Chapter 11 — The Night James Nearly Lost Control

Chapter 11 — The Night James Nearly Lost Control
The house went dark.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Lily screamed.
“Dad!”
James was already moving.
He pushed me behind him and reached for the flashlight beside the bed.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Evelyn—”
“I am not leaving my daughter.”
He looked at me.
Then he nodded.
The voice outside came again.
“Lily.”
She buried her face against my chest.
“He knows I'm here.”
I held her tighter.
“How?”
James looked toward the window.
“Because someone told him.”
My stomach dropped.
“Who?”
He didn't answer.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Then another.
Someone was inside.
James immediately grabbed his weapon.
“Stay with Lily.”
“James—”
“I'll be back.”
He disappeared into the hallway.
I heard his footsteps moving downstairs.
Then silence.
Too much silence.
Lily was shaking.
I whispered:
“It's okay.”
“No, it isn't.”
“I won't let him take you.”
“You don't know him.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“But I do.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He isn't like the people you think he is.”
“What do you mean?”
“He doesn't get angry.”
I frowned.
“He smiles.”
That frightened me more than anything.
A door slammed downstairs.
Then I heard James shout.
Not in anger.
In warning.
“Put it down.”
A man's voice answered.
“You're still protecting her.”
I recognized the voice immediately.
Alexander.
I pulled Lily closer.
“Stay here.”
She grabbed my wrist.
“Don't go.”
“I have to help him.”
“No.”
“Lily.”
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“He wants you to come downstairs.”
“Why?”
“He wants James angry.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Because angry people make mistakes.”
She was right.
That was exactly what Alexander wanted.
James had always been controlled.
Disciplined.
Measured.
But Alexander had found the one thing capable of breaking through all of that.
Us.
I moved toward the hallway.
Lily followed.
We reached the staircase.
James stood at the bottom.
A man was facing him.
Tall.
Gray coat.
Calm expression.
He looked almost ordinary.
That was the terrifying part.
Alexander looked up.
His eyes met mine.
Then he smiled.
“Evelyn.”
I stopped.
“Stay away from my daughter.”
He laughed softly.
“Your daughter?”
“She is mine.”
“She is also mine.”
“No.”
His expression changed.
“You really don't know.”
“Know what?”
He looked at James.
“Tell her.”
James didn't answer.
Alexander smiled.
“Of course.”
He looked back at me.
“Your husband knows exactly who Lily's father is.”
I looked at James.
“Is he lying?”
James's jaw tightened.
“No.”
My heart dropped.
Alexander continued.
“He knew Richard was not her biological father.”
James spoke quietly.
“I knew there was evidence.”
“You knew enough.”
“I didn't know everything.”
Alexander laughed.
“You never do.”
James stepped forward.
“Leave.”
Alexander didn't move.
“You should have stayed out of this.”
“You threatened my family.”
“No.”
Alexander's smile disappeared.
“I warned you.”
Something changed in James's face.
It was subtle.
His shoulders stiffened.
His jaw clenched.
His hands curled into fists.
I had never seen him look like that.
Alexander noticed too.
“You see?”
He smiled.
“This is why I came.”
James moved.
Fast.
He crossed the distance between them and slammed Alexander against the wall.
I screamed.
“James!”
Alexander didn't fight back.
He laughed.
“That's it.”
James's fist tightened.
“Tell me where you've been hiding.”
Alexander smiled.
“Make me.”
James raised his fist.
I ran downstairs.
“James!”
He stopped.
His fist remained inches from Alexander's face.
I had never seen him like that.
His breathing was heavy.
His eyes were filled with rage.
Alexander whispered:
“Do it.”
James's fist trembled.
“James.”
He slowly lowered his hand.
Alexander laughed.
“You're weaker than I thought.”
James grabbed his collar.
“You don't know me.”
“I know exactly who you are.”
Alexander leaned closer.
“You've spent fourteen years pretending to be her protector.”
James froze.
“You weren't protecting her.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
I saw something break in James's expression.
“What does that mean?”
Alexander looked at me.
“Ask him.”
I turned toward my husband.
“James?”
He looked away.
Alexander smiled.
“Tell her about the night Richard died.”
I felt sick.
Again.
The same secret.
The same night.
The same silence.
“James.”
He closed his eyes.
“I was there.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“You don't.”
“What happened?”
“I went to meet Richard.”
“I know.”
“He gave me the file.”
“The file about Lily.”
“Yes.”
“What happened after?”
James swallowed.
“Alexander arrived.”
My heart stopped.
“You met him?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Richard told me not to.”
“What happened?”
James looked at Alexander.
“Richard was already injured.”
“How?”
Alexander smiled.
“Your husband arrived too late.”
James's expression hardened.
“I tried to save him.”
“You failed.”
James lunged again.
This time I grabbed his arm.
“James!”
He stopped.
Alexander laughed.
“You see?”
He looked at me.
“This is the man you've trusted.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Alexander frowned.
“I know my husband.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“Then ask him why Richard died.”
I looked at James.
“Why?”
James whispered:
“Because I couldn't save him.”
Alexander shook his head.
“Because he chose you.”
I froze.
“What?”
Alexander stepped closer.
“Richard had a choice.”
James stared at him.
“He could have given me the documents.”
“But he didn't.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed your wife deserved the truth.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“So Richard died protecting me.”
“Yes.”
Alexander smiled.
“And James was the last person he trusted.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Alexander looked toward the door.
James immediately realized what was happening.
“You called the police.”
Alexander smiled.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Alexander looked at me.
“Your sister.”
I turned.
Lauren stood at the entrance.
Her face was pale.
“Lauren?”
She looked at Alexander.
“I told you to leave them alone.”
Alexander laughed.
“You still think you can control this.”
“I know what you did.”
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“I know what you did to Richard.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Careful.”
“You killed him.”
“I didn't.”
“You did.”
“I wasn't there.”
“You don't need to be.”
Lauren pulled a small recorder from her pocket.
“I have the proof.”
Alexander's smile disappeared.
James moved toward her.
“Where did you get that?”
“From Mom.”
I stared at her.
“My mother had this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she recorded Alexander.”
Alexander's face changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Lauren pressed play.
My mother's voice filled the room.
“I can't help you anymore.”
Alexander answered:
“You don't have a choice.”
“I already gave you what you wanted.”
“Not everything.”
“The child is gone.”
“You know where she is.”
“I don't.”
“You're lying.”
“I swear.”
“You signed the papers.”
“I was forced.”
“You agreed.”
“I was afraid.”
A pause.
Then Alexander said:
“Then be afraid of what happens to Evelyn.”
My blood ran cold.
My mother answered:
“You promised you wouldn't hurt her.”
“I promised nothing.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Lauren looked at Alexander.
“You threatened Mom.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened Evelyn.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened Lily.”
Alexander looked at the stairs.
“She is my daughter.”
Lauren shook her head.
“She is not your possession.”
His expression became cold.
“You don't understand what she is.”
I stepped forward.
“She is a child.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“She is evidence.”
“Of what?”
“Everything Richard discovered.”
James moved closer.
“Then tell us.”
Alexander smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
He reached inside his coat.
James immediately raised his weapon.
“Don't.”
Alexander slowly removed a small envelope.
He tossed it onto the floor.
It landed between us.
“This is why everyone lied.”
I picked it up.
Inside was a DNA report.
My name.
Richard Bell's name.
And Lily's.
The result was undeniable.
Biological parentage confirmed.
Richard was not Lily's father.
I stared at the page.
“What?”
James took it.
His face went pale.
Alexander smiled.
“Now you know.”
I looked at him.
“Then who is her father?”
Alexander pointed at James.
My heart stopped.
James didn't move.
I whispered:
“James?”
He looked at me.
“I didn't know.”
Alexander laughed.
“Of course you didn't.”
I looked at the DNA report again.
There was another name.
James Walker.
My husband.
Lily's biological father.
The room disappeared around me.
I couldn't breathe.
“You…”
James's eyes filled with tears.
“I swear to you, Evelyn, I didn't know.”
“How?”
“I don't know.”
Alexander smiled.
“Because the records were changed.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because your father needed Lily to disappear.”
“But why would James be involved?”
Alexander looked at him.
“Because your father knew the truth.”
James shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You're lying.”
“Am I?”
Alexander pulled out another document.
“This is the original medical record.”
James looked at it.
His face drained of color.
The date.
The hospital.
The time.
Everything matched.
I remembered something.
The first time James and I had met.
The first time he'd seen me.
The way he'd looked at me.
The strange sense of familiarity.
I had always thought it was attraction.
Now I wondered.
Had he known something?
James looked at me.
“I didn't know.”
I couldn't speak.
“Evelyn.”
I stepped backward.
He followed.
“No.”
“Please.”
“Don't.”
“I swear.”
“How could you not know?”
“Because I never knew you were pregnant.”
“But you knew Richard.”
“Yes.”
“And he knew.”
“I thought he was protecting you.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my daughter existed.”
“I knew a child existed.”
My voice broke.
“You knew enough.”
“I didn't know she was mine.”
Alexander laughed.
“You're wasting your time.”
James turned toward him.
“Shut up.”
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“You were the father.”
James froze.
“Your father knew.”
I stared.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't he tell James?”
“Because James was about to leave.”
“Leave?”
“For deployment.”
Alexander looked at me.
“Your father arranged for the medical records to be altered.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted the child gone.”
“And James?”
“He wanted James gone too.”
I felt sick.
“Why?”
“Because your father believed James would eventually take you away.”
Everything suddenly became clear.
My father hadn't simply hated my relationship.
He had feared it.
James represented freedom.
Lily represented the permanent connection between us.
So he destroyed both.
James looked at me.
“I loved you before I knew any of this.”
I shook my head.
“I know.”
“And I would have protected you.”
“I know.”
“I would have protected Lily.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you looking at me like that?”
Because I didn't know what to believe anymore.
I walked toward him.
Then stopped.
“Did you ever love me because of what my family had?”
“No.”
“Did you ever stay because of Lily?”
“No.”
“Did you know she was yours?”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“Then I believe you.”
His eyes filled with tears.
But before he could reach me, Alexander raised his weapon.
Everything happened at once.
James turned.
Lauren screamed.
A gunshot echoed through the house.
I felt someone shove me backward.
James.
He fell.
“JAMES!”
He hit the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
I screamed.
Alexander ran.
The police stormed through the front door.
Lauren dropped beside James.
“Call an ambulance!”
I knelt beside him.
“James.”
His eyes opened.
He tried to speak.
“Lily…”
“She’s safe.”
He smiled weakly.
“Good.”
I pressed my hands against his wound.
“Stay with me.”
He whispered:
“I love you.”
“Don't say goodbye.”
“I wasn't.”
His eyes closed.
I screamed his name.
The ambulance arrived minutes later.
Those minutes felt like hours.
Lily stood beside me, crying.
“Is he going to die?”
“No.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
I didn't know if it was true.
But I needed her to believe it.
Because for fourteen years, people had told us what was supposed to happen.
They had told me my daughter was dead.
They had told Lily her mother was gone.
They had told James the truth didn't matter.
They had told us all that the Whitmore family controlled our lives.
They were wrong.
As the ambulance doors closed, I looked toward the police car.
Alexander was gone.
He had escaped through the rear entrance.
But he had left one thing behind.
The envelope.
The DNA report.
And beneath it was another document.
A handwritten note.
I opened it.
There were only seven words.
The truth is buried beneath the Whitmore house.
I stared at the sentence.
Then I looked at my mother.
She had been silent since the shooting.
“Mom.”
She wouldn't meet my eyes.
“What's beneath the house?”
She began crying.
“Your father.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
She finally looked at me.
“He hid everything there.”
“What?”
“The original records.”
“About Lily?”
“Yes.”
“The trust?”
“Yes.”
“Richard?”
She nodded.
“And something else.”
“What?”
My mother's voice trembled.
“The evidence that proves who ordered Richard's murder.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
She closed her eyes.
“Your father.”
Silence.
I looked toward the ambulance carrying James away.
Then toward Lily.
Then back at my mother.
For fourteen years, I had thought my father's death had ended his secrets.
I was wrong.
He had buried them beneath the house.
And now we were going to dig them up.
No matter what we found.
No matter who it destroyed.
Because my husband was fighting for his life.
My daughter had finally found her mother.
And the family that had spent fourteen years controlling us had made one final mistake.
They had pushed us too far.
This time, I wasn't going to run.
May you like
I was going back to the Whitmore house.
And I was going to uncover everything my father had buried.
