Chapter 11 — The Mother Behind the Monster

Chapter 11 — The Mother Behind the Monster

The room seemed to shrink around us.

Diane stood at the top of the stairs with her gun pressed against Lily.

Arthur stood beside her.

Jason was several feet away, his hands raised.

Rachel had her weapon lowered because one wrong movement could cost my daughter her life.

Margaret was frozen beside the wall.

And Elena—the woman I had spent twenty-nine years believing did not exist—held the key Arthur wanted.

My biological mother.

The woman I had just learned had been watching me all my life.

The woman who had somehow survived a war I had never known existed.

She looked at me.

Her eyes were full of tears.

"Emily."

I could barely speak.

"Put the key down."

Her face broke.

"I can't."

Diane pressed the gun closer to Lily.

"She can."

Lily whimpered.

My entire body went cold.

"Don't touch her."

Diane smiled.

"You sound just like your mother."

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Diane's smile disappeared.

"You really don't know anything."

Arthur laughed softly.

"That's why she's still useful."

I looked at him.

"Useful for what?"

He nodded toward Elena.

"She spent twenty-nine years protecting the wrong secret."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Arthur smiled.

"You always were stubborn."

Diane interrupted.

"Give me the key."

Elena tightened her fingers around it.

"No."

Diane raised the gun.

Lily cried.

I stepped forward.

"Stop."

Everyone froze.

I looked at Diane.

"You want the key?"

"Yes."

"Then take me instead."

Arthur's expression changed.

Diane stared at me.

"You think you're brave?"

"No."

I looked at Lily.

"I'm her mother."

My voice shook.

"That's not bravery."

"It's what happens when someone puts a gun near your child."

Diane's jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with."

"I know exactly what I'm dealing with."

I looked at Arthur.

"Two people who spent years hiding behind other people."

Then at Diane.

"And one of them is finally afraid."

Her eyes narrowed.

I had touched something.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not anger.

Not control.

Fear.

"What are you afraid of?" I asked.

Arthur stepped forward.

"Enough."

But Diane stopped him.

"Let her speak."

I stared at her.

"What are you afraid I'll find?"

She said nothing.

I looked at the locked room.

Then at the archive.

"The truth."

Diane's face changed.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain it."

She laughed bitterly.

"You want an explanation?"

"Yes."

"You think I wanted this?"

"You kidnapped my daughter."

"I did what I had to do."

"You hurt my family."

"Because your family was already broken."

"You manipulated Jason."

"Jason was weak."

"You used Brooke."

"Brooke was desperate."

"You used my mother."

Diane's expression changed.

"Your mother..."

She laughed.

"Your mother was never a victim."

Elena stepped forward.

"Don't."

Diane looked at her.

"You should tell her."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

Diane smiled.

"Tell her what you did."

I turned toward Elena.

"What did you do?"

She closed her eyes.

"Emily..."

"What did you do?"

Her voice broke.

"I killed a man."

Silence.

Jason stared at her.

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

Diane smiled.

"Finally."

I couldn't move.

"Who?"

Elena looked at Thomas's image on the screen.

"Your father."

My heart stopped.

Thomas.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had protected me.

The man I had just seen alive.

"You killed him?"

"No."

She shook her head violently.

"I didn't."

"Then why did you say you did?"

"Because Arthur made me."

Arthur laughed.

"That's not how it happened."

Elena turned toward him.

"You threatened my daughter."

"I saved your daughter."

"You destroyed her family."

"You were never supposed to have one."

I looked at Arthur.

"What did you do?"

He smiled.

"Nothing you can understand."

"Try me."

He pointed toward Elena.

"She wasn't your father's wife."

I frowned.

"She was his partner."

Elena closed her eyes.

Arthur continued.

"Daniel Cross was your biological father."

I nodded.

"I know."

Arthur smiled.

"Do you know what he did?"

"No."

"He betrayed us."

Elena whispered:

"Arthur..."

"He stole the evidence."

"The Archive."

"Yes."

Arthur looked at me.

"Your father created the Archive to expose everyone involved in his operations."

"My father?"

"Daniel."

My stomach tightened.

"Then Thomas?"

"Thomas was his closest friend."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"And his greatest mistake."

The gun in Diane's hand moved slightly.

Lily cried again.

I looked at her.

"Please."

Diane stared at me.

For a moment, something flickered in her eyes.

Then it vanished.

"You want your daughter?"

"Yes."

"Then listen."

She nodded toward Arthur.

"Give him the key."

Elena shook her head.

"If I give it to him, he'll kill us."

Arthur smiled.

"Only if you resist."

I looked at Elena.

"Is that true?"

"No."

She whispered:

"He'll kill all of us."

Arthur's smile disappeared.

Diane looked at him.

"You said you'd let her go."

"I said I'd consider it."

Diane's face hardened.

"You lied to me."

Arthur looked at her.

"Of course."

For the first time, I saw Diane realize something.

She wasn't Arthur's partner.

She was his tool.

He had used her.

Just as he had used Jason.

Brooke.

My mother.

My father.

Everyone.

Diane's grip on the gun tightened.

"You promised me the money."

Arthur laughed.

"You thought this was about money?"

"Then what?"

"The Archive."

Diane stared.

"You said the trust was worth forty-seven million."

"It is."

"Then why?"

Arthur looked at me.

"Because the people named in that archive would pay ten times that amount to keep their names hidden."

I understood.

The money wasn't the goal.

Blackmail was.

Power was.

The Archive wasn't an inheritance.

It was a weapon.

And whoever controlled it could control judges, politicians, businesses, police departments, and criminals.

Arthur had spent decades trying to own it.

My father had spent decades trying to destroy him.

And I had been born in the middle of their war.

Thomas's voice came through the monitor.

"Emily."

Everyone looked at the screen.

His face was pale.

"Arthur."

Arthur turned.

"Still hiding behind machines?"

Thomas smiled weakly.

"Still hiding behind women?"

Arthur's jaw tightened.

Diane looked at Thomas.

"You lied to me."

Thomas didn't answer.

"You said he was dead."

"I said what I needed to say."

"You used me."

"Yes."

Diane's face changed.

"You made me believe I was going to inherit everything."

Thomas looked at her.

"You were never going to inherit anything."

Diane's eyes filled with rage.

Arthur laughed.

"Now you understand."

Diane looked at him.

"You knew?"

"Of course."

Her hands began shaking.

I saw something happen inside her.

The anger remained.

But something else appeared.

Desperation.

She looked down at Lily.

Then at Arthur.

Then at the gun.

And I knew she was about to make a choice.

"Diane."

She looked at me.

"You don't have to do this."

She laughed.

"I already did."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You can stop."

Arthur raised his weapon.

"Don't listen to her."

I looked at Diane.

"You know what happens if you give him the key."

She didn't answer.

"He kills you."

Silence.

"He kills my mother."

She looked away.

"He kills Lily."

Her eyes moved to my daughter.

"And then he'll come for Jason."

Jason looked at her.

"She's right."

Diane glared at him.

Jason continued:

"You know she is."

Arthur raised his weapon toward Jason.

"Shut up."

Jason stepped forward.

"You used me."

Arthur didn't answer.

"You used my name."

Nothing.

"You used my mother."

Still nothing.

"You used my wife."

Arthur smiled.

"Everyone is useful."

Jason looked at me.

"I should have protected you."

I nodded.

"You should have."

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

He looked at Diane.

"And I'm sorry I believed you."

Diane's eyes filled with tears.

Then she lowered the gun slightly.

Arthur saw it.

"Diane."

She didn't respond.

"Raise the gun."

She didn't.

"Now."

Her hand trembled.

Lily looked at her.

Then, in a tiny voice, she said:

"Mommy."

Diane froze.

My heart stopped.

Lily reached toward me.

"Mommy."

Diane looked at the child.

Something broke inside her.

Maybe it was memory.

Maybe regret.

Maybe the first glimpse of the person she had once been.

She slowly lowered the gun.

Arthur moved.

"Don't."

Diane looked at him.

"You lied."

He raised his weapon.

Diane turned.

She fired.

The shot struck Arthur's shoulder.

He fell backward.

Rachel immediately raised her weapon.

"Drop it!"

Diane did.

The gun hit the floor.

Rachel rushed toward Lily.

I ran up the stairs.

I grabbed my daughter.

She buried her face against my neck.

"I'm here."

I held her so tightly she squeaked.

"I'm here."

Behind me, Diane was on her knees.

Blood covered Arthur's shirt.

Jason helped Rachel secure him.

Margaret rushed toward Thomas's monitor.

And Elena stood alone.

Still holding the key.

I looked at her.

"You knew."

She nodded.

"You knew all of this."

"Yes."

"You knew my father was alive."

"Yes."

"You knew Arthur."

"Yes."

"You knew Diane."

"Yes."

"You knew who I was."

"Yes."

I held Lily tighter.

"Then why did you stay away from me?"

Elena's face crumpled.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of Arthur?"

"Of what he would do if he knew you were alive."

"But he knew."

"Not for years."

"How long?"

She hesitated.

"Three months."

I stared.

"Three months?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you come now?"

"Because Thomas told me the time had come."

I looked at the monitor.

"Thomas."

He nodded.

"He asked me to find you."

"But he said not to trust you."

Elena's eyes filled with pain.

"He was right."

I froze.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"There is something I haven't told you."

I waited.

"I wasn't the only one who had a secret."

"What secret?"

She looked toward Arthur.

Then Diane.

Then me.

"Daniel Cross is alive."

The room went silent.

Jason stared.

"No."

Elena nodded.

"He's alive."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"He disappeared after the Archive was created."

"Why?"

"Because he knew Arthur would hunt him."

I looked at the monitor.

Thomas looked away.

"Thomas?"

He didn't answer.

I turned toward Elena.

"Did Thomas know?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because Daniel made him promise."

I shook my head.

"Why?"

Elena whispered:

"Because Daniel was afraid you would look for him."

"And?"

She took a breath.

"He didn't want you to find him."

I felt confused.

"Why?"

Elena looked at Lily.

"Because he believed you would be safer if you hated him."

My heart broke.

My biological father was alive.

He had spent twenty-nine years avoiding me.

Not because he didn't love me.

But because he believed his love would get me killed.

Then something clicked.

"The photograph."

Elena looked at me.

"Which photograph?"

"The one of Thomas on his knees."

Her face went pale.

"That wasn't real."

"What?"

"It was staged."

"Why?"

"To make Arthur believe Daniel was dead."

I looked at the photograph again.

Blood.

Gun.

My mother.

Thomas.

All fake.

A performance designed to fool the people hunting them.

Then who had taken the photograph?

"Who photographed it?"

Elena whispered:

"Diane."

I turned toward her.

Diane was being handcuffed.

She looked at me.

"I was twenty-eight."

Her voice was almost broken.

"I thought I was helping your father."

"Which father?"

She looked at me.

"Both."

Then she began crying.

"I didn't become a monster that night."

She looked toward Arthur.

"He made me one."

Rachel pulled her to her feet.

"That's for the court to decide."

Diane looked at me.

"Emily."

I didn't answer.

She whispered:

"Your mother will tell you she saved you."

Elena stiffened.

"But she won't tell you what she did to save you."

I looked at Elena.

"What did you do?"

Elena's face went white.

Diane smiled through her tears.

"Ask her who she sacrificed."

An hour later, Arthur was taken away.

Diane was arrested.

Rachel arranged protection for Lily.

The house was secured.

The Archive was transferred into evidence.

For the first time in years, I believed the nightmare might actually be ending.

Then Elena disappeared.

We searched the house.

The basement.

The locked room.

The street.

Nothing.

Only a note remained on the desk.

My name.

Emily.

I opened it.

Her handwriting.

I am sorry.

I should have told you everything.

But if you knew the truth about the man I sacrificed to save you, you would never forgive me.

I stared at the words.

Below them was an address.

No explanation.

Just a name.

Daniel Cross.

And underneath:

Ask him why he let Thomas take his place.

I looked at Rachel.

"She wants me to find him."

Rachel nodded.

"But there's more."

She pointed to the bottom of the page.

A second sentence had been written.

And ask him what happened on the night you were born.

My blood went cold.

Because suddenly I understood.

The story hadn't begun with my marriage.

It hadn't begun with Diane.

It hadn't even begun with the trust.

It had begun twenty-nine years ago.

The night I was born.

The night my biological father disappeared.

The night Thomas became my father.

And the night someone had apparently decided that my entire life would have to be built on a lie.

I looked at Lily sleeping safely in Jason's arms.

Then at the door where Elena had disappeared.

I had spent my whole life searching for the truth.

Now I finally knew where to find it.

But I was beginning to fear that the truth wasn't going to set me free.

It was going to tell me why everyone had been so desperate to keep me alive.

And somewhere in the city, a man named Daniel Cross was waiting.

Not to meet his daughter.

May you like

But to tell her why he had abandoned her.

And why, twenty-nine years ago, he had chosen another man to be her father.
