still.
“Alexander?”
Amelia nodded.
“Before he died, he discovered what his parents were doing.”
“The financial crimes?”
“Yes.”
“He was preparing to expose them.”
Claire remembered Serena’s words.
Alexander’s documents.
The missing evidence.
“What does Lily have to do with that?”
Amelia took a deep breath.
“Alexander created a legal trust.”
Claire leaned forward.
“A trust?”
“For Lily.”
Amelia continued.
“He knew if anything happened to him, his parents would try to control everything.”
“So he protected her.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He placed the evidence with the trust.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“The evidence is connected to Lily?”
Amelia nodded.
“That is why Evelyn needed control of her.”
Everything finally connected.
The child.
The inheritance.
The lies.
Lily was never the prize.
She was the lock.
And somewhere inside her legal trust was the key.
That evening, Julian made a decision.
He returned to the Harrow estate.
Charles was in the study.
His father looked up.
“You finally came to your senses?”
Julian stared at him.
“No.”
Charles frowned.
“I came to end this.”
Charles laughed.
“You think you can threaten me?”
“No.”
Julian placed a folder on the desk.
“I think I can testify.”
The smile disappeared.
Charles opened the folder.
Inside were copies.
Financial records.
Transfers.
Names.
Proof.
“Where did you get these?”
Julian looked at him.
“From Alexander.”
Charles stood.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Julian’s voice became quiet.
“For the first time in my life…”
He looked around the room.
“I do.”
Charles stepped closer.
“Your mother will destroy you.”
Julian nodded.
“She already did.”
That night, Julian called Claire.
She answered cautiously.
“Why are you calling?”
A long silence.
Then:
“I need to tell you the truth.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Which truth?”
Julian swallowed.
“All of it.”
The next words changed everything.
“Claire…”
“I helped my mother hide Lily.”
Silence.
Claire could hear her own heartbeat.
“I knew about Amelia.”
Another pause.
“I knew about the trust.”
Claire’s voice was barely audible.
“Why?”
Julian closed his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.”
Claire said nothing.
“I thought if I obeyed them, I could protect Lily.”
A bitter laugh.
“But I was wrong.”
For eleven years, Julian had chosen his family.
Now he had to choose again.
And this time...
May you like
There would be consequences.
