Chapter 11 — Diane’s Final Trap

Chapter 11 — Diane’s Final Trap

The message arrived at 6:41 in the morning.

DIANE WANTS TO SEE YOU.

I stared at the screen.

Ryan stood behind me.

“Don't answer.”

Another message appeared.

SHE SAYS SHE CAN TELL YOU WHERE RICHARD TOOK THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENTS.

I looked at Ryan.

He shook his head.

“No.”

“She knows where they are.”

“She wants us to believe she knows.”

“What if she does?”

“She has been lying to us for years.”

I looked toward Noah.

He was asleep on the couch, exhausted after everything he'd endured.

Lily was curled beside him.

For the first time, my two children were sleeping in the same room.

I couldn't risk them.

But I also couldn't ignore the possibility that Diane knew where the final evidence was hidden.

Detective Morales entered.

“What happened?”

Ryan showed her the message.

She read it twice.

“Absolutely not.”

“She says she knows where Richard is.”

Morales looked at me.

“That's exactly why it's dangerous.”

“Why?”

“Because Diane is currently being held in custody.”

“So?”

“She shouldn't have access to a phone.”

Ryan's expression changed.

“Then someone is helping her.”

Morales nodded.

“Or someone wants us to think she is.”

Two hours later, a second message arrived.

This one contained a photograph.

Diane sat inside a detention interview room.

Her wrists were cuffed.

Across the table sat a woman.

Victoria.

I stared at the picture.

“She's with Diane.”

Morales shook her head.

“Impossible.”

She enlarged the image.

The timestamp was from thirty minutes earlier.

“Someone has manipulated the security system.”

Ryan looked at me.

“They want us to go there.”

“Yes,” Morales said.

“Why?”

“Because they need something from you.”

“What?”

Morales looked at the photograph.

“Probably the original DNA records.”

I felt cold.

The medical records were the only proof that Lily was mine.

Without them, the Bennett family could continue claiming I had kidnapped her.

Ryan reached into his coat.

He removed a small envelope.

“We still have copies.”

Morales nodded.

“Copies won't be enough.”

“What will?”

“The original.”

Silence.

I understood.

The document Diane wanted wasn't the birth record.

It was Catherine's trust document.

The one that determined who controlled the inheritance.

The one that named Lily and Noah.

The one that could destroy the entire Bennett empire.

And we didn't have it.

Richard did.

At noon, an attorney arrived.

He introduced himself as Daniel Reed.

“I represent the estate of Catherine Bennett.”

Ryan stared at him.

“Catherine died years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you here now?”

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

“Because your grandmother anticipated this situation.”

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My name was written on the envelope.

EMILY CARTER.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Emily,

If you're reading this, then the children have been separated.

Do not trust anyone who tells you the family needs to be protected.

Protect the children instead.

I swallowed.

There was more.

The trust contains a final provision.

If the children are ever separated by force, the trust becomes dormant.

It cannot be accessed by Diane.

It cannot be accessed by Robert.

It cannot be accessed by Richard.

I looked up.

“Richard is named.”

Daniel nodded.

“He was known to Catherine.”

Ryan's face hardened.

“My grandmother knew about him?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't she tell us?”

“Because she was afraid.”

“Of him?”

Daniel nodded.

“Of what he could do.”

I continued reading.

There is only one person who can reactivate the trust.

I looked at the next line.

Emily Carter.

My heart stopped.

Me.

Daniel continued:

“You must appear before the trust court and identify both children as biological heirs.”

Ryan frowned.

“But the court doesn't recognize Lily as Emily's daughter.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“That is why Diane is trying so hard to destroy the original medical records.”

That afternoon, we went to the detention center.

I hated every step.

Diane sat behind the glass.

She looked calm.

Almost amused.

When she saw me, she smiled.

“You came.”

I picked up the phone.

“Where is Richard?”

She laughed.

“Straight to business.”

“Where is he?”

“You really think he'll let you find him?”

“I think you're afraid of him.”

Her smile disappeared.

For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

“You don't know what you're dealing with.”

“Then tell me.”

Diane leaned closer.

“Richard doesn't want the money.”

“Then what does he want?”

She whispered:

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

I looked at her.

“Why did you steal Lily?”

“Because she was useful.”

“You separated twins.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about Noah.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my records.”

“Yes.”

I felt rage rising.

“Why?”

Diane smiled again.

“Because you were never supposed to be their mother.”

I froze.

“What?”

She leaned back.

“Ask your husband.”

I looked at Ryan.

He stared at her through the glass.

“What did you do?”

Diane laughed.

“Ask him who signed your marriage certificate.”

Ryan went still.

My heart dropped.

“What does my marriage have to do with this?”

Diane didn't answer.

Instead, she pressed a button on her side of the glass.

A screen behind her turned on.

A document appeared.

My marriage certificate.

But beneath my name was another page.

A contract.

A hidden agreement.

One I had never seen.

I read the first line.

MARRIAGE COVENANT — BENNETT FAMILY ESTATE.

I looked at Ryan.

“What is this?”

He shook his head.

“I've never seen it.”

Diane smiled.

“That's what I told myself too.”

The contract contained a clause that made my blood run cold.

Any child born during the marriage shall be considered a protected Bennett heir.

Another clause:

The biological mother shall have no independent claim to family trust assets.

And another:

In the event of marital dissolution, custody shall remain with the Bennett family guardian.

I looked at Ryan.

“You signed this?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Diane smiled.

“Your father.”

I looked at the signature.

ROBERT BENNETT.

Ryan shook his head.

“My father wasn't alive when we married.”

“Exactly.”

Diane leaned toward the glass.

“Which means someone was impersonating him.”

Richard.

The realization hit me.

Our marriage had been manipulated from the beginning.

Not because Diane wanted Ryan to marry me.

Because she wanted legal control over any children we had.

Lily.

Noah.

Both of them.

The marriage had been a trap.

I stood.

“You planned this before we even met.”

Diane smiled.

“Yes.”

Ryan looked devastated.

“What about me?”

“You were the perfect husband.”

Diane laughed.

“You trusted your family.”

She looked at me.

“And Emily trusted you.”

I slowly put the phone down.

Then I noticed something.

A tiny scratch on the bottom of the glass.

Three letters.

R.B.

I stared.

Diane followed my eyes.

Her face changed.

“What's wrong?”

I pointed.

“You're not the first person who sat there.”

She said nothing.

“Robert was here.”

Diane's eyes widened.

Ryan stepped closer.

“When?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“When?”

Diane stood abruptly.

“He's dead.”

I smiled.

“You just told us he was alive.”

She froze.

I walked away.

Because I finally understood.

Diane wasn't the mastermind.

She was terrified.

Outside the detention center, Morales was waiting.

“You saw the contract?”

“Yes.”

“Was it legitimate?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Robert's signature.”

She shook her head.

“That's not enough.”

I handed her a photograph.

The photograph from the warehouse.

Robert standing beside Lily.

Morales stared.

Then she looked at the signature.

“It's identical.”

“Exactly.”

Ryan understood.

“Richard forged Robert's signature.”

“Yes.”

“And Diane helped him.”

“Yes.”

“But why would she?”

I looked at the detention center.

“Because she thought she could control him.”

Morales nodded.

“She was wrong.”

That night, we returned to the safe house.

Noah was drawing.

Lily sat beside him.

“What are you drawing?”

Noah showed me.

It was a house.

Three people stood outside.

A woman.

A boy.

A girl.

And a fourth figure stood behind them.

I pointed.

“Who's that?”

Noah's face changed.

“That's the man Grandpa told me about.”

“Richard?”

He nodded.

“What does he want?”

Noah whispered:

“He wants the family to disappear.”

I crouched beside him.

“Why?”

“Because Grandpa wouldn't give him something.”

“What?”

Noah looked at Lily.

“Her.”

I frowned.

“Lily?”

He nodded.

“He said Lily isn't just an heir.”

“What is she?”

Noah hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She is the key.”

At midnight, the lights went out.

Again.

Ryan immediately grabbed his weapon.

Morales drew hers.

I pulled both children behind me.

A voice came through the darkness.

“Emily.”

I recognized it.

Diane.

But Diane was in custody.

The voice continued.

“You should have listened.”

Ryan shouted:

“Show yourself!”

A projector turned on.

Diane's face appeared on the wall.

It was a prerecorded video.

She sat in the same detention room.

But this recording had been made earlier.

“By the time you see this,” she said, “you will have discovered the marriage contract.”

She smiled.

“And you will have realized that Robert's signature was forged.”

I stared.

“But there's something you haven't figured out.”

The video changed.

A photograph appeared.

Ryan as a child.

Standing beside a man.

The man was Richard.

My stomach turned.

Diane continued.

“Richard wasn't Robert's brother.”

Ryan stared.

“What?”

Diane smiled.

“He was Robert's son.”

Silence.

I looked at Ryan.

His face had gone completely white.

“That's impossible.”

Diane's voice continued.

“Robert had another child before Ryan was born.”

The photograph changed.

A young woman appeared beside Richard.

Diane said:

“His mother was Catherine's former assistant.”

Then another photograph.

A baby.

“Richard was abandoned.”

“Robert hid him.”

“And Catherine discovered him.”

The final photograph showed Catherine holding the baby.

Diane whispered:

“She loved him.”

The screen went black.

Ryan stared at the wall.

“My grandmother knew.”

“Yes.”

“She loved Richard.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he become this?”

I shook my head.

“I don't know.”

A phone rang.

Noah's.

Everyone froze.

He picked it up.

“Hello?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“It's Grandpa.”

Ryan grabbed the phone.

“Dad?”

Robert's voice came through.

“Ryan.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't have much time.”

“What happened?”

“I was wrong about Richard.”

“How?”

“I thought he wanted the trust.”

Ryan's voice cracked.

“What does he want?”

Robert paused.

Then said:

“He wants Lily.”

I looked at my daughter.

“Why?”

Robert whispered:

“Because Catherine left something inside her.”

I froze.

“What?”

“A key.”

“To what?”

“The original trust.”

Silence.

Robert continued:

“And Richard believes that if he controls Lily, he controls the trust.”

Ryan asked:

“Where are you?”

“I'm coming to you.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

A gunshot exploded through the phone.

Robert gasped.

Then silence.

Ryan screamed:

“Dad!”

The line went dead.

The projector suddenly turned on again.

A final message appeared.

ONE CHILD IS SAFE.

Then:

ONE CHILD IS MISSING.

I grabbed Lily.

Ryan looked around wildly.

“Noah!”

The room was empty.

The chair where Noah had been sitting was overturned.

His drawing lay on the floor.

Lily began screaming.

I ran toward the hallway.

The front door was still locked.

The windows were closed.

There was no sign of forced entry.

Then I saw something on Noah's drawing.

Someone had written across the bottom in black ink.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING ME THE KEY.

I dropped to my knees.

Ryan stared at me.

“Emily…”

I couldn't speak.

Because I finally understood Diane's final trap.

She hadn't wanted us to find the trust.

She hadn't wanted Lily.

She had wanted us to reveal where both children were.

And we had walked directly into it.

The safe house had never been safe.

Someone had been watching us from the beginning.

And now Noah was gone again.

But this time, there was no question about who had taken him.

May you like

Richard wanted the key.

And he had just taken the one child who knew exactly where it was.
