Chapter 14 — Ryan Finally Chooses His Family

Chapter 14 — Ryan Finally Chooses His Family

Ryan woke before sunrise.

For several minutes, he simply stared at the ceiling.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

For the first time in months, there were no arguments coming from Diane's room.

No slammed doors.

No whispered phone calls.

No footsteps outside Emily's bedroom.

No one telling him what he was supposed to believe.

Yet Ryan couldn't sleep.

Because the photograph Detective Morales had shown him the previous night kept returning to his mind.

Four people.

Robert.

Richard.

Samuel.

And Emily's mother.

Beneath the photograph was one sentence:

Diane was never the architect.

And another name had been attached to the file.

Emily's mother.

Ryan had spent his entire life believing the Bennett family was complicated.

Now he understood something worse.

It wasn't complicated.

It had been deliberately constructed.

And his family had been lying to him since before he was born.

He got out of bed.

As he walked downstairs, he heard voices in the kitchen.

Emily.

And Claire.

“Are you sure?” Claire asked.

Emily nodded.

“I can't keep hiding it.”

Ryan stopped.

“What are you hiding?”

Both women turned.

Emily's face went pale.

Claire looked down.

Ryan stepped into the kitchen.

“What happened?”

Emily slowly placed a photograph on the table.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

A younger version of Emily's mother stood beside Robert Bennett.

Between them was Catherine.

And in Catherine's arms was a newborn baby.

Ryan stared.

“Who is that?”

Emily swallowed.

“I don't know.”

“Then why are you looking at it like that?”

“Because I think I've seen the baby before.”

Ryan looked closer.

A tiny bracelet wrapped around the infant's wrist.

The same bracelet from the photograph of Lily.

His heart stopped.

“That's Lily.”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

“But this photograph was taken before you met me.”

“I know.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Then how?”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“I think my mother knew your father before we ever met.”

Ryan sat down.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Emily whispered:

“Of the truth.”

Ryan wanted to be angry.

He wanted to walk away.

He wanted to tell Emily that after everything they had endured, she should have trusted him enough to tell him immediately.

But then he looked at her.

Really looked at her.

She wasn't hiding something because she wanted to deceive him.

She was terrified.

And suddenly Ryan remembered how many times he had done exactly the same thing.

How often he had stayed silent when Diane told him to.

How often he'd accepted his mother's version of events because questioning her was easier than facing the truth.

He reached across the table.

“Tell me.”

Emily wiped her eyes.

“I remembered something yesterday.”

“What?”

“The night before Lily and Noah were born.”

Ryan waited.

“My mother came to the hospital.”

“She told me she had something to show me.”

“What?”

“A contract.”

Ryan's stomach tightened.

“The trust?”

Emily nodded.

“She told me Catherine wanted me to sign it.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you understand what it meant?”

“No.”

“What did your mother say?”

Emily looked toward the window.

“She said it would protect my children.”

Ryan lowered his voice.

“From whom?”

Emily looked at him.

“From your family.”

Ryan stood.

“I need to know everything.”

Emily nodded.

“My mother said Robert had been planning to take control of Catherine's trust.”

“That's what we've heard.”

“But she also said there was another problem.”

“Richard?”

“No.”

Emily hesitated.

“Samuel.”

Ryan froze.

“The man we thought was my father?”

“Yes.”

“What about him?”

“He was the one who helped Catherine create the trust.”

Ryan stared.

“But Robert was her son.”

“Exactly.”

“And Samuel?”

Emily looked at him.

“Samuel wasn't your biological father.”

Ryan felt as though the floor had shifted beneath him.

“What?”

“He was Catherine's legal adviser.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

“He helped design the trust.”

“No.”

“He was involved in the hospital records.”

“No.”

Ryan stepped backward.

“You're saying the man we've been calling my father wasn't my father?”

Emily nodded.

“I think so.”

Ryan laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“My entire life…”

He stopped.

Then whispered:

“Who was my father?”

Emily looked at the photograph.

“We don't know.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Then why does Richard say Robert was his father?”

“Because Robert was.”

“And Sophie?”

“His daughter.”

“Then where do I fit?”

Emily reached for his hand.

“You're the person they were trying to protect.”

Ryan pulled his hand away.

“Protect me?”

“Yes.”

“Everyone lied to me.”

“I know.”

“My mother lied.”

“Yes.”

“My father lied.”

“Yes.”

“Catherine lied.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know.”

Ryan looked away.

That was the answer he needed.

Not because it made everything better.

But because it was honest.

At noon, Detective Morales arrived.

She brought a folder.

“We found the person who created the original trust.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Catherine?”

Morales shook her head.

“No.”

Emily stiffened.

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“I knew it.”

Ryan looked confused.

“Why would Emily's mother create a trust for Bennett children?”

Morales placed several documents on the table.

“Because she wasn't simply Emily's mother.”

Ryan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“She worked for Catherine.”

“How long?”

“Twenty-two years.”

Emily stared at the documents.

“She never told me.”

“She couldn't.”

“Why?”

Morales opened the first page.

“Because she was placed under a confidentiality agreement.”

Ryan read it.

Then his expression changed.

“This isn't confidentiality.”

“No.”

“It is a witness protection agreement.”

Morales nodded.

Emily looked up.

“From whom?”

Morales turned another page.

“Robert Bennett.”

Ryan's breathing slowed.

“My father threatened her?”

“According to the documents, yes.”

“What did he threaten?”

“Her daughter.”

Emily went still.

“Me.”

Morales nodded.

“Your mother believed Robert intended to use you as leverage.”

Ryan stared at the papers.

“So she created the trust to protect Emily.”

“And the children,” Morales said.

“But why did she disappear?”

Morales hesitated.

“She didn't disappear.”

Emily's face went white.

“What?”

“She was killed.”

Silence.

Emily stopped breathing.

“What?”

“Six years ago.”

“I was told she died in an accident.”

“She did.”

Morales looked down.

“But it wasn't an accident.”

Ryan stared.

“Who killed her?”

Morales slowly answered:

“We don't know yet.”

Emily sank into a chair.

For years, she had believed her mother had died in a tragic accident.

Now she knew the accident had been part of the same conspiracy.

And suddenly everything connected.

The trust.

The children.

The hospital records.

Diane.

Robert.

Richard.

Samuel.

Her mother.

All of them.

That afternoon, Ryan made a decision.

He called his family's attorneys.

“I am withdrawing from every Bennett family trust.”

Silence answered him.

The attorney finally said:

“Mr. Bennett, you don't understand what that means.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You could lose millions.”

“I don't care.”

“You could lose the estate.”

“I don't care.”

“Your mother will be furious.”

Ryan laughed.

“She already is.”

“You have responsibilities.”

Ryan looked toward the living room.

Emily was sitting on the floor with Lily.

Noah was building a tower of wooden blocks.

Lily knocked it over.

Noah laughed.

Ryan smiled.

“My responsibility is them.”

The attorney lowered his voice.

“If you do this, the family will turn against you.”

Ryan looked at Emily.

“They already did.”

He hung up.

Emily watched him.

“You didn't have to do that.”

“Yes.”

“You could lose everything.”

Ryan walked toward her.

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“I already lost everything once.”

Emily looked up.

“When?”

“When I chose my mother's approval over my wife.”

He knelt beside her.

“I watched her hurt you.”

“I watched her manipulate you.”

“I watched her lie about our children.”

“And every time, I told myself there had to be a reason.”

His voice broke.

“There wasn't.”

Emily reached for him.

Ryan took her hand.

“I choose you.”

Then he looked at Lily.

“I choose her.”

Then Noah.

“And him.”

He took a breath.

“I don't care what happens to the money.”

Emily cried.

Ryan gently wiped her cheek.

“I spent my entire life being a Bennett.”

He smiled sadly.

“Today, I became their father.”

That evening, another message arrived.

This time, it wasn't anonymous.

It came from Diane.

YOU THINK YOU WON.

Ryan stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ROBERT LEFT BEHIND.

Then:

ASK EMILY ABOUT THE NIGHT HER MOTHER DIED.

Emily read the messages.

She froze.

“What?”

Ryan showed her.

She shook her head.

“I don't know anything.”

Diane sent another message.

SHE DOES.

Then:

SHE JUST DOESN'T REMEMBER.

Emily's hands began trembling.

A final message appeared.

COME TO THE OLD MERCER CHURCH AT MIDNIGHT.

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“If Diane knows something about my mother—”

“She wants us there.”

“I know.”

“It's a trap.”

“I know.”

Ryan looked toward Morales.

“We'll go with police.”

Emily nodded.

But there was something neither of them noticed.

Noah was standing in the hallway.

Listening.

At 11:47 p.m., the police surrounded the old church.

Emily and Ryan entered through the front door.

The building was abandoned.

Dust covered the pews.

Moonlight came through broken stained glass.

At the altar was a small wooden box.

Emily approached.

Inside was a photograph.

Her mother.

Pregnant.

Standing beside Robert.

And another man.

Ryan looked at the man.

“That's Samuel.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed to the photograph.

“That isn't Samuel.”

Ryan looked closer.

He froze.

The man was someone else.

Someone who looked remarkably like Samuel.

But older.

The photograph had been taken twenty years earlier.

On the back was a handwritten note:

THIS IS THE MAN WHO FATHERED RYAN.

Ryan's hands trembled.

“Who is he?”

A voice answered from the darkness.

“Me.”

They turned.

A man stepped forward.

He was old.

Gray-haired.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Ryan stared.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled sadly.

“My name is Daniel Carter.”

Emily froze.

“Carter?”

He nodded.

“Your mother's brother.”

Ryan stared at him.

“You're my uncle?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not only yours.”

He looked at Emily.

“Yours too.”

Emily's face went white.

“My mother had a brother?”

“Yes.”

“Why have I never heard of you?”

“Because Robert made sure you wouldn't.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Are you my father?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who is?”

Daniel looked toward the church doors.

“You're asking the wrong question.”

Ryan frowned.

“What should I ask?”

Daniel answered:

“Why did Robert need everyone to believe he was your father?”

Silence.

Then Daniel placed another document on the altar.

A birth certificate.

Ryan's name was written across it.

The father's name had been blacked out.

But beneath the black ink was another name.

Samuel Carter.

Ryan stared.

“Carter?”

Daniel nodded.

“My brother.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“Then Ryan and I…”

“Are not related,” Daniel said.

Ryan looked at Emily.

Their eyes met.

For the first time, neither of them looked afraid of what the truth might mean.

They simply wanted it.

All of it.

Daniel continued:

“Samuel was the biological father of both Ryan and the twins.”

Emily's heart stopped.

“What?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Lily and Noah were not Robert's grandchildren.”

“They were never Bennett heirs by blood.”

Ryan stared.

“Then why did the trust belong to them?”

“Because Catherine wanted them protected from the Bennett family.”

Emily whispered:

“Why?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Because Robert had discovered the children existed.”

“And he wanted them.”

“For what?”

Daniel looked toward Lily's photograph.

“Not for the money.”

“For the bloodline.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“What bloodline?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The Bennett family has been hiding one final secret.”

He opened the last document.

At the top was a name.

THE SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.

Below it were three names.

Ryan Carter.

Lily Carter.

Noah Carter.

And underneath them:

THE THREE LIVING KEYS.

Emily stared.

“Three?”

Daniel nodded.

“There's another child.”

Ryan's face went pale.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Your sister.”

Ryan shook his head.

“I don't have a sister.”

Daniel's eyes filled with sadness.

“You did.”

“Where is she?”

“She was taken the night you were born.”

Emily felt cold.

“By whom?”

Daniel looked toward the darkness behind them.

“Diane.”

A gunshot shattered the church window.

Everyone dropped.

Morales shouted:

“DOWN!”

Daniel grabbed the documents.

Ryan pulled Emily behind a stone pillar.

Another shot.

Then silence.

When Morales and the officers rushed outside, the shooter was gone.

But Daniel was still there.

He handed Ryan the documents.

“Now you know why I came back.”

Ryan stared at him.

“Where is my sister?”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“She's alive.”

Emily's heart stopped.

“Where?”

Daniel whispered:

“She's been living under another name.”

“What name?”

He looked toward the church doors.

Then said:

“Sophie.”

Ryan froze.

The girl they had believed was Robert's daughter.

The girl who had helped them.

The girl who knew where Noah had been taken.

Sophie.

Ryan shook his head.

“That can't be.”

Daniel nodded.

“It is.”

Emily stared.

“Then Robert isn't Sophie's father.”

“No.”

“Who is?”

Daniel looked at Ryan.

“Samuel.”

Ryan's world went silent.

Sophie was his sister.

The same girl who had stood beside them.

The same girl who had risked everything to expose the truth.

The same girl Diane had tried to erase.

Ryan closed his eyes.

For years, he had believed he was alone.

Now he had a sister.

And she had been hiding in the middle of the same conspiracy that had destroyed their family.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Sophie.

I KNOW WHO KILLED MY FATHER.

Ryan typed:

WHO?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

A final message arrived.

DIANE DIDN'T KILL HIM.

Another.

ROBERT DID.

Ryan looked at Emily.

The final message appeared.

AND ROBERT IS COMING FOR ME NEXT.

Ryan stood.

He had spent his entire life choosing the wrong people.

His mother.

His family name.

Their money.

Their lies.

Not anymore.

He took Emily's hand.

Then called Morales.

“We need protection for Sophie.”

Morales nodded.

Ryan looked toward the church doors.

“And we're bringing her home.”

Emily squeezed his hand.

“Together?”

Ryan smiled.

“Together.”

For the first time, he didn't hesitate.

He didn't ask what Diane would think.

He didn't ask what the Bennett family would lose.

He didn't ask whether choosing Emily and the children would destroy his inheritance.

He already knew the answer.

He had finally chosen his family.

And somewhere in the darkness, another member of that family was waiting to come home.

But before they could reach her, one final truth remained.

May you like

The person who had ordered Sophie's disappearance twelve years ago was still alive.

And that person had just learned that Ryan was no longer willing to obey.
